The Bears are transitioning into a run-heavy team with the outside zone
The move should help second-year quarterback Justin Fields but will also be a boon for the underrated David Montgomery. If not for missed games in 2021, Montgomery would have produced his second 1,000-yard campaign though with a less-than-ideal 3.8 ypc. average due to teams playing closer to the line of scrimmage with Fields at under-center. Now with a lead blocker in front of him, Fields gaining experience and said to be looking strong in camp, the outside zone scheme should feature Montgomery which should also pay dividends in the passing game as well. In his age-25 season, David Montgomery is found as DLF's RB20, providing for solid value-based upside as a back-end RB2.

comment Montgomery is in a tough spot. He has shown he can be an effective lead runner, yet Chicago is bereft of talent, and he is heading into the final year of his deal. It seems unlikely a team in a full rebuild like Chicago spends on any money on Montgomery's second contract, putting his long-term value in flux. Of course, for 2022, Montgomery has little competition for touches. He could easily provide a starting season as a volume-based runner. |
