My name is Jeff Mueller, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, and I am here to help guide you through these weekly injuries and provide (hopefully) helpful insight into how bad the injury is and what the expected timeline for recovery is for your key player. The weekly injury roundup will be posted on Wednesdays to discuss injuries that just occurred. Bye Weeks:
- Week 8: KC, LAC
- Week 9: CLE, DAL, DEN, NYG, PIT, SF
- Week 10: BAL, CIN, NEP, NYJ
- Week 11: JAC, MIA, SEA, TBB
- Week 13: ARI, CAR
- Week 14: ATL, CHI, GB, IND, NO, WAS
Russell Wilson, QB DEN
Injury: Right Lat Strain, Hamstring Strain
Return to Play: Week 8-TBD
Fantasy Impact: Wilson is reportedly “close” to playing, however Denver is on bye in week nine, so the team could elect to hold him out one more week just to get as close to 100% as possible.
Mac Jones, QB NE
Injury: Left High Ankle
Return to Play: TBD
Fantasy Impact: Jones attempted to play this week, but was visibly limited and subsequently yanked from the starting slot. I do not believe this is a permanent deal, because Bailey Zappe played horribly in the second half. The team may elect to simply wait until Jones is closer to 100%.
Baker Mayfield, QB CAR
Injury: Left High Ankle Sprain
Return to Play: TBD
Fantasy Impact: Interim HC Steve Wilks has stated that it would be pretty difficult to unseat PJ Walker as starting quarterback, so Baker may not be getting his job back once he returns.
Dak Prescott, QB DAL
Injury: Right Thumb
Return to Play: Returned Wk7
Fantasy Impact: There were no documented setbacks for Prescott in his first game back, though he appeared a bit rusty at times. I would expect this offense to start clicking once again.
Breece Hall, RB NYJ
Injury: Left Knee ACL
Return to Play: Season-Ending
Fantasy Impact: Hall was flashing dynasty RB1 overall skill-sets and production until his unfortunate injury. It has been confirmed an ACL tear, and he will now miss the remainder of the season. Michael Carter is the next man up, although the Jets just traded for James Robinson. Notably, Robinson had struggled in his last few games with the Jaguars and now goes to a team with a worse offensive line. Could be a great sell opportunity for the one-year rental Robinson.
James Conner, RB ARI
Injury: Rib Sprain
Return to Play: Week 8
Fantasy Impact: On a short week, Conner was unable to suit up for week seven. I would expect him to return for this week’s game.
D’Andre Swift, RB DET
Injury: Left AC Sprain
Return to Play: Week 8-9
Fantasy Impact: The expectation was that Swift would be able to play this past week, but he was only able to get three limited participations in and was not ready. Keep a close eye on his practice status this week. In theory, he should be ready to return.
Chuba Hubbard, RB CAR
Injury: Ankle Sprain
Return to Play: Week 8-9
Fantasy Impact: Hubbard was listed as the starting running back, however suffered an ankle sprain this past week. Monitor his practice status. D’Onta Foreman would be in line for quite the workload.
DK Metcalf, WR SEA
Injury: Left Knee Patellar Tendon
Return to Play: TBD
Fantasy Impact: The mechanism was certainly odd for an isolated patellar tendon injury. My assumption here is that it is inflamed and irritated, and will cost him 2-3 weeks.
Deebo Samuel, WR SF
Injury: Hamstring Strain
Return to Play: Day-to-Day
Fantasy Impact: Samuel has been listed as day-to-day with a hamstring strain. We know all too well from the past that Samuel has dealt with soft tissue injuries, so hopefully this truly is minor.
Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR DET
Injury: Concussion
Return to Play: Week 8
Fantasy Impact: St. Brown will be in concussion protocol this week but is expected to clear it. We found out that St. Brown actually didn’t suffer a concussion, but was pulled out of the game due to wobbliness spotted. Welcome to the new concussion protocols.
Keenan Allen, WR LAC
Injury: Left Hamstring Strain
Return to Play: Played Wk7
Fantasy Impact: There have been no reports of any re-injuries or setbacks from playing in this past week’s game, but keep an eye on his status in practice. Staley said he only played in the first half because he said he didn’t feel as strong or could push off as well as he usually can, fairly common if the hamstring isn’t at 100% yet. The bye week comes at a great time. He will be needed next week, because…
Mike Williams, WR LAC
Injury: Right High Ankle
Return to Play: 4-6 Weeks
Fantasy Impact: Williams suffered what appears to be a significant right high ankle sprain. The severity appeared to be moderate to high, with risk of deltoid ligament damage. I expect him to miss quite some time moving forward, as the mechanism was very similar to Jerry Jeudy’s when he missed 6 weeks.
Michael Thomas, WR NO
Injury: Right Toe, Potentially Turf Toe
Return to Play: Week 8-9
Fantasy Impact: Thomas was unlikely to return on a short week. I would plan for a week eight return, but keep a close eye on his practice status.
Jahan Dotson, WR WAS
Injury: Hamstring Strain
Return to Play: Week 8-9
Fantasy Impact: Dotson may have suffered a setback mid-week in practice, but was reportedly still close to playing this week. He could wind up returning this week, but keep a close eye on his ability to practice.
Rashod Bateman, WR BAL
Injury: Foot Sprain
Return to Play: Week 8-9
Fantasy Impact: Bateman remains on the injury report, but was able to play this past week. There have been no reports of a re-injury, so I would assume he plays. He will likely be dealing with this midfoot sprain all year, unless the team is doing something to offset the load (such as Najee Harris with the plate insert to reduce midfoot stress). Baltimore is unfortunately one team I don’t trust when it comes to injuries.
Allen Lazard, WR GB
Injury: Shoulder Sprain
Return to Play: TBD
Fantasy Impact: Lazard was spotted in a sling after the game after suffering a shoulder sprain. We have yet to hear about the severity, but he could wind up missing several weeks.
Nico Collins, WR HOU
Injury: Groin Strain
Return to Play: TBD
Fantasy Impact: Collins left the game this past week due to a groin strain. He could miss several weeks depending on severity. Monitor his practice status.
Dalton Schultz, TE DAL
Injury: PCL Re-Injury
Return to Play: Week 8-9
Fantasy Impact: Schultz re-injured his knee for the third time now, but was able to return to the game. He will likely be dealing with this all year long, so just keep a close eye on him. It can go south very quickly at any moment, but this week he at least put up a decent receiving line.
Darren Waller, TE LV
Injury: Hamstring Strain
Return to Play: Week 8
Fantasy Impact: Waller was spotted running routes and doing pre-game drills, so it appears that he is close to returning. Monitor his practice status this week.
Mark Andrews, TE BAL
Injury: Knee Sprain
Return to Play: Week 8
Fantasy Impact: Andrews was able to play this last week, but only received two touches. He remains on the injury report, but I would assume he plays again. Hard to say if he will put up another rough outing, but he is a tough player to sit if rostered.
David Njoku, TE CLE
Injury: High Ankle Sprain
Return to Play: 3-5 weeks
Fantasy Impact: Njoku suffered reportedly a high ankle sprain and is listed as week-to-week. I would expect him to miss around three-five weeks. Harrison Bryant should be next man up.
Daniel Bellinger, TE NYG
Injury: Left Eye
Return to Play: Out Indefinitely
Fantasy Impact: Bellinger suffered an orbital fracture and had surgery to repair, placing him out indefinitely. I won’t be surprised if it takes him six-eight weeks if not longer to return.
