The Dynasty Aftermath: Dr. Pepper

Ken Kelly

Welcome to DLF’s Dynasty Aftermath. This staple article is our longest running signature piece as we have a little fun after a tough week at the Dynasty League Football office. You’ll find this article will review the week’s happenings in a variety of ways and help set you up for the coming weeks as we spin around the league in the way we know best. Expect it each and every week.

I’ve written this column for over a decade and I always forget how much I truly enjoy it. I love combing through the stats of the week, putting together ridiculous lineups, finding waiver wire gems, picking MVPs/LVPs and discussing things to worry about.

That’s not all.

I also really love sharing little bits of my life with the community of DLF and picking a theme for this column each week. This year, I’m going off the rails a bit. I’m not just exclusively choosing movies or TV shows and sticking with them.  I’m simply picking something relevant, wacky or whatever may come into my mind each given week. My hope is each week will at least be interesting in some way and hopefully make you laugh a few times along the way.

I have an addiction to caffeine and it comes in the form of Dr. Pepper. Most people go to coffee but I hate it even though I live in the Northwest. With a little digging, it seems I’m not alone. In fact, the amount of Dr Pepper sold each year in Texas alone could fill Cowboys Stadium 338,000 times. And the number of cans sold each year in Texas could wrap around the earth’s equator eight and a half times. That seems like a lot.

Dr. Pepper is delicious because of its 23 unique flavors. Again, after some digging, I found these flavors to be cola, cherry, licorice, amaretto, almond, vanilla, blackberry, apricot, blackberry, caramel, pepper, anise, sarsaparilla, ginger, molasses, lemon, plum, orange, nutmeg, cardamon, all spice, coriander juniper, birch and prickly ash. All this time, I actually thought the flavors were Agent Orange, cancer, bleach and ammonia. I’ve honestly never said, “Ahhhh.  That prickly ash sure does taste great.”

All this got me thinking, though. If you were to create the perfect dynasty owner with 23 unique traits, what would they be?  Here would be my list:

Integrity
Honesty
Loyalty
Respectfulness
Responsibility
Humility
Anticipative
Fairness
Authenticity
Work Ethic
Dedication
Perseverance
Optimism
Reliability
Self-Discipline
Commitment
Daring
Accessible
Active
Decisive
Logical
Objective
Passionate

In short, you need to be humble when you win and still committed when you don’t. To me, those 23 character traits stood out.  If you have some you like more than others or some you’d add, let me know in the comments below.

On to week twelve!

Week Twelve Fantasy MVP

There were legitimate concerns this year about how Christian McCaffrey would hold up with an increased workload, especially when his coaching staff was predicting around what seemed like 1,000 touches a game in the off-season.  Well, he’s responded in a big way, capped off by his first ever 100-yard rushing and 100-yard receiving day, en route to 237 total yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort against the Seahawks. His owners will take it as the Panthers loss was fantasy football’s gain.

Week Twelve Fantasy LVP

I usually focus on just one player here but this week there are two who stand out – Greg Olsen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. MVS had just one catch for three yards, while Olsen secured two for 11 yards and dropped an easy touchdown. Both of these players were extremely disappointing this week and likely cost their owners dearly.

Lineup Fun

We’re adding something fun again this week. Our own Ryan McDowell had a great suggestion this year. If you fielded any of the lineups below, let us know and you’ll get a free three months of DLF Premium. We just need the league ID and a screenshot to verify and you’re off an running.  The first three to respond would win!

The Unbeatable Lineup of the Week

QB Deshaun Watson HOU = 210 passing yards, 70 rushing yards, three touchdowns
RB Christian McCaffrey CAR = 125 rushing yards, 11 catches, 112 receiving yards, two touchdowns
RB Saquon Barkley NYG = 101 rushing yards, seven catches, 41 receiving yards, two touchdowns
RB Nick Chubb CLE = 84 rushing yards, three catches 44 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Amari Cooper DAL = Eight catches, 180 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR JuJu Smith-Schuster PIT = 13 catches, 189 receiving yards, one touchdown
WR Adam Thielen MIN = Eight catches, 125 receiving yards, one touchdown
TE Eric Ebron IND = Five catches, 45 receiving yards, two touchdowns

The Underdog Lineup of the Week

QB Baker Mayfield CLE = 258 passing yards, four touchdowns
RB Austin Ekeler LAC = 35 rushing yards, ten catches, 68 receiving yards, one touchdown
RB LeGarrette Blount DET = 88 rushing yards, two touchdowns

The Disappointing Lineup of the Week

QB Matthew Stafford DET = 236 passing yards, two interceptions
RB Mike Davis SEA = 14 rushing yards
RB Royce Freeman DEN = 16 rushing yards
RB Jordan Howard CHI = 13 rushing yards, one catch, two receiving yards

WR Courtland Sutton DEN = One catch, 14 receiving yards
WR Michael Thomas NO = Four catches, 38 receiving yards
TE Trey Burton CHI = Four catches, 28 receiving yards

Gut Checks

I’d be worried if I was banking on James Conner taking me all the way. He’s hit a bit of a rough patch here.

I’d be worried if I expect consistency from Demaryius Thomas.

I’d be worried if I thought Mike Williams had suddenly turned the corner.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t believing in Eric Ebron.

I’d be worried if I  owned Blake Bortles.

I’d be worried if I  owned AJ Green. I can’t imagine they just rush him back now.

I’d be worried if I all of a sudden think Amari Cooper is a WR1 again.

I’d be worried if I was overreacting to Courtland Sutton’s slow progress after the elevation to starter.

I’d be worried if I was starting Duke Johnson. Just when you thought it was safe…

I’d be worried if I was counting on any player from Arizona.

I’d be worried if I expected that output from Lamar Miller again.

I’d be worried if I  owned Derek Carr.

I’d be worried if I thought Alex Collins was going to get that job back.

I’d be worried if I  owned Melvin Gordon. What a bummer.

I’d be worried if I was ignoring the season we’re getting from Andrew Luck.

I’d be worried if I was starting Adrian Peterson. That’s four straight games with less than 70 yards.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t noticing the progression of Josh Adams.

I’d be worried if I was starting Ben Watson.

Free Agent Find of the Week

Here’s the deal. I feel like this section of the aftermath has become a little redundant. We already post a waiver wire article each week to prep you for your weekly FAAB run or to burn your waiver priority. It’s feeling a little like double dipping since many of the same names could easily mentioned. Instead of doing that in the future, I’m going to add a name or two of players who are likely free agents in your league who you really wouldn’t even need to use your FAAB bid bucks. These are going to be deep dive players here and most are names to simply keep an eye on unless you have an open roster spot or two.

Matt LaCosse, TE DEN

The Broncos have been just ravaged by injuries and LaCosse was a beat writer favorite this off-season. He’ll get his shot now as he replaced Jeff Heuerman (who replaced Jake Butt). LaCosse had a touchdown reception this last week and it may not be a total fluke.

Previous suggestions: Jonnu Smith, Ian Thomas, Will Dissly, Geronimo Allison, Phillip Dorsett, Phillip Lindsay, Brandon Marshall, Austin Carr, Shaun Wilson, Jakeem Grant, Corey Grant, Tyler Boyd, Taywan Taylor, Mark Walton. CJ Beathard, Rhett Ellison, Wendell Smallwood, Jeremy McNichols, Robert Turbin, David Moore, Jamaal Charles, Josh Adams, Niles Paul, Roc Thomas, Chad Kelly, Damion Ratley, Raheem Mostert, Derek Anderson, Kyle Lauletta, Maurice Harris, Trenton Cannon, Rishard Matthews,  Trenton Cannon, Rishard Matthews, Brandon Powell, Logan Thomas, Mo-Alie Cox, Marcell Ateman
