2024 NFL Draft: What We Expect for Day 2

Bruce Matson

The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft was very fantasy football-friendly. We saw wide receivers and quarterbacks fly off the board early in the draft. There were some surprises with the quarterbacks. The draft surprised with a couple of wide receivers at the end of the first round.

The second and third rounds of the draft will fill out of dynasty rookie drafts. This is where we will find the values. There’s still a lot of talent left on the board. We have first-round caliber wide receivers and all the running backs. Pay close attention to the draft on Friday night because you never know.

QUARTERBACK

Like we all thought going into the draft, Caleb Williams was the first player drafted by the Chicago Bears. He will be the face of the franchise. Dynasty gamers will be selecting him at the 1.01 in Dynasty superflex drafts. Then, the Washington Commanders selected Jayden Daniels. He will get the opportunity to sling the rock to Terry McLaurin this year. The Patriots swooped in at three overall to draft Drake Maye, making it three quarterbacks off the board to start the draft. It will be interesting to see how quickly he develops with the Patriots, considering the team is rebuilding. Dynasty gamers might catch him at a slight discount in rookie drafts this year because he is part of the Patriots’ rebuild.

Everybody was shocked when they selected Michael Penix at eight overall. There were some rumors right before the draft that Penix would get drafted higher than expected. What makes this shocking is Kirk Cousins’ massive contract, and we might see Penix waiting in the wings a bit before getting his chance to be the team’s franchise quarterback.

The Minnesota Vikings did what we expected them to do by drafting JJ McCarthy. They desperately needed a quarterback. We should see him get pushed up the board in rookie drafts, considering he’s a top-ten pick who will be throwing to one of the best wide receivers in the league, Justin Jefferson.

With the 12th pick, the Denver Broncos selected Bo Nix from Oregon. He was the sixth quarterback selected in the first round. Six quarterbacks were drafted in the first 12 picks, ending the great quarterback run of 2024. Nix will take on the tough task of being part of one of the toughest rebuilds in the NFL, with Russell Wilson’s contract looming over the team’s head.

Spencer Rattler is expected to be the first quarterback selected on day two. He could get drafted in the second round since the quarterback well is dry. Ratter was a big-time prospect out of high school who flashed his talents early during his tenure at Oklahoma. His play eventually soured, and he transferred to South Carolina, where he rebuilt his draft stock. Rattler appears to be an outstanding developmental quarterback at a good value. He has a lot of upside, and if given the chance to develop, he could become the surprise player in this year’s draft.

Michael Pratt from Tulane is another quarterback we could see come off the board on Friday night. He has a fast mental processor with good anticipation. Pratt projects as a developmental quarterback at the next level.

The other quarterbacks we could see come off the board later in day two are Kedon Slovis from BYU, Devin Leary from Kentucky, Sam Hartman from Notre Dame, Joe Milton from Tennessee, and Jordan Travis from Florida State. Not all of these quarterbacks will get drafted on Friday night. Since we saw a massive quarterback run in the first round, we could see a run for developmental quarterbacks since the well was dry. All of these quarterbacks received some draft buzz either during their college career or draft season.

Quarterbacks that we could see drafted on day two:

  • Spencer Rattler
  • Michael Pratt
  • Kedon Slovis
  • Joe Milton
  • Devin Leary
  • Sam Hartman

RUNNING BACK

As expected, we did not see any running backs get drafted in the first round. We should see the first running back come off the board in the second round of the draft. We could see a handful of backs get drafted in the second round. More than likely, most of the meat will come off the bone in the third round, with talent leading into day three.

Jonathan Brooks is one of the top running backs on the board. If he didn’t have the ACL injury, he would be a heavy candidate to get drafted in the first round. Trey Benson has good size-adjusted athleticism and runs with a lot of pop in his step. Dynasty gamers are looking for him to come off the board early on day two.

Can Jim Harbaugh refrain from over-drafting Blake Corum? He’s a very dependable lunch pail running back. I can’t imagine him falling to day three. Then there’s Jaylen Write from Tennessee, who won the combine with his 40-yard dash. He’s a home run hitter who could climb in Dynasty ADP and the rankings if he lands in the right spot.

All of the running backs are still on the board. This running back class will be selected in the second round of our rookie drafts tomorrow night. The general public comes for the draft’s first round, but the dynasty degenerates salivate for the second and third-round picks.

2024 DRAFT COVERAGE 3

WIDE RECEIVER

Marvin Harrison Jr. was the first wide receiver selected at four overall to the Arizona Cardinals. He will be paired with Kyler Murray and will be one of the most prolific players in dynasty rookie drafts. Then we saw the New York Giants draft Malik Nabers to pair him with Daniel Jones. Both Nabers and Harrison Jr. are top-tier prospects who should be respected as high-end rookie draft prospects.

The Chicago Bears drafted Rome Odunze and will have the opportunity to grow with Caleb Williams. If he were in last year’s rookie class, he would easily be the top wide receiver off the board. There will be hard questions between Odunze, Harrison Jr., and Nabers.

Thirteen more picks would come off the board until the next wide receiver came off the board. Brian Thomas Jr. Was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence gets a big-play wide receiver to help stretch the field. Thomas will be an easy first-round selection in 2024 rookie drafts.

The first round snuck two wide receivers with the final picks. Rickey Pearsall, who was projected to get drafted on day two, was selected by the San Francisco 49ers at 31 overall. Then, with the next pick, the Carolina Panthers drafted Xavier Leggette.

There are still a lot of wide receivers on the board. Some of these wide receivers carry first-round grades. One of the top wide receivers who will get drafted in the second round is Adonai Mitchell. He has 4.3 speed and creates separation with the created route running. We should see him get drafted early tomorrow night.

Troy Franklin is a very cerebral route runner who can also win downfield. He could be a big winner in the second round. Ladd McConkey is one of the best route runners in the class and has the chance of being the first wide receiver drafted tomorrow night. Keon Coleman is the big-bodied wide receiver in the class who excels at the catch point. His landing spot will have a significant impact on his Dynasty.

We will see a big run on wide receivers tomorrow night, and it will round out the rest of our rookie drafts. We only saw the tip of the iceberg in the first round. Javon Baker from UCF could be a sneaky pick on day two, considering he’s a very assertive wide receiver who can snap off routes with the best of them.

Roman Wilson gained a lot of steam at the Senior Bowl. There were thoughts he was going to be a first-round pick. He did well at the combine. He could be an excellent separator for his new NFL team.

Wide Receivers we could see drafted on day two:

TIGHT END

Brock Bowers fell to the Raiders at 13 overall. The Raiders are trying to figure out what they want to do at the quarterback position. Michael Mayer is also a young, promising tight end who the Raiders drafted in the second round last year. Bowers is a generational tight end prospect, and he is projected to dominate the targets eventually.

The tight end pool after Bowers is not deep, but there is some talent that dynasty gamers are looking forward to in the second and third rounds of the NFL Draft. J’Tavion Sanders, the big-play tight end from Texas, is expected to get selected in the second round. He has good size and is solid at the catch point. Sanders could be a good option in the right landing spot for rookie drafts.

Benn Sinnott from Kansas State has tremendous size-adjusted athleticism. He is a matchup nightmare at tight end. We could see him get drafted on Friday night. If he gets paired with a good quarterback, we could see him develop into one of the most productive tight ends in this year’s class.

Jaheim Bell from Florida State is one of the best movers in the class. He has the speed to separate from linebackers and nickel corners. His 4.61 40-yard dash time will get you excited about his prospect profile. In the right landing spot, he could be Temu Brock Bowers.
