IDP Snap Counts: Week Four

Tom Kislingbury

The NFL season is a quarter through already with most teams having played four games. Astonishing isn’t it?

Here’s your weekly information on the playing time changes you need to know about to dominate your IDP league.

Arizona Cardinals

Safety D.J. Swearinger played 62 of 63 snaps in this game. He’s played all but one snap for the season, which makes it very odd that he was cut after the game. Rookie Deionte Thompson (two) should join Budda Baker (62) in the starting backfield going forwards.

Rookie lineman Zach Allen was restricted to just three snaps which opened the door for Jonathan Bullard (34) to pick up playing time.

Atlanta Falcons

This season looks pretty awful for the Falcons four games in, doesn’t it?

Kemal Ishmael (40) did play strong safety with Keanu Neal out but playing two thirds of snaps isn’t good enough really. Damontae Kazee (31) continued to play mostly in the slot.

De’Vondre Campbell (59) continues to partner Deion Jones (58) with Foye Oluokun (ten) disappointing many who didn’t read DLF’s summer coverage of this team.

Baltimore Ravens

Kenny Young (23) and Chris Board (23) continue to split time next to Patrick Onwuasor (61). Yuk.

Lineman Brandon Williams missed the game which meant Chris Wormley (47) and Patrick Ricard (35) played much more than they normally would.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills stuck with their tried and tested defense against the Patriots. It worked pretty well. If only the offense could play as well.

The one big weekly change was DT Harrison Phillips missing the game and Kyle Peko (18) stepping in,

Carolina Panthers

IDP cornerback hero Donte Jackson missed the game. In his absence Javien Elliott (42) played.

Brian Burns (38) played the lowest snap count of his career so far. This was partially because Bruce Irvin (27) was finally healthy. The team could limit Burns’ snaps in obvious run situations. The panthers are also just pretty deep on the edge.

Chicago Bears

The Bears front went off again this week with sacks. This is a really well put together line.

In terms of playing time Khalil Mack (50) and Leonard Floyd (53) continue to dominate out wide. Obviously Mack is really good and Floyd is not.

On the line Roy Robertson-Harris (38), Eddie Goldman (33), Nick Williams (37) and Abdullah Anderson (22) are all getting rotated. Only Akiem Hicks (who missed this game) can be trusted.

On the inside, with Roquan Smith out, Nick Kwiatkoski (34) joined Danny Trevathan (58) with Kevin Pierre-Louis also playing. Only Smith and Trevathan should be starting options.

Cincinnati Bengals

Slot DB B.W. Webb returned this week to play 39 snaps. Tony McRae (four) and Darius Phillips (zero) missed out.

With Carl Lawson still out, Carlos Dunlap (53) and Sam Hubbard (53) dominated snaps on the edge. Neither managed so much as a pressure.

Cleveland Browns

Mack Wilson (69) played LB next to Joe Schobert (69) for the second straight game with Chris Kirksey out. Both are fine starting options.

Morgan Burnett again missed the game at safety with Jermaine Whitehead (69) impressing. Bear in mind this was his first real good game. IDP owners think he’s been really good, but it’s mostly been box score quality.

Dallas Cowboys

The edge rotation has settled down a bit but is still happening. Demarcus Lawrence (39) still lagged behind Robert Quinn (50), with Kerry Hyder (36) and Dorance Armstrong (16) getting involved too.

Leighton Vander Esch (71) had a huge game this week which was nice. But playing over 70 snaps can do that for a LB.

Denver Broncos

Todd Davis is properly back. The LB played 85 snaps this week. Josey Jewell could manage just 21 and Corey Nelson 22. Jewell hurt his leg, Nelson his eye. Rookie Justin Hollins played 34 snaps. Before this game he’d seen just nine for the season. Hollins played inside LB as well as on the edge and in the slot. He’s a fascinating player.

DB Kareem Jackson missed this game which left it open for Duke Dawson (51) to play in the slot.

Detroit Lions

CB Darius Slay missed the game. Mike Ford stepped up to play 51 snaps.

Lineman Mike Daniels missed the game after hurting his leg last week.

Jarrad Davis (68) is firmly the team’s top LB with Jahlani Tavai (14) well behind Christian Jones (51). Devon Kennard (68) of course does his own thing as the Sam.

Quandre Diggs could only manage 14 snaps at safety which left Tavon Wilson playing 66.

Green Bay Packers

B.J. Goodson played just seven snaps at LB. He was never the answer.

Za’Darius Smith (47) and Preston Smith (52) had fine game but did not rack up the sacks. Continue to start them where appropriate for OLB scoring.

Houston Texans

No significant weekly changes.

Whitney Mercilus (66) continues to rack up points, but please note he’s played 261 snaps through four games. An average of 65, that’s hefty for an edge player.

Indianapolis Colts

Rookie corner Rock Ya-Sin (67) had his biggest playing time night so far. He might be a good starting option from here on out.

DE Jabaal Sheard returned from injury to play 34 snaps. He has Justin Houston (44), Al-Quadin Muhammad (40), Kemoko Turay (13) and Ben Banogu (14) to compete with.

Anthony Walker (67) and Bobby Okereke (57) continued to fill in for concussed Darius Leonard.

With Malik Hooker out at safety Khari Willis (67) played his first full game.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Star corner and excuse-maker Jalen Ramsey missed the game. Tre Herndon (55) again filled in at outside corner.

Yannick Ngakoue and Calais Campbell (both 45) led the way on the edge ahead of rookie Josh Allen (38).

Kansas City Chiefs

DE Alex Okafor (31) had a reduced role this week with an injury. Emmanuel Ogbah (40) and Tanoh Kpassagnon (29) helped fill the gap opposite Frank Clark (64).

Darron Lee (26) played the most snaps he’s managed this year, and so did Reggie Ragland (four). Neither should be anywhere close to starting options for you.

Los Angeles Chargers

CB Brandon Facyson has had some good weeks so far but missed this game with Michael Davis (52) returning.

DE Melvin Ingram (eight) hurt his hamstring. Uchenna Nwosu (41) stepped into his role. This is a situation to watch.

Gus Bradley went back to his old tricks at inside LB. Thomas Davis (41), Denzel Perryman (28), Drue Tranquill (ten), Jatavis Brown (11) and Kyzir White (13) all played. Don’t start any of them if you can help it.

As predicted Roderic Teamer (52) played strong safety with Derwin James and Adrian Phillips both out.

Los Angeles Rams

Next to Cory Littleton (74), the second LB spot remains a muddle. Bryce Hager (12) has a minor role with Taylor Rapp (30) and Troy Reeder (18) also seeing some snaps there. Just avoid it.

Miami Dolphins

DE Charles Harris played just 26 snaps this week. This seems to have been play-related rather than injury-related. Taco Charlton (48) and Avery Moss (47) led the way in playing time. Charlton managed a second sack for Miami but he’s still not an ideal start.

At LB Jerome Baker (67) was the only full-time player. Sam Eguavoen (49) and Raekwon McMillan (43) saw some time.

Reshad Jones returned to play 66 snaps at safety alongside Steven Parker (66).

Minnesota Vikings

LB Anthony Barr (72) returned to health which meant Eric Wilson played just one snap.

New England Patriots

The Patriots played 83 defensive snaps this week. In the first three games they had seen just 61 snaps on average.

The only full-time CB is Stephon Gilmore (80), with Jason McCourty (59), Jonathan Jones (49) and J.C. Jackson (36) all playing limited roles. Only Gilmore is an IDP option.

John Simon (57) is playing comfortably more than the other edge options. Michael Bennett (24), Shilique Calhoun (18), Chase Winovich (eight) and Deatrich Wise (11) are all poor starts.

Jamie Collins and Kyle Van Noy (83) are playing pretty well at LB. With Dont’a Hightower out, Ja’Whaun Bentley (44) and Elandon Roberts (25) played a bit more. Neither is a starting option.

New Orleans Saints

At DT, Malcom Brown (24), David Onyemata (37) and Shy Tuttle (15) are all seeing snaps.

At DE, Marcus Davenport (45) continues to get close to a spectacular day, but not quite get there.

New York Jets

No snaps due to bye week.

New York Giants

LB Ryan Connelly was having a great day at LB before injury struck. It seems he may miss the season, sadly. In his absence David Mayo stepped in to play 35 snaps. Nasty. Alec Ogletree missed this game of course. Expect him back ASAP. Tae Davis may also be recalled. All of these options are bad.

Oakland Raiders

LB and one-man penalty machine Vontaze Burfict (17) was ejected from this game for a nasty hit. He was later suspended for the season. We may well have seen the last of him.

Tahir Whitehead (71) and Nicholas Morrow (62) seem to be the LBs to own.

On the edge Clelin Ferrell (66) remains the top option here. Maxx Crosby (45) picked up snaps this week to move ahead of Arden Key (42) and Josh Mauro (24). Benson Mayowa missed the game.

Erik Harris (78) played at safety alongside Karl Joseph (78). Lamarcus Joyner (76) is still playing mostly in the slot.

Philadelphia Eagles

LB Nigel Bradham had a productive day. As well he should. He played 81 snaps. He was well ahead of the other LBs — Zach Brown (56), Kamu Grugier-Hill (13) and Nate Gerry (12).

Interestingly the team did use three safeties heavily though. Malcolm Jenkins (81) and Rodney McLeod (81) were joined by Andrew Sendejo (65).

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers were clearly far better than the Bengals here, so it’s tough to take much going forwards. There were no clear trends in playing time but it seems clear that Mark Barron (66) is Devin Bush’s (69) LB partner and Vince Williams has a big job to get back in the team when he’s fit.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks continue to leave all three LBs out there for the majority of snaps. Bobby Wagner (63), K.J. Wright (55) and Mychal Kendricks (53) are probably the most interesting defensive story of the year, schematically at least.

At safety Tedric Thompson (57) returned this week to play alongside Bradley McDougald (63) with Delano Hill seeing just six snaps. McDougald continues to play deep to accommodate the LB usage. It’s hurting his productivity.

DE is one of the deeper positions in the league. This week, six separate players played at least 20 snaps.

San Francisco 49ers

No snaps due to bye week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs played an enormous 98 snaps this week. Factor this in when analysing players on this team.

With Devin White out again at LB Kevin Minter (87) again stepped in. to play next Lavonte David (98).

Shaquil Barrett (81) had another sack and an excellent day on the edge. Carl Nassib (80) didn’t quite have the same impact on the other side.

Tennessee Titans

OLB Harold Landry (64) remains the only edge player to trust in Tennessee. He’s played 238 snaps in four games which is more than the next two put together (Sharif Finch on 115 and Cameron Wake on 81).

Safeties Kevin Byard (80) and Kenny Vaccaro (75) both had productive days driven by high volume.

Washington Redskins

Jon Bostic (72) remains the only IDP LB option on this team. Cole Holcomb (43) and Shaun Dion Hamilton (26) just aren’t playing enough to trust.

Good luck everyone!
