The name of the game for this week’s article is going to be players that *could* gain value this off-season due to free agency or changing situations. Some of these players could be readily available to be added on waivers, but others might be rostered, but you might just need to pay a 3rd or even a 4th to buy them if you believe in them that strongly.
If you’re looking for the next Sam Darnold, who was the next Baker Mayfield, who was the next Geno Smith, then that might be Drew Lock this year. This free agent quarterback class is really not that impressive besides Darnold and the two Steelers guys, but Lock fits the profile of a 2nd-chance starter in some ways: he’s relatively young, he’s a gunslinger, he has decent experience as a starter in multiple offenses, and all of that could equate to a team looking at him as a cheap bridge option for their newly drafted 2025 rookie OR to wait it out until the projected better 2026 class.
There are teams that could use a bridge QB with solid weapons to throw to like the Jets, Browns, Raiders, and maybe even the Giants again. It’s a low-cost bet that could result in a nearly free starting quarterback for 2025.
In a similar vein, an even cheaper bridge quarterback option this year could be Mason Rudolph, who already was handed the Titans job over a struggling Will Levis, so if one NFL team made the decision to turn to Rudolph, maybe another one will in the off-season? Or maybe Tennessee goes back to him for 2025? All I’m saying is that in six games played for Tennessee, Rudolph was on a 17-game pace for 3900 yards and 26 touchdowns (and 26 INTs, but hey, focus on the other numbers). Again, it’s a low-cost bet for a potentially free starting quarterback in 2025.
It’s hard to recommend running back stashes because of how much changes year-to-year in the RB landscape, but when everyone talks about the best RB stashes for 2025, they always mention Trey Benson, Blake Corum, Jaylen Wright, basically all 2024 rookies who could get a bigger role in 2025, and I rarely hear MarShawn Lloyd’s name mentioned as often as the other three. And I know why, it’s because he didn’t really play at all, he played 10 snaps total in 2024 as he fought through multiple injuries. But Lloyd was a very popular sleeper player during draft season last year and has been pegged as the new AJ Dillon in Green Bay’s offense, or at worst a very elite handcuff to Josh Jacobs. He’s essentially the 2025 version of Kendre Miller and is a fantastic stash for next year.
