IDP Snap Counts: Week Nine

Tom Kislingbury

With a large portion of the season played out, this column shifts from uncovering players thrust into starting jobs or who aren’t getting much chatter toward highlighting relatively minor changes.

Arizona Cardinals

Haason Reddick (33) again played limited snaps with Joe Walker (42) slightly ahead in a shared role. This was basically exactly the same as last week. Reddick is a sell opportunity of you can get anything for him.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons had a bye week for Dan Quinn to desperately search for a scapegoat.

Baltimore Ravens

An excellent defensive performance for the Ravens as they turned over the Patriots.

Jimmy Smith (54) made his return at corner after missing almost all of the season so far. This meant a significant shuffle at the position.

Marcus Peters (67) and Smith played wide corner. Brandon Carr (47) was a utility player tracking around after Ben Watson. And Marlon Humphrey (67) played mostly in the slot.

LB Patrick Onwuasor (28) also returned from injury. He had a sack but obviously played limited snaps alongside Josh Bynes (25) and L.J. Fort (18). Part of that was due to fitness. Part of it down to gameplan.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills played just 51 snaps this week against the woeful Redskins.

Ed Oliver notably played just 18 snaps. It seems he took a knock.

Carolina Panthers

CB Donte Jackson (75) was back up to full speed again. Start him at will.

OLB Mario Addison missed the game. His snaps were shared among the other edge rushers but mainly Brian Burns (52) benefitted.

Chicago Bears

The Bears played 89 snaps on defense this week – compared to just 45 a week ago. No surprise a lot of production was magnified.

On the defensive line Brent Urban (37) played his first snaps as they try to replace Akiem Hicks. Bilal Nichols (68) played far more than he has in any other week this year, too.

Leonard Floyd managed his first sack since opening night of the season. He did play 73 snaps. You’d expect some production.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals were on their bye week. Which meant none of us had to watch them. Happy holidays.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns saw just 50 snaps this week against the Broncos.

Safety Jermaine Whitehead played all 50 snaps, but after some very poorly judged post-game comments on Twitter, he was released Monday. Morgan Burnett (50) steps back into a prime role and the Browns need Damarious Randall back. If he’s not good to go, rookie Sheldrick Redwine might get his chance.

Dallas Cowboys

DE Michael Bennett (42) played more snaps in his debut for Dallas than he ever did as a Patriot.

Leighton Vander Esch (who’s quietly been pretty disappointing) missed the game this week so Sean Lee played 60 snaps. The old guy’s still got it.

At safety Jeff Heath could only manage 32 snaps before getting hurt. Darian Thompson (40) came in for him.

Denver Broncos

Todd Davis (72) remains the top linebacker on the Broncos. Notably, Alexander Johnson also played 72 snaps next to him. Josey Jewell played one, and has 16 defensive snaps in the past three games. He’s cuttable.

Detroit Lions

The Lions continue to use four LBs every week. Devon Kennard (63) and Jarrad Davis (65) are about usable (although Kennard obviously needs the right scoring settings given his pass rushing). But Christian Jones (54) and Jahlani Tavai (48) are much harder to start. Jones has got a new contract and was described as a “starter” last week but he’s not a full-time player.

Breakout safety Tracy Walker missed the game hurt. Will Harris (72) and Tavon Wilson (68) played instead.

It’s 2019 and people still think Miles Killebrew (four) can become a useful IDP. Needless to say – it’s not going to happen.

Green Bay Packers

CB Josh Jackson was a healthy scratch. Apparently the people shocked by this did not realized he averaged nine snaps a game this season, with over half of them coming in one week.

Oren Burks (eight) and B.J. Goodson (13) continue to be part time role players. You’ll hear if this changes, but there’s no point repeating this every week.

Houston Texans

No-one is going to “replace” J.J. Watt. Don’t bother looking. However, Charles Omenihu (39) did get the biggest bump in playing time.

Safety Mike Adams (40) played a significant chunk of this game. Justin Reid (58) and Jahleel Addae (67) retain roles. Romeo Crennel likes to use multiple safeties.

Indianapolis Colts

Anthony Walker had a productive game at LB. But just like last year it’s tough to see it continuing. He played 46 snaps to Darius Leonard’s 63.

Safety continues to be a mess. Malik Hooker (56) led the way at FS with Khari Willis (37), Clayton Geathers (33) and George Odum (18) all seeing time too. Avoid this situation.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Lots of people were asking who Breon Borders (70) is this week. With D.J. Hayden out Borders was pressed into action at slot corner. The Jags played three corners for every snap this week too against the Texans. A lot of people are going to add Borders and be disappointed.

Quincy Williams was out of the team again with Najee Goode (61) again coming in to play LB next to Myles Jack (70). Austin Calitro played only on special teams after a starring role last week.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs missed Alex Okafor and Frank Clark this week. With them out Emmanuel Ogbah and Tanoh Kpassagnon (both 59) saw heavy workloads. They have 18 combined pressures in the last two weeks as a duo. That is exceptional production.

Los Angeles Chargers

This game saw the Chargers play just 54 defensive snaps with the Packers unable to get much going.

Breakout strong safety Roderic Teamer missed the game hurt.

Thomas Davis played all 54 snaps, but no other LB managed over 25. And still I see the likes of Drue Tranquill (22) being claimed on waivers every week.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams were enjoying their bye week.

Miami Dolphins

Congratulations to the Dolphins on avoiding an 0-16 season! It must have felt good to beat Adam Gase.

CB Eric Rowe (68) continues to play safety. He hasn’t had a breakout game yet, but he likely will.

Jerome Baker (70) continues to be the only startable LB. Sam Eguavoen (35) and Raekwon McMillan (32) are part time players – because they’re not very good.

Minnesota Vikings

There were no significant changes for the Vikings this week.

New England Patriots

With the Patriots in a proper game we saw a little more about what they do under pressure.

John Simon (42) played more than any other edge has been doing for them. Admittedly it was an unusual game-plan because of the Ravens’ predilection for running single-wing concepts with up to four men in the offensive backfield. Hence Dont’a Hightower’s big game. Hightower played 55 snaps which was high for him but not shockingly so.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints enjoyed a bye week to get Drew Brees back to 100% fitness.

New York Jets

Losing to the Dolphins was simply shameful. This team is dire.

With the injuries at LB James Burgess (69) and Brandon Copeland (also 69) were full-time players. Copeland is normally an edge rusher. Burgess is normally unemployed.

Rookie DT (47) had a sack for the second straight game. Don’t be fooled. He’s still playing very average football.

New York Giants

CB Corey Ballentine made his return to play 53 snaps. Grant Haley lost his spot as a result.

Lineman Leonard Williams made his debut after his historic move from the Jets. He played 45 snaps in a similar role. B.J. Hill (17) and Olsen Pierre (nine) appeared to lose snaps as a result.

Alec Ogletree (69) is the lone full-time LB. David Mayo (40) is too limited to be out there on passing downs. And Deone Bucannon (27) is a specialist role player at this stage of his career.

Oakland Raiders

Maxx Crosby (66) has now played 140 snaps over the past two games. Don’t be fooled; he’s not very good — not yet at least. He leads the Raiders in pass rushing but so did Arden Key last season. It’s not impressive to be the best pass rusher on a team that cannot rush the passer.

There was talk of one of the LBs being replaced this week, but it proved just talk. Tahir Whitehead (71) and Nicholas Morrow (69) remain the options.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles saw just 45 snaps on defense this week.

With Nigel Bradham still out injured Nate Gerry (44) continues to play. He’s got some fans but he’s a pretty average player.

Kamu Grugier-Hill (29) remains a bit-part actor. As he always has been.

Pittsburgh Steelers

LB Vince Williams (28) has been healthy the last four games. In that time, he’s averaged just 38 snaps. The Steelers have averaged 68 snaps in those games. Williams time as a startable IDP has probably passed.

Seattle Seahawks

CB Tre Flowers (79) returned from injury sending Akeem King to the bench.

Jadeveon Clowney (65) remains the only DE to play anywhere near a full load. None of the others should be starting for your team.

The Seahawks continue with this three-LB approach. It’s not working. This defense is dire.

Safety Tedric Thompson missed this game. Bradley McDougald (79) played strong safety with Marquise Blair (79) free safety.

San Francisco 49ers

LB Kwon Alexander (40) hurt himself badly in this game and will miss the rest of the season. Expect Dre Greenlaw (27) to step into his spot next to Fred Warner (57).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

DT Vita Vea played a scarcely believable 60 snaps this week. That is incredible for a man of his size.

Jason Pierre-Paul played 72 snaps this week. He seems fully healthy. Carl Nassib played just seven.

Tennessee Titans

CB Malcolm Butler (42) was hurt in this game and may miss significant time. LeShaun Sims (16) is the next man up after Adoree’ Jackson (62) and Logan Ryan (71).

Jayon Brown took a knock and played just 36 snaps. Wes Woodyard (40) stepped up to play next to Rashaan Evans (66) who has been piling tackles up recently.

Washington Redskins

There were no significant changes this week. Jon Bostic (62) continues to be a good LB option. DE Matt Ioannidis (45) has really blossomed recently and is turning into an impressive player. As bad as this team is, the defensive line is exciting.

Good luck everyone!
