ESPN's Bill Barnwell predicts that Ezekiel Elliott will re-sign with the Cowboys after failing to sign with one of his top-three teams
Elliott had suggested he'd like to sign with the Eagles, Jets, or Bengals before the NFL Draft but that never panned out. The narrative on Elliott is that he's lost his legs, a belief that played out in 2022 when the long-time Cowboy rushed for a career-low 3.8 ypc., though he still scored 12 touchdowns. Elliott turns 28 in July and could still have value in the right situation but with his DLF RB49 status in steep decline, dynasty coaches have already moved on.

Free agent Ezekiel Elliott is reportedly garnering interest in the free agent market.
Elliott himself says he's narrowed his decision to either the Eagles, Bengals, or Jets. We'll wait to see what actually happens, but it's clear Elliott has little desire to retire and wants to play for some kind of contender. His signing will be impactful one way or another, but it's way too early to speculate. It is interesting, however, to see the specific teams mentioned as it could indicate they're not done building their rosters at the position. Elliott has dropped all the way down to RB33 in our rankings and that's bound to change one way or another here soon.

The Cowboys are releasing running back Ezekiel Elliott.
After seven seasons, two rushing titles, 8,262 rushing yards, 305 catches, 2,336 receiving yards, and 8o touchdowns, it's the end of an era in Dallas. The Cowboys had to finally face the reality that Tony Pollard was simply a better running back and they did just that by signing him to their franchise tag. Owner Jerry Jones has fought this day, but Elliott just hasn't been great the past two seasons, struggling to find running lanes and turning into more of a short yardage back in the process. While Pollard's arrow is pointing up, Elliott's ranking of RB33 is going to sink even further. He may latch on with another team, but at just 27 years of age, Elliott looks cooked, giving even more validity to the idea that it's simply impossible to build dynasty teams around running backs.

According to the report, it's widely believed and understood that Elliot has lost his legs and just won't have many options on the open market. It's been understood for more than a year that the veteran back was in decline and it appears, now entering his age-28 season, he's destined for backup duty with limited touches behind a younger starter. It's all conjecture and guesswork at this point but the Cowboys have decisions ahead of them with the recovering Tony Pollard now in his contract year as a franchise tag candidate. They have also been connected to Bijan Robinson in the 2023 NFL Draft if they'd prefer to move on in entirety. As for Elliott, DLF's RB31, he appears to be on the fast track to no better than RB4 status in 2023.

Ezekiel Elliott may be willing to restructure his contract to remain with the team
Elliott looked like a shell of himself last year rushing for less than 4.0 ypc. for the first time in his career, though still remained productive. His time-share role with Tony Pollard was effective for limiting the workload of both runners. Even cutting Elliott would amount to an $11.8M dead-money hit, so if the veteran wishes to remain in Dallas, taking a decrease in pay is likely the only option to remain with the team. He's listed as a premium laden RB29 on DLF's running back rankings and with Tony Pollard expected to receive the franchise tag for 2023, Elliott's role and value should diminish notably.

Ezekiel Elliott is not expected to return to the team in 2023.
Drafted in 2016, Elliott has played well and has been productive for a long time in Dallas but it's obvious to all his time has come to an end. No longer with the dynamic or agility to carry the load, the team faces questions with Tony Pollard entering free agency, Elliott himself looking like a shell of his former self and, once again, an unfavorable cap situation. The Cowboys, no doubt, would love to see Pollard return and while they could apply the franchise tag to retain him, either situation likely spells the end of Elliott's tenure with the team. Found as DLF's RB27 and entering his age-28 season in 2023, Elliott's ranking is on the decline and there remains little to no confidence he'll be anything other than a touchdown-dependent asset going forward.
