Taking advantage of potential valuation trends in the trade market is imperative. That is even more true during the season when players can experience wild valuation changes on a week-to-week basis. Each week, I will be highlighting some players you should be looking to move or acquire and the reasons why.
When trading for players in dynasty, you usually think of the glamorous roster-defining trades involving superstars or multiple early picks. However, the smaller fringe of the roster moves can impact your roster and help put you in a good place moving forward. This brings me to O'Connell. He is not exactly a superstar, and the general consensus is that he will likely be replaced this off-season.
However, there is a world where the Raiders do not have an obvious path to replace him. They will probably be picking outside the top ten in the draft, and despite having potentially more than $50m in cap space next year, they may not want to pay for a veteran in free agency, considering they're already paying Jimmy Garoppolo $28m in 2024. They could be a candidate to trade for a player like Justin Fields, but they may feel the roster isn't in the right place to make an aggressive trade.
So that brings me back to O'Connell, who hasn't set the world alight but has performed admirably as a fourth-round rookie. Could the Raiders kick the can down the road at the quarterback position and opt for a roster reset this year, giving O'Connell another season to prove his worth? If that happens, he will be a starting quarterback, and any starting quarterback has value in a superflex league. If you can acquire O'Connell for a third or maybe two, he could be a low-cost speculative option as your QB3/4 that would help fill a gap in bye weeks or should injuries hit.
