The Chicago Bears drafted Texas running back Roschon Johnson in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
This was a bit of a surprise as the Bears already have Khalil Herbert, D'Onta Foreman and Travis Homer on the roster. Johnson has real talent and should fit the system nicely, however. His presence likely hurts Foreman more than Herbert, but this is going to be a situation to watch during training camp and the preseason.

Texas running back Roschon Johnson continues to receive buzz as a player rising on NFL Draft boards
Johnson played second-fiddle to Bijan Robinson but possesses size and run-style which have caught the eye of scouts. Averaging over 6.0 ypc. in his final season for the Longhorns, Johnson has been rising in what is considered a deep running back class in 2023 and is projected to be selected in rounds three or four. He's listed as DLF's rookie RB11 and the R25 overall.

Texas rookie running back Roschon Johnson measured in close to 6' 1/2" at the Senior Bowl
It's just over 1 1/2" shorter than his listed height but, in this situation, may be a plus considering his running back position. The NFL tends to favor compact and explosive runners and a listed 6'2"/225 lbs. frame brings into question speed, agility and pad level with the ball in his hands. Now closer to 6', all eyes will be on Johnson's long speed during the NFL Combine, though a drafting team will likely be targeting his displayed between-the-tackles ability. Running behind phenom Bijan Robinson, Johnson didn't eclipse 100 carries in any of his last three seasons nor did he surpass 600 yards over that same stretch. But with a 6.0 ypc. average in his senior season and a reduced workload, he remains an intriguing sleeper prospect in rookie drafts. He's listed as DLF's RB11 and the R23 overall.

Rookie running back Roschon Johnson broke a bone in his hand at Senior Bowl practice
Johnson has been rising of late and the plus-sized runner will likely miss a chance to add to his recent momentum when the Senior Bowl kicks off on Saturday. At 6'2/223 lbs., Johnson played second fiddle to marquee back Bijan Robinson but displayed capability in his reduced workload. Johnson only once eclipsed 100 carries, his freshman season (2019), but did manage a 6.0 ypc. average in 2022 on 93 totes. He also chipped in with 14 receptions and a touchdown as a receiver. Found as DLF's rookie RB12 and the R24 overall, drafted situation will be key for Johnson and an impressive Combine performance would add further momentum.

comment Jack of all trades, master of none, Roschon Johnson should figure into the Chicago backfield early. He does a lot of little things well which coaches adore. I do not think he has the juice to be a difference-maker but a long career is on the horizon. |
