In case you are reading this, there is one bit of information to know before you start reading names. Just like last year’s series, we will be utilizing player rostership percentages, courtesy of real dynasty rosters from 1,700 MFL leagues. While this may not be entirely accurate for every individual league, it is very reflective of how managers view who is worthy or not of a roster spot. Now that that’s covered, let’s dive into the waiver wire after week eight!
Players to double-check availability and immediately add:
- Will Levis, QB TEN
- Mitchell Trubisky, QB PIT
- Taylor Heinicke, QB ATL
- Rico Dowdle, RB DAL
- Jeff Wilson Jr, RB MIA
- Kendrick Bourne, WR NE
- Trey McBride, TE ARI
Jaren Hall, QB MIN
The biggest news of the week was Kirk Cousins tearing his Achilles, which is a complete story in and of itself for dynasty and the implications for the Vikings offense. But for the purposes of the waiver wire, Hall is currently the backup quarterback and the only other quarterback on the roster. For those who don’t know, Hall was a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of BYU and he was a pretty solid QB for them in his last two seasons, throwing for over 5,500 yards and 51 touchdowns and also rushing for 600 yards and six touchdowns in 2021 and 2022 combined, with his primary target being Puka Nacua.
He didn’t do much for the Vikings on Sunday, he came in with a 14-point lead with five minutes left in the game, so the gameplan was just to run out the clock, but he did have a nice completion to TJ Hockenson for a first down and his preseason tape was pretty solid, so maybe he can be a decent fantasy QB2 with Hockenson, Jordan Addison, and when Justin Jefferson gets back too. With all the injuries we’ve had at quarterback, plus byes starting back up again, with a pretty painful one coming in Week 10 for quarterbacks, you may just need Hall as a spot starter.
Carson Wentz, QB FA
But speaking of all the quarterback injuries, I just want to take this time to mention that it’s still ridiculous that Wentz is a free agent. I mean the Vikings are literally in playoff contention and if they wanted to keep going that route, they could opt to sign Wentz as a more solidified starter than Hall. The Jets have been talking about getting Aaron Rodgers back for a playoff run, but then they keep trotting out Zach Wilson for their bottom-ten offense in the league. Desmond Ridder got hurt, Deshaun Watson hasn’t played in a month, and the Giants had to play Danny DeVito! I’m still holding onto Wentz shares for dynasty because he’s a good *fantasy* quarterback when he plays and I think there’s an opportunity for him in the league right now.
Demario Douglas, WR NE
A repeat name from last week, but I wanted to re-iterate that Douglas should not be on waiver wires. After a really solid game last week with 54 yards on six targets, Douglas again saw seven targets on Sunday, which easily led the team. Now, maybe some of that was because both Kendrick Bourne and DeVante Parker left early with injuries, but that just shows you that Douglas is the next man up in this offense. There’s a ton of opportunity if both Bourne and Parker are out again next week, especially against a Commanders secondary that literally cannot stop a single wide receiver this year. Douglas is a massive waiver target in any league he’s still available.
Khalil Shakir, WR BUF
And lastly, another huge waiver wire target based on his usage on Thursday night, Shakir had an impressive night in the Bills’ first game without Dawson Knox, which led them to play a ton of 11-personnel with Khalil Shakir as the primary beneficiary. He played a career-high 65% of the snaps, which resulted in a career-high six targets, six receptions, and 92 yards. He’s a very good receiver and if he’s going to start playing more with Knox out, he’s not only worth a pickup in dynasty, but potentially a spot in your lineup if this usage continues over the next week or so.
