Sam LaPorta News
Sam LaPorta emerging · Sep 24, 2023
Lions rookie tight end Sam LaPorta had eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown in the Lions win against Atlanta.
LaPorta's 11 targets trailed only Amon-Ra St. Brown's 12 to lead Detroit on the day. The Lions are seemingly more than happy force-feeding the football to these two and LaPorta is quickly emerging as the class of the tight end position in this year's rookie class. His ranking of TE10 likely won't move up after today but it certainly won't be moving down, either.
Sam LaPorta solid in debut · Sep 8, 2023
Lions rookie tight end Sam LaPorta had five catches for 39 yards in his NFL debut.
LaPorta was a key part of the game plan as he caught all five of his targets. The usage rate should surprise nobody after his solid off-season, While the game line isn't anything that will blow you away, it's clear LaPorta is the TE of choice in Detroit and big games could be coming. He's a solid target for dynasty teams as he could eventually reach TE1 status.
Sam LaPorta may not start · Jul 22, 2023
While Sam LaPorta has had a great first offseason, he may not start over Brock Wright to being the season
The rookie has been lauded by players and coaches all offseason, but Brock Wright, now in his third season, did look the part in limited time as the Lions starter following the trade of T.J. Hockenson. That said, LaPorta was drafted to be the starter and all expectation is for that to occur sooner rather than later, but don't expect an immediate material impact as he is eased in and gets his NFL feet underneath him. Playing in a top tight end scheme, with a coach who knows how to get production from his tight ends and a quarterback adept and throwing to them, it's only a matter of time before LaPorta is lining up with the starters. He's listed as DLF's TE13 showing that expectations remain high.
Sam LaPorta's role is clear · Jul 3, 2023
It's looks "pretty clear" that rookie tight end Sam LaPorta will be the starter in 2023.
There's been nothing to suggest otherwise and the team doesn't have much in the way of proven talent behind him. LaPorta continues to receive almost daily mention as the rookie attempts to fill the void of departed (MIN) star tight end T.J. Hockenson. There are few schemes and quarterback combinations better for production at the position than Detroit and LaPorta, DLF's TE16, continues to trend as training camp opens in late July. Tight ends have a notoriously long integration time into the NFL but a starting role could speed his acclimation and production.
Sam LaPorta will be fantastic · Jun 28, 2023
According to George Kittle: "[Sam] LaPorta is going to be fantastic."
Arguably, no rookie tight end has received more positive press emerging from spring practices than LaPorta, who should be an immediate contributor for the Lions. The departure of T.J. Hockenson left a huge hole in the offense, one of the best in the NFL for the position, but it appears the team has found a suitable replacement. Rookie tight ends have a notoriously long integration period but with little standing in his way for immediate production, and Jared Goff experienced at getting the ball to the position, LaPorta continues to trend higher in dynasty rookie drafts as the TE3 behind Dalton Kincaid and Michael Mayer. Kittle was effusive in his praise of the rookie and it will be no surprise if DLF's TE16 ends up pacing the position in 2023.
Sam LaPorta a favorite · Jun 9, 2023
Sam LaPorta has been a favorite target of Jared Goff, especially in the red zone.
It's been a recurring theme for LaPorta this offseason after being selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Lions traded away standout tight end TJ Hockenson (MIN) in 2022 and replaced him with LaPorta this offseason. In one of the top tight end schemes in the league, the athletic 6'4" rookie played at Iowa, a college some consider "Tight End U" and he projects highly in the Lions passing revamped passing offense. Pads aren't on yet but LaPorta, DLF's TE17, remains an upside value target in dynasty rookie drafts, still possessing a mid-second round ADP.
Sam LaPorta impresses · May 14, 2023
Rookie tight end Sam LaPorta was "making catches all over the field" in the Lions rookie minicamp.
Arguably, LaPorta falls to the best tight end situation as a rookie, in a scheme known for producing quality production at the position, and with a quarterback adept and finding his tight ends. We don't want to read too much into early camp reports before the pads go on, but all signs point to Sam LaPorta being an upside value addition at the position in the second half of the second round of dynasty rookie drafts. He's listed as DLF's rookie TE3 and our TE16 overall.
Sam LaPorta is versatile · May 8, 2023
The Lions selected rookie tight end Sam LaPorta because "He can play multiple spots, he's smart and he's faster than [Michael Mayer]."
LaPorta is arguably in the best situation from the position as a rookie, in a scheme known for tight end production and a quarterback adept at using his tight ends. With little competition on the depth chart, LaPorta should be easy to pencil is a starter in September. It's not uncommon for rookie tight ends to have long integration periods at the next level but this year's players could change that narrative. Sam LaPorta is found as DLF's rookie TE3 and our TE16 overall.
Sam LaPorta drafted by Detroit · Apr 28, 2023
The Lions drafted Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta with the 34th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Iowa tight ends have a very solid track record of success but it was still surprising to see LaPorta go ahead of players like Michael Mayer and Luke Musgrave. The Lions had a massive hole at tight end after the trade of TJ Hockenson last season and LaPorta couldn't have landed in a better situation. He could move all the way up into the second round of some rookie drafts as a result of his draft slot and new team.
