The name of the game for this week’s article is going to be players that *could* gain value this off-season due to free agency or changing situations. Some of these players could be readily available to be added on waivers, but others might be rostered, but you might just need to pay a 3rd or even a 4th to buy them if you believe in them that strongly.
Drew Lock, QB NYG
If you’re looking for the next Sam Darnold, who was the next Baker Mayfield, who was the next Geno Smith, then that might be Drew Lock this year. This free agent quarterback class is really not that impressive besides Darnold and the two Steelers guys, but Lock fits the profile of a 2nd-chance starter in some ways: he’s relatively young, he’s a gunslinger, he has decent experience as a starter in multiple offenses, and all of that could equate to a team looking at him as a cheap bridge option for their newly drafted 2025 rookie OR to wait it out until the projected better 2026 class.
There are teams that could use a bridge QB with solid weapons to throw to like the Jets, Browns, Raiders, and maybe even the Giants again. It’s a low-cost bet that could result in a nearly free starting quarterback for 2025.
Mason Rudolph, QB TEN
In a similar vein, an even cheaper bridge quarterback option this year could be Mason Rudolph, who already was handed the Titans job over a struggling Will Levis, so if one NFL team made the decision to turn to Rudolph, maybe another one will in the off-season? Or maybe Tennessee goes back to him for 2025? All I’m saying is that in six games played for Tennessee, Rudolph was on a 17-game pace for 3900 yards and 26 touchdowns (and 26 INTs, but hey, focus on the other numbers). Again, it’s a low-cost bet for a potentially free starting quarterback in 2025.
MarShawn Lloyd, RB GB
It’s hard to recommend running back stashes because of how much changes year-to-year in the RB landscape, but when everyone talks about the best RB stashes for 2025, they always mention Trey Benson, Blake Corum, Jaylen Wright, basically all 2024 rookies who could get a bigger role in 2025, and I rarely hear MarShawn Lloyd’s name mentioned as often as the other three. And I know why, it’s because he didn’t really play at all, he played 10 snaps total in 2024 as he fought through multiple injuries. But Lloyd was a very popular sleeper player during draft season last year and has been pegged as the new AJ Dillon in Green Bay’s offense, or at worst a very elite handcuff to Josh Jacobs. He’s essentially the 2025 version of Kendre Miller and is a fantastic stash for next year.
Will Shipley, RB PHI
Another 2024 rookie running back I love stashing is Will Shipley with the Philadelphia Eagles, and another player who barely saw the field in 2024 with 29 total snaps throughout 15 active games. But the main reason for Shipley’s lack of snaps and touches in Kenneth Gainwell is a free agent this off-season, which could open up the RB2 role for the former 4th rounder. You’re not stashing Shipley for any RB1b role with Saquon Barkley, but a potentially great handcuff is more than enough to stash Shipley.
Jalen Coker, WR CAR
Moving to wide receiver, the name everyone always mentions for a 2025 stash is Panthers receiver Jalen Coker, who flashed in multiple games this year as a big-play threat for the Panthers, and this Panthers offense could use a lot more of that moving forward. This team is going to go through a lot of changes over the next year or so, which they already started by cutting Terrace Marshall, trading Jonathan Mingo and Diontae Johnson, you have an aging Adam Thielen, a decent but much more to be desired Xavier Legette, and David Moore is a free agent if that counts at all… and that’s kind of it. So Coker should definitely be stashed as the potential WR2a/2b option in 2025.
Andrei Iosivas, WR & Jermaine Burton, WR CIN
The next two names are two more popular stash names in Andrei Iosivas and Jermaine Burton of the Cincinnati Bengals, and really for one reason only: Tee Higgins’ impending free agency. Now, I am actually of the opinion that Cincy finds a way to re-sign Higgins AND pay Ja’Marr Chase because the salary cap doesn’t exist, but should Higgins walk, both Iosivas and Burton could be major beneficiaries. Iosivas has the current WR3 role, so he seems like the logical replacement, but Burton was supposedly drafted with that WR2 role in mind based on sheer talent, he just needs to get his head screwed on straight. Either way, both guys are worth the stash in case of an increased role in 2025.
Roman Wilson, WR PIT
Another 2024 rookie receiver to stash is Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson, who you may have actually forgotten about because he played a grand total of five snaps this year due to injuries, and honestly as a Steelers fan myself, I don’t even remember those five snaps. But Wilson was drafted as the hopeful Diontae Johnson replacement as the possession WR2 with George Pickens, and boy do the Steelers need some receiver help. So if Wilson is somehow available on waivers, he’s a must-add, and if you feel strongly about him to buy him in a trade, you could pay a 3rd or multiple 3rds for the shot on the Steelers WR2.
Rondale Moore, WR ATL
Another player who missed all of 2024 was Rondale Moore, who was traded to the Falcons in the off-season, but then tore his ACL in August and never had a chance to see the field on a new team. Well, Moore is a free agent in 2025, so he could have his pick of landing spots to come back to and depending on the team he signs with, could find himself in a valuable role. Imagine if he signed with the Commanders as the potential WR2 for Jayden Daniels, or the Texans to replace Tank Dell in 2025. Dallas, Cincy, Denver, Vegas, Cleveland because Elijah Moore is a free agent – there are teams out there that need WR help and if things go his way, Rondale could be a sneaky option more often than not next year.
John Metchie, WR & Xavier Hutchinson, WR HOU
Speaking of the Texans, both John Metchie and Xavier Hutchinson are good stashes for the off-season based on the potential for increased roles depending on how Houston addresses their wide receiver room. I already mentioned the projected absence of Tank Dell next year after his horrific knee injury, plus Stefon Diggs is a free agent also coming off a torn ACL, so depending on if Houston adds a significant WR2 piece or not, Metchie and/or Hutchinson could become the de facto WR2/WR3 next year for CJ Stroud.
Malachi Corley, WR NYJ
And finally for the receiver stashes, another 2024 rookie who barely played in Malachi Corley for the New York Jets. And let me just say, I hate the fact that Corley was basically benched for fumbling the ball on the goalline back in Week 9. So I’m hopeful that with a potentially massively overhauled Jets team and coaching staff in 2025 Corely gets a much bigger role in the offense because his college tape shows an immensely talented and versatile player that the Jets could really use, especially if they lose Davante Adams. So don’t overlook Corely if he’s on waivers or as a throw-in in your next trade.
Alright, now the next eight players are all tight ends with essentially the same story, so let’s quickly list them and I’ll give a one sentence explainer for why they make good stashes:
- Ja’Tavion Sanders, TE CAR – really solid rookie campaign and I’m hopeful for an increased role as a top target option for Young next year.
- Theo Johnson, TE NYG – another rookie with a really good season that he can build off of in 2025 with a potential rookie QB and maybe a new offensive system?
- Ben Sinnott, TE WAS – oh look, another rookie TE but with basically zero stats compared to Sanders and Johnson. Zach Ertz is a free agent this year, so maybe Sinnott becomes the new Trey McBride or Dallas Goedert.
- Brenton Strange, TE JAC – Evan Engam has been a semi-popular name for a cap casualty this off-season for a rebuilding Jaguars offense, and Strange flashed in multiple games as the team’s TE1.
- Michael Mayer, TE LV – Mayer is a super talented tight end, he just, unfortunately, plays behind the BEST tight end in the NFL. He’s a great handcuff though, if there is such a thing as tight end handcuffs, a la Isaiah Likely, or maybe Mayer gets traded? Either way, he’s talented and I want talented players on my team.
- Luke Schoonmaker, TE DAL – another “handcuff” who flashed when Jake Ferguson was out this year. Ferguson has one year left on his rookie contract, so maybe the Cowboys let him walk like they did Dalton Schultz and Schoonmaker gets the job in 2026.
- Noah Gray, TE KC – maybe Travis Kelce finally retires?
- Erick All, TE CIN – Mike Gesicki is a free agent, plus if Higgins walks and All is the Bengals TE1, he could be a bigger part of the offense as the second or third option on the team.
