The Dynasty Aftermath: Trades Gone Wrong

Ken Kelly

Welcome to DLF’s Dynasty Aftermath. This staple article is our longest running signature piece as we have a little fun after a tough week at the Dynasty League Football office. You’ll find this article will review the week’s happenings in a variety of ways and help set you up for the coming weeks as we spin around the league in the way we know best. Expect it each and every week. I’ve written this column for the past eighteen years (I cannot believe I just typed that) and I love it . I enjoy combing through the stats of the week on Monday night, putting together ridiculous lineups, picking MVPs/LVPs and discussing things to worry about.

That’s not all. I also really love sharing observations, little bits of entertainment or some stories with the community of DLF and picking a theme for this column each week. You really never know what you’re going to get.

We’ve all had them – dynasty trades that have gone terribly wrong. I’m no different and this year’s is epic. About a month ago, I traded two future first round picks to acquire Joe Mixon and Cooper Kupp in an effort to win my longest-running dynasty league. In the two week playoff, this is what I got out of them:

Mixon = BYE week (yes, I knew) and 10.6
Kupp = 20.2 and ZERO

So, I ended up with a grand total of 30.8 points from those two in my two-week playoff and while some of that is because of a bye week, it ended up being a disaster as Kupp laid a huge egg and I lost by ten in a high scoring two-week affair.

I’m not writing this to make anyone feel sorry for me. It’s quite the contrary. Playing this game means you need to take some calculated risks. Sometimes they work out and sometimes they don’t. You just need to deal with the consequences. If you had a deal gone wrong or a lineup move that cost you a playoff spot, don’t dwell on it. Luck plays a bigger part in this game than many people realize.  I would be curious to see some of you trades gone wrong in the comments section, though.

Let’s get to it…

Fantasy MVP of the Week

It’s been a weird season for Davante Adams, to say the least. However, he put on a vintage performance this week with nine catches for 198 yards and two touchdowns with all of it coming in the second half of the game. It reminded everyone he may not quite be ready for the scrap heap.

Fantasy LVP of the Week

As I mentioned above, you win some and you lose some. Cooper Kupp posted his worst game since 2019 with no catches in a Thursday night game against the 49ers. This was a death sentence for fantasy managers this week and a huge disappointment.

The Unbeatable Lineup of the Week

QB Jared Goff DET = 494 passing yards, five touchdowns
RB James Conner ARI = 110 rushing yards, five catches, 28 receiving yards, two touchdowns
RB Jahmyr Gibbs DET = 31 rushing yards, five catches, 83 receiving yards, two touchdowns
RB James Cook BUF = 105 rushing yards, one catch, 28 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Davante Adams NYJ = Nine catches, 198 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Mike Evans TB = Nine catches, 159 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Amon-Ra St. Brown DET = 14 catches, 193 receiving yards, one touchdown
TE Jonnu Smith MIA = Nine catches, 48 receiving yards, one touchdown

The Underdog Lineup of the Week

QB Aaron Rodgers NYJ = 289 passing yards, 45 rushing yards, three touchdowns
RB Tyjae Spears TEN = Five rushing yards, six catches, 87 receiving yards, two touchdowns
RB Jerome Ford CLE = 84 rushing yards, two catches, 20 receiving yards, one touchdown
RB Justice Hill BAL = Seven rushing yards, five catches, 61 receiving yards, one touchdown
WR Rashod Bateman BAL = Three catches, 80 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Jalen Coker CAR = Four catches, 110 receiving yards, one touchdown
WR Xavier Worthy KC = 30 rushing yards, six catches, 46 receiving yards, one touchdown
TE Brenton Strange JAX = 11 catches, 73 receiving yards

The Disappointing Lineup of the Week

QB Brock Purdy SF = 142 passing yards, one interception
RB Nick Chubb CLE = 41 rushing yards, one broken foot
RB Javonte Williams DEN = 15 rushing yards, two catches, eight receiving yards
RB Derrick Henry BAL = 67 rushing yards
WR Cooper Kupp LAR = No catches
WR Jaylen Waddle MIA = No catches
WR Amari Cooper BUF = No catches
TE Luke Schoonmaker DAL = No catches

Gut Checks

I’d be worried if I was counting on Nick Chubb from this point forward.

I’d be worried if I built my team around Kirk Cousins.

I’d be worried if I was still underestimating Baker Mayfield.

I’d be worried if I was in any way disappointed in Brock Bowers after a couple of poor weeks.

I’d be worried if I was hesitating on starting Jonnu Smith.

I’d be worried if I traded for Cooper Kupp in an effort to win this season.

I’d be worried if I still thought Travis Kelce was the TE1.

I’d be worried if I still thought Deebo Samuel was elite.

I’d be worried if I was ignoring the season from Courtland Sutton.

I’d be worried if I thought Javonte Williams was going to be the starter in Denver next year.

I’d be worried if I needed a healthy Patrick Mahomes at the moment.

I’d be worried if I needed either Kansas City running back the next two weeks.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t really impressed with James Conner.

I’d be worried if I was still starting Amari Cooper.

I’d be worried if I was playing against Jahmyr Gibbs moving forward.

I’d be worried if I was underestimating Josh Jacobs.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t disappointed in the season turned in by Tank Dell.

I’d be worried if I thought Mike Evans wasn’t going to hi 1,000 yards.

I’d be worried if I thought I knew which Ravens receiver to trust.

‘I’d be worried if I was relying on any Chargers running back.

I’d be worried if I thought Geno Smith was the long-term answer in Seattle.

I’d be worried if I thought Jaxon Smith-Njigba was still the WR2 there as well. He’s the WR1.

I’d be worried if I had Kirk Cousins.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t little disappointed in Marvin Harrison Jr. this year.

I’d be worried if I still thought Jonathan Taylor was a player to build around.

I’d be worried if I thought Brock Purdy was completely entrenched moving forward. He needs another good game or two.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t impressed with the recent play of Rico Dowdle.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t keeping an eye on Isaiah Davis.

Dynasty Rookie Rankings

Always check our latest rankings to see the updates throughout the week. These rankings are simply my own.

1.) Brock Bowers, TE LV
Another off week, but agian, who cares.

2.) Malik Nabers, WR NYG
The Giants need to get him the ball somehow.

3.) Brian Thomas, WR JAX
Love his consistency.

4.)  Marvin Harrison Jr WR ARI
I’ve been stubborn about moving him down, but he hasn’t played well enough to stay at the top, even with a solid quarterback.

5.) Jayden Daniels, QB WAS
QB1 long-term

6.) Ladd McConkey WR LAC
Hard to argue at this point.

7.) Rome Odunze, WR CHI
I don’t have a ton of faith in the Bears long-term.

8.) Bo Nix, QB DEN
He’s been so much better than expected most of the season.

9.) Bucky Irving, RB TB
Still solid.

10.) Xavier Worthy, WR KC
It’s still been a disappointing season, but he’s shown some flashes.
