  • Geno Smith will re-sign · Mar 7, 2023

Geno Smith reached an agreement with the Seahawks on a new 3-year contract which will pay him $52M in the first year and a total of $105M.

While we haven't seen the contract specifics yet, it seems the deal well compensates Smith in the first year of the contract with a big guarantee and then tapers off over the final two years to give the Seahawks maximum flexibility to usher in a new starter if desired. Smith came out of nowhere to lead the Seahawks and earned the Comeback Player of the Year award, and rightly so. He ended 2022 as fantasy's QB6, quite the achievement. This paves the way for the team to select a rookie (Anthony Richardson?) quarterback highly during the 2023 NFL Draft and groom him over the period of Smith's time under center. It's not out of the question that Smith, DLF's QB22, who turns 33 in October, could start for the Seahawks beyond 2023.

  • Geno Smith wins comeback POY · Feb 10, 2023

Geno Smith was named the NFL's comeback player of the year.

It's an odd distinction for Smith, who wasn't recently injured and arguable was never on the map in the first place. Still, the long-time backup was a revelation this season as he threw for 4,282 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The Seahawks are working to bring back Smith on a mutually friendly deal, but the cat is out the bag now and it's going to cost Seattle some money to do so. Smith is 32 years old and difficult to rank. He's currently our QB22, but looks like a relatively solid low-end QB1 for contending teams moving into next season as long as he stays in the Emerald City.

  • Geno Smith franchise tag amount · Feb 1, 2023

Geno Smith would carry a $32.4M franchise tag amount should the Seahawks choose to tag him.

All signs point to the team tagging Smith while drafting a rookie to start in 2024, but it's not out of the question the team agrees to a short-term deal with the veteran to keep him in the Emerald City for more than a single season. Smith came out of nowhere in 2022 to break the team's single-season passing record and likely earned the right to remain under-center to start in 2023. Found as DLF's QB21, the 32-year-old breathed new life into his career but his age and risk-on situation both work to limit his dynasty upside unless he signs a big-dollar long-term contract to remain in Seattle.

  • Geno Smith a free agent · Jan 20, 2023

Geno Smith is a free agent in 2023

Smith came out of nowhere to lead the Seahawks to the playoffs after the team traded away beloved starter Russell Wilson. Not only did Wilson turn in a career-worst performance in Mile High, but Smith went on to break the record for most passing yards. It was truly an unexpected event. Now 32, Smith made himself a lot of money with his 2022 performance and there seems to be mutual interest in a return to Seattle for 2023 and beyond. But at what cost? With two first-round selections in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft, big questions remain as to whether the team will tab a new face of the franchise under-center or, perhaps, bring Smith back as a starter on a short-term contract. Smith is found as DLF's QB21 and his dynasty future hangs in the balance of his next contract.

  • Geno Smith wants to stay · Jan 16, 2023

Geno Smith wants to end his career in Seattle.

The long-time backup was once labeled a bust, but played incredible football this year en route to a career high 4,282 passing yards, and 30 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions. The Seahawks can pretend they knew this was possible, but even Seattle could have never imagined Geno could have played this well. Now 32, Smith is going to be searching for his one big contract and he's going to get one from a quarterback-needy team now that he's shown so much growth. Now our QB32, it's going to be very interesting to see just what happens. For what it's worth, it seems Geno and the Seahawks have mutual interest.

  • Geno Smith future uncertain · Dec 19, 2022

Bill Barnwell of ESPN believes Geno Smith, a free agent in 2023, could return to the Seahawks in 2023 under the franchise tag or could move to a new team in what projects to be a hot quarterback market

2023 is shaping up to be one of the most active quarterback markets on record with Barnwell believing up to 19 teams seeking starters. Smith has made himself a lot of money in 2022 and, once believed to be only a placeholder, now could command a new short-term deal of two years for upwards of $50M. The Seahawks will hold a high draft selection due to the trade of Russell Wilson to the Broncos and could seek to usher in a new era with a high selection of a rookie starter, or bring Smith back for one more year to groom a rookie. In either case, it would appear that a high selection of a rookie quarterback during the 2023 NFL Rookie Draft is in the cards for the Seahawks and Geno Smith. Found as DLF's QB22, Smith has played himself back onto the dynasty radar and while his greatest value would be realized in a return to the Seahawks in 2023, there could be upside with a new team as well.

  • Geno Smith an MVP candidate · Oct 24, 2022

Geno Smith is in the top-five for MVP consideration through week seven

The full quote is: "Geno Smith is good. He’s really good. He’s the most accurate quarterback in football, he’s the third-highest-rated quarterback in football, he’s in the top five in MVP consideration right now, and he’s got the Seattle Seahawks alone in first place in the NFC West."Say what you will about Geno Smith but he's cooking and has single-handedly healed the wounds of the "12s" who had been reeling at the loss of northwest icon Russell Wilson. Regardless how the remaining games of the season play out, Smith has been a huge success. Now the question that remains is: "What does Seattle do in the draft in 2023 holding two first-round selections? Once, a certainty the team would be targeting a new face of the franchise, while it seems likely the Seahawks will remain on that course, Smith's performance through seven weeks is introducing new options and making this an intriguing story. For now, Geno Smith remains a compelling in-season stop-gap addition for competitive dynasty teams needing quarterback help. He's a classic sell-high for rebuilding teams and remains a sparsely ranked QB35 on DLF's quarterback rankings, showing little enthusiasm for his future potential.

  • Geno Smith cooks again · Oct 10, 2022

Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith produced 268 passing yards and three touchdowns in the team's week-five loss to the Saints.

There are so many plot lines in Smith's 2022 performance thus far. While the team is 2-3 on the young season, none of the fault lies with Smith who now has 1,305 yards, nine touchdowns to only two interceptions thus far. Over his past three games, he's averaged 304 yards while tallying a 7:1 touchdown to interception ratio. The bigger issue for the Seahawks is the defense which has now surrendered 131 points over the past four weeks. If nothing else, the defensive play ensures that Smith should continue to cook into the near future. Listed as DLF's QB36, Smith could begin to see a rise in value though dynasty coaches should fully expect the team to select a new face-of-the-franchise during 2023's deep rookie quarterback class.
