Desmond Ridder News

  • Desmond Ridder could start · Sep 10, 2022

Falcons rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder is "more likely than not" to start games in 2022

The Falcons face long odds to be competitive in 2022, sporting a 4.5 over/under mark for games won. Possessing a high 2023 draft selection in a year loaded with potential franchise quarterback talent, the coaching staff should do everything possible to see if Ridder can be the team's new face of the franchise in 2022, allowing the team to address other needs in round one. At the same time, it seems the same is being said about veteran backup Marcus Mariota who is getting his opportunity to impress out of the gate. As for Ridder, DLF's QB30, his dynasty ranking clearly demonstrates he's expected to see time as the starter in 2022 and, potentially, beyond. Should that play out, he could be an intriguing acquisition target ahead of his time under center.

  • Desmond Ridder sees first action · Aug 13, 2022

Flacons rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder was solid in his first preseason action

It was a good first performance for the rookie who was often off-target on his way to 103 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-22 passing. At the same time, he was interception free and also displayed mobility, rushing for 59 yards on six attempts. Marcus Mariota is entrenched as the starter but all eyes remain on Ridder and it will be no surprise to see the rookie see time under-center if the team gets off to a slow start to begin the season. Ridder is listed as DLF's QB30, displaying that Mariota is only believed to be a short-term placeholder.

  • Desmond Ridder won't start · Jul 28, 2022

Falcons quarterback coach Charles London said "Marcus is the starter."

Mariota as the starter has been fully expected but who is under-center come week one of the regular season isn't nearly as important as who is under center by week ten. By all accounts, rookie Desmond Ridder has impressed but there's little way the rookie would be ready for regular season work and he's best served to watch and learn with a hat and clipboard while the game slows down. Ridder only has to beat out the underwhelming tight end conversion project Feleipe Franks to lock-down the QB2 role and it's already a near certainty. He's listed as DLF's QB32 showing the expectation that he'll finish 2022 as the starter, but with little confidence in his long term upside.

  • Desmond Ridder impressing · Jun 30, 2022

Falcons rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder continues to impress this off-season

While Ridder is checking all the boxes thus far, Marcus Mariota is still fully expected to be the starter come week one. Whether he can retain the job is another thing altogether as the veteran has a very team friendly contract which won't present much of a financial hurdle when the time comes to insert Ridder. Ridder is found as DLF's QB34, ahead of Mariota's QB36 ranking, showing that the full expectation that it's "when" and not "if" the rookie is starting at some point during the 2022 season.

  • Desmond Ridder light years ahead · Jun 17, 2022

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith has been surprised with the ease at which rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder picked up the offense

Smith said "He's light years ahead of most young quarterbacks, in terms of playing from the neck up." Camp reports have been generally positive on the rookie as well, perhaps suggesting that he could be under-center if the Falcons are struggling, as expected, by mid-season. Ridder is found as DLF"s rookie QB3 and the QB32 overall showing there's expectation he'll be starting sooner rather than later. He makes for an intriguing buy-low developmental target for quarterback-needy dynasty coaches.

  • Desmond Ridder rising · Jun 12, 2022

It's only a matter of time before Falcons rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder is starting

It's not a bold call by the SI author as Ridder was a third-round selection and only has uninspiring Marcus Mariota above him on the depth chart. There's every chance Mariota surprises everyone and becomes a productive starter but word out of camp is that Ridder has been impressive. The bigger issue is the team's lack of experienced receivers outside of last year's first-round selection, tight end Kyle Pitts. If Mariota is going to take a leap, he'll have to do so with, arguably, the worst receiver depth chart in the league, though this year's selection of Drake London does provide upside. As for Ridder, the watch will be on once the team is out of playoff contention and it's not out of the question he wins the starting job outright during training camp.

  • Desmond Ridder impressing early · May 27, 2022

The Falcons have been impressed early on with new quarterback Desmond Ridder.

It's certainly early on in the process, but Ridder is proving to be a quick study in the classroom and showed well at rookie minicamp. While this is the time where all reports on players are glowing, it's worth noting Ridder is in position to get snaps early on if Marcus Mariota struggles or gets injured. He's an intriguing rookie pick this year and could prove to have early value.

  • Desmond Ridder drafted by Falcons · Apr 30, 2022

Desmond Ridder was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

The fact Ridder was taken in the third round wasn't really much of a surprise. However, the fact he was the second quarterback taken overall behind Kenny Pickett certainly was. Ridder will presumably learn behind Marcus Mariota next season, but he could take the job over should Mariota get hurt or underperform. Ridder is a boom or bust prospect, but he's a very intriguing one, especially in 2QB leagues.

  • Desmond Ridder inconsistent but savvy · Apr 22, 2022

In a piece on NFL.com quoting scouts, execs and coaches, rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder was said to be inconsistent but with poise and savviness.

Ridder's 4.52 40-time was the fastest of all quarterbacks and it's that mobility which continues to receive mention from scouts and coaches while noting a lack of arm strength and recurring inconsistency. One AFC coach mentioned he seeks to become a runner far too soon as the pocket begins to break down or he feels pressure. Ridder is coming off the board late in the first round of superflex rookie mock and live drafts and DLF's rookie QB3 should hold this value following his day-one selection during the NFL Draft.

  • Desmond Ridder making the rounds · Apr 15, 2022

Desmond Ridder visited the Colts after meeting with the Seahawks earlier in the week.

Ridder is one of the more intriguing draft prospects this year in a quarterback class seemingly missing a truly elite prospect. Seattle and Indianapolis could be interested in his services, though many other teams are also bringing him in for meetings. After a solid Senior season in Cincinnati that featured 3,334 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and just eight interceptions, Ridder is a prime candidate to be taken in the final few picks of round one so a team can retain a fifth-year option on his contract. While nothing is imminent, it's clear Ridder is one of the draft's rising prospects. Ridder comes in as our rookie QB3.
