Dynasty Fantasy Football Stat Pack: Week Two

Ryan McDowell

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably noticed a series of tweets I share on a weekly basis regarding player and team defensive performances, all from a fantasy lens. I’m going to be sharing some of that same information with you here.

I use this each week as I am making my own lineup and waiver wire decisions and thought you might find this valuable as well.

Note: The scoring system used for this data is always PPR with four points for passing touchdowns.

All year-to-date fantasy ranks are based on total points.

The top two scorers of the week at the quarterback position faced off in week two as Lamar Jackson used his arm and legs to get the Ravens out to a big lead before Tua Tagovailoa led his team all the way back to steal a win as he became the first quarterback since 2018 to pass for six touchdowns. Jackson became the first quarterback ever to pass for 300+ yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 100+ yards and a score.

Now that we are two weeks in, it is time to start tracking the top scorers for the season to date. Obviously, we’ll see some major changes early on, but Jackson, Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts are here to stay. The deeper we go on the list, we find some serious surprises, including Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, Joe Flacco and Marcus Mariota. Some will prove to be flukes but both Wentz and Goff are taking advantage of their suddenly-deep collection of offensive weapons and could continue to post solid fantasy scores.

Most QB1 Games Allowed

Five teams have allowed a QB1 performance in each of the first two weeks. That could be a fluke due to a challenging early-season schedule or the beginning of a trend. For now, it is worth noting and possibly even considering as a lineup decision tie-breaker. The Cardinals (vs Matthew Stafford), Falcons (vs Geno Smith), Lions (vs Kirk Cousins), Chiefs (vs Matt Ryan) and Raiders (vs Ryan Tannehill) are defenses to chase at the quarterback position.

As the chart shows, several teams have yet to allow a QB1 performance but the Bills, 49ers, Buccaneers, Panthers and Broncos have been especially tough against signal callers, allowing less than 30 total fantasy points through two games. This week, that means these quarterbacks could disappoint: Tagovailoa (vs Buffalo), Russell Wilson (vs San Francisco), Aaron Rodgers (vs Tampa Bay), Jameis Winston (vs Carolina) and Jimmy Garoppolo (vs Denver).

Running Back

Week Two RB1s (top 12 scorers)

Nick Chubb finds himself as the top-scoring back of the week (and the season) but his final touchdown almost certainly cost his team a win in week two. Aaron Jones and Austin Ekeler bounced back in a major way after slow season-openers while Tony Pollard added more fuel to the debate that he should be seeing more work at the expense of veteran Ezekiel Elliott.

The top story at the running back position remains the amazing comeback for James Robinson. Not only is that impressive on its own, but his return to the field and impressive play through two weeks also has major shockwaves, damaging the value of young back Travis Etienne. I feel like dynasty managers should be betting against Robinson keeping this up, but that has not worked so far in the former undrafted free agent’s career.

Most of the current RB1s are riding one big performance through the first couple of weeks of the season, but a pair of backs who were cast off by many dynasty managers this off-season have been consistent contributors in the early going. Clyde Edwards-Helaire set a new career-high for fantasy points in the season opener and had another solid outing this past week. Meanwhile, Miles Sanders was looking like such a bad option, he even advised fantasy managers not to spend a pick on him. He’s started the season well and rounds out the top-12 scorers.

The Giants, Steelers and Commanders are the three teams who have each allowed a pair of RB1 games. This week, that could benefit Elliott and Pollard, as the Cowboys face the Giants on Monday Night Football. The Steelers could be in trouble as they must try to contain the Browns’ duo of Chubb and Kareem Hunt while the Commanders host the Eagles’ high-powered offense. Sanders could be up for a third straight solid game to start the year.

The Bills, Buccaneers and Broncos have allowed less than 13 fantasy points per game to opposing running backs, making for a difficult matchup this week for Chase Edmonds (vs Buffalo), Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon (vs Tampa Bay) and Jeff Wilson Jr (vs Denver).

Wide Receiver

Week Two WR1s (top 12 scorers)

Miami receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle put on a show, both scoring 40+ fantasy points in the comeback win against Baltimore. This is the first time in NFL history a pair of receiver teammates have each eclipsed that mark in the same game. Second-year receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown kept his impressive streaks going with nine receptions for 116 yards and two scores. He’s among the biggest dynasty risers of the week as seemingly the entire community is finally ready to accept him as the elite receiver he’s been playing like since the middle of last season.

Christian Kirk and Curtis Samuel continue to play well early this season, both logging their first WR1 games. Rookies Garrett Wilson and Drake London are living up to their first-round draft capital early in the season and both are establishing themselves as the top option in their respective offenses.

Stefon Diggs’ 71 fantasy points in PPR leagues are among the most ever scored by a wideout in the first two games of a season but Cooper Kupp picked up right where he left off last season. The top-six scorers are filled with stars who could be on this list for the entire season.

Michael Thomas has had a pair of strong games in his return to the Saints and he’s currently the WR9. Serving as the top target in that offense, Thomas should continue to be a red zone threat and a reliable fantasy producer.

screenshot 2022 09 22 at 18.16.42The Ravens got smacked by the Miami receivers last week and have now given up the most fantasy points to the receiver position as a result. This week, Baltimore faces the Patriots, which could offer some relief to their struggling and banged-up secondary. The Rams and Falcons faced off last week and those two teams are next on the list when it comes to teams to target when choosing wide receivers. This week, the Rams face the Cardinals’ injured receiver corps while Atlanta will try to stop the duo of DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

The Broncos, Giants and Panthers have each permitted less than 50 fantasy points to opposing wide receivers through two weeks. Denver will try to contain Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk this week, while the Giants face CeeDee Lamb. Carolina hosts the Saints with Thomas, rookie Chris Olave and veteran Jarvis Landry.

Tight End

Week Two TE1s (top 12 scorers)

Dynasty managers were starting to give up on Irv Smith Jr and Mike Gesicki but just when we were out, they pull us back in. The pair of high-upside tight ends each posted a top-five fantasy score on the week and will likely find their way into lineups in the coming weeks thanks to that.

The world is right as Travis Kelce, Mark Andrews and Darren Waller sit atop the tight end list through two games. Of course, many dynasty players will notice a name that is not on the list at all, struggling sophomore Kyle Pitts. He has just four receptions on the season.

As is often the case, the Cardinals are struggling to stop the tight end position. Through two weeks, they’ve allowed the most fantasy points to the position by a wide margin. That makes Tyler Higbee a must-start in Week Three. The Dolphins (vs Dawson Knox) and Broncos (vs George Kittle?) are other teams to target in the early portion of the season.

On the other side of things, the 49ers (vs Albert Okwuegbunam), Rams (vs Zach Ertz), Bears (vs Brevin Jordan) and Packers (vs Cameron Brate) have each allowed single-digit fantasy points to opposing tight ends combined through two games.

Finally, here is the chart summarizing how teams have fared against each position. I’ve also included the schedule for this week for reference.
