Monday Mocks: 2024 Expert Superflex Rookie Mock Draft

Ryan McDowell

Welcome to a special edition of Monday Mocks. Each week during the offseason, I’ll bring you a new mock draft on Mondays. In my opinion, drafting is the best part of fantasy football, so I do as much of that as I can. The series is filled with all types of mocks. We draft startups, rookies, devys, and more.

At this point in the fantasy season, many dynasty managers are preparing for the playoffs, though the reality is many will be left out of the dance. Those managers have likely already turned their sights towards the incoming rookie class, which always brings promise and can serve a dose of rejuvenation after a disappointing season.

Monday Mocks will return again this offseason but we wanted to give you an early look at the potential of the incoming 2024 rookie class, so I gathered a few of my friends, from DLF and all around the community.

Here is the draft order:

  1. Rob Willette, DLF
  2. Ray Garvin, Destination Devy
  3. Andrew Francesconi, DLF
  4. Kevin Coleman, Footballguys
  5. Ryan McDowell, DLF
  6. Cody Carpentier, Roster Watch
  7. John Arrington, DLF
  8. Curtis Patrick, Rotoviz
  9. Shane Hallam, DLF
  10. Nick Muzzillo, DLF
  11. Felix Sharpe, Campus 2 Canton
  12. Brandon Haye, DLF

ROUND ONE:

1.01 Caleb Williams, QB USC

It has been a difficult second season at USC for Williams, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. With a middle-of-the-pack team in the Pac-12, Williams won’t even be in consideration to be a repeat winner. His counting stats have dropped across the board this season as critics have come from everywhere, questioning his decision-making, leadership and even emotions. Williams, a 6’1”, 215-pound beast, has drawn comparisons to the best quarterback prospects to ever enter the league, including Patrick Mahomes, Andrew Luck and John Elway. The questions and doubts will continue throughout the entire draft process, but DLF’s Rob Willette is sticking with him as the top pick, saying Williams “has all the tools to excel once he no longer needs to play hero ball.”

1.02 Marvin Harrison Jr, WR Ohio State

While Williams is being grouped together with some of the top quarterback prospects ever, Ohio State’s Harrison is deservedly getting similar treatment at the wide receiver position. While it is obvious even months ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft that the top pick, and maybe even the first two off the board, will be quarterbacks, it is Harrison being tagged as the best player in the class. Harrison is on pace to exceed his impressive numbers from a year ago, already over 1,000 yards for the season and sporting 14 total touchdowns on the year. Even in another strong receiver class, Harrison is a lock to be the first one drafted in both the NFL Draft and dynasty rookie drafts. While selecting a quarterback this early would be tempting, Ray Garvin made a good point about his selection, saying “If I needed a quarterback, he’s (Harrison) the type of asset you can use to buy your way into a legit, proven asset.” Ray also noted that Harrison is the player he was the “most confident in holding fantasy value regardless of his actual outcome.”

1.03 Drake Maye, QB North Carolina

It is still so early and we have all fallen into this trap before, but it really does feel like the top-three picks in superflex rookie drafts are already decided, concluding with Tar Heels’ quarterback Maye. After posting video game-type numbers a year ago, including over 4,300 passing yards and 38 scores, Maye’s stat line this season might look disappointing. Despite that, Maye has clearly closed the gap between he and Williams in the race to be the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. While I still expect Williams to be the choice, Maybe has made his case this season. DLF’s own Andrew Francesconi made this pick and suggested Maye “has the physical tools and impressive arm talent that make him an immediate difference-maker for an NFL franchise.” Andrew also takes an early stand pegging Maye as his preference to be the 1.01 in April’s Draft.

1.04 Malik Nabers, WR LSU

Entering the season, the wide receiver group for the class of 2024 was viewed as Harrison and then everyone else. While LSU’s Nabers may not have claimed the WR1 title, he at least separated himself as another elite receiver prospect. Nabers leads the country with over 1,400 yards and he is being viewed as a top-15 pick in the NFL Draft. A member of Bruce Feldman’s “Freak List” for this season, Nabers is an explosive athlete and has the ball skills to match. I expect Nabers to top the second-tier of players and be a near-consensus 1.04 pick.

1.05 Brock Bowers, TE Georgia

It’s a bit surprising to see that a tight end is the best player on the nation’s best team but that’s the case as Bowers leads the current top-ranked team, Georgia. After missing some time with an injury that some viewed as season-ending, Bowers returned at full strength as the Bulldogs push for another playoff berth. Bowers is another pass-catcher who is currently being projected to be a top-ten pick in the NFL Draft. From a dynasty standpoint, I think there could be some concerns about Bowers’ size. At 6’4” and 240 pounds, Bowers lacks the ideal size to excel at the position, though this year’s breakout tight end Sam LaPorta has a similar build to Bowers.

1.06 Keon Coleman, WR Florida State

Perhaps no player has gained more value this season than Coleman, who transferred from Michigan State to Florida State prior to this season. The move south has been tremendous for the 6’4”, 210-pound Coleman, who has a career-high 11 touchdowns as the Seminoles top playmaker this season. Cody Carpentier selected Coleman here and suggested he could make a smooth transition to the league. “He not only has the ability to take over a game against high-end teams, in college but also the NFL. Coleman possesses an optimal alpha frame with great body control and elite catch radius.”

1.07 TreVeyon Henderson, RB Ohio State

You might have noticed that we got more than halfway through the first round without a running back being selected. Get used to that. Once again, this rookie class is not going to feature an overall strong group of ball carriers. Henderson, the former top-ranked recruit, is the current favorite to be the RB1 in the class. After an amazing freshman season for the Buckeyes, Henderson has dealt with nagging injuries that have cost him games in each of the past two seasons. Henderson rushed for over 1,200 yards and 15 scores in his first year in Columbus. While he was never able to match those numbers, he did bounce back nicely this season, eclipsing over 1,000 yards from scrimmage. Henderson is likely a second-round pick, at best, forcing dynasty managers to once again choose between Day Two running backs and Day One receivers.

1.08 Rome Odunze, WR Washington

My favorite team to watch this season is the high-powered Washington Huskies. Loaded with NFL prospects on offense, Washington is making a push for the playoffs. Odunze is the breakout star at receiver, already recording career-highs with 1,206 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Another “Freak List” member, at 6’3” and 200 pounds, Odunze has excellent speed as a former track star. Although he played well in his first two seasons, Odunze’s career took off once quarterback Michael Penix transferred out west.

1.09 JJ McCarthy, QB Michigan

With Williams and Maybe locked in as a top-two signal callers in the Draft, much of the offseason conversation will be centered on the favorite to be the QB3 in both the NFL Draft and dynasty rookie drafts. For now, DLF’s Shane Hallam is projecting McCarthy to hold that title, which will be very valuable in this superflex format. Shane suggested McCarthy’s “skillset is NFL-ready” while predicting that he could climb as high as 1.04 in dynasty rookie drafts.

1.10 Emeka Egbuka, WR Ohio State

While he sometimes gets overlooked in favor of his teammate, Harrison, Buckeyes WR2 Egbuka is yet another receiver currently projected as a first-round NFL Draft pick. In fact, based on early mock draft “ADP” Egbuka could be a top-15 selection. Egbuka has top-end speed and can do it all as a receiver. An excellent route runner and a willing blocker, Egbuka offers a unique skillset compared to other receivers in the class. DLF’s Nick Muzzillo grabbed Egbuka here and admitted that while “Egbuka has struggled to match his 2022 production but he will still be a day one pick and have an early role.”

1.11 Devontez Walker, WR North Carolina

It has been a wild season for Walker, who battled the NCAA in an effort to suit up for the Tar Heels this year. Walker, who transferred to Chapel Hill following two seasons at Kent State, finally won his appeal and got on the field after missing the start of the season. In just seven games, Walker quickly became Maye’s favorite target. He leads the team with 39 receptions for 670 yards and six scores. Felix Sharpe pointed out Walker’s athleticism, size, versatility, and hands as reasons to make him the pick here in the late part of the first round. Felix also suggested Walker will “continue to ascend as the draft process moves forward.”

1.12 Michael Penix, QB Washington

If Michigan’s McCarthy is not the QB3, the next candidate is Penix, who has helped make Odunze a household name among dynasty managers. Now in his sixth college season after spending four years at Indiana, Penix has flourished in the high-powered Washington offense. After tossing 29 touchdowns in four partial seasons in Bloomington, Penix has accounted for 68 scores (and counting) the past two years for the Huskies. DLF’s Brandon Haye thinks Penix is a future starter at the next level, adding Penix, “has the tools to be successful, especially in a wide-open system.”

ROUND TWO:

2.01 Troy Franklin, WR Oregon
2.02 Bo Nix, QB Oregon
2.03 Jonathon Brooks, RB Texas
2.04 Bucky Irving, RB Oregon
2.05 Xavier Worthy, WR Texas
2.06 Xavier Legette, WR South Carolina
2.07 Braelon Allen, RB Wisconsin
2.08 Adonai Mitchell, WR Texas
2.09 Blake Corum, RB Michigan
2.10 Trey Benson, RB Florida State
2.11 Audric Estime, RB Notre Dame
2.12 Donovan Edwards, RB Michigan
