The Dynasty Aftermath: Time to Change

Ken Kelly

Welcome to DLF’s Dynasty Aftermath. This staple article is our longest running signature piece as we have a little fun after a tough week at the Dynasty League Football office. You’ll find this article will review the week’s happenings in a variety of ways and help set you up for the coming weeks as we spin around the league in the way we know best. Expect it each and every week.

I’ve written this column for over a decade and I always forget how much I truly enjoy it. I love combing through the stats of the week, putting together ridiculous lineups, finding waiver wire gems, picking MVPs/LVPs and discussing things to worry about.

That’s not all.

I also really love sharing little bits of my life with the community of DLF and picking a theme for this column each week. This year, I’m going off the rails a bit. I’m not just exclusively choosing movies or TV shows and sticking with them.  I’m simply picking something relevant, wacky or whatever may come into my mind each given week. My hope is each week will at least be interesting in some way and hopefully make you laugh a few times along the way.

I used to love The Brady Bunch and one of my favorite episodes is where Peter hits puberty and his voice goes through changes. If you’ve somehow missed that one, watch below.

So, when coming across this episode this week, I thought of something important this week. If you’re team is constantly in the middle of the pack and you don’t seem to be making any headway each season, it’s time to change. Fantasy footballers tend to be really bullheaded and sometimes a change in strategy can be good for a variety of reasons, including making the game fun again.

Finishing in the middle of the pack is really no fun. You don’t get a premium rookie draft pick and you also don’t get to compete for a title. If you’re in this boat year after year, it may be time to look at stockpiling draft picks, loading up on veterans or just simply mixing up your roster. Change isn’t always a bad thing in dynasty leagues. While your voice may be stable, your strategy might need some work.

On to the week that was.

Week Thirteen Fantasy MVP

If you have Travis Kelce or Zach Ertz this year, chances are you’re squarely in the playoff hunt or have already qualified. Kelce is this week’s MVP after he posted 12 catches for 168 yards and two touchdowns. The positional advantage these two in particular are giving owners is enormous. Enjoy the ride.

Week Thirteen Fantasy LVP

One catch, seven yards and a season ending injury were not what owners of AJ Green were hoping for this week. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what they got. Green’s season will end and he should be ready for next year. However, he’s not going to help anyone in the playoffs this year and that’s a true bummer.

Gut Checks

I’d be worried if I was thinking James Conner was going to be out just this week. If this is really a sprain, he’s going to be on the shelf for a bit.

I’d be worried if I had Matthew Stafford. This has not been a good year.

I’d be worried if I was relying on Chris Carson at the moment.

I’d be worried if I was hoping for consistency from Zay Jones.

I’d be worried if I was relying on tight ends from the Rams.

I’d be worried if I thought Todd Gurley cared about any of us.

I’d be worried if I owned Derrick Henry.

I’d be worried if I was ignoring just how good Phillip Lindsay has been.

I’d be worried if I was overreacting to any rookie’s poor performance this year. It takes time, gang.

I’d be worried if I owned Rob Gronkowski. He just doesn’t look right.

I’d be worried if I owned David Johnson. It seems the Cardinals are trying to lighten his load now.

I’d be worried if I thought Spencer Ware was going to produce like Kareem Hunt.

I’d be worried if I own AJ Green.

I’d be more worried if I owned Greg Olsen.

I’d be worried if I was ignoring how good Adam Humphries has been.

I’d be worried if I was relying on Maurice Harris.

I’d be worried if I was expecting anything from Charles Clay.

Free Agent Find of the Week

Here’s the deal. I feel like this section of the aftermath has become a little redundant. We already post a waiver wire article each week to prep you for your weekly FAAB run or to burn your waiver priority. It’s feeling a little like double dipping since many of the same names could easily mentioned. Instead of doing that in the future, I’m going to add a name or two of players who are likely free agents in your league who you really wouldn’t even need to use your FAAB bid bucks. These are going to be deep dive players here and most are names to simply keep an eye on unless you have an open roster spot or two.

Jake Kumerow, WR GB

One catch and 11 receiving yards doesn’t exactly bring home a championship. However, Aaron Rodgers is a big fan of Kumerow’s and he’s now back from injury. Rodgers may just get whatever he wants now that Mike McCarthy is out of the picture. You could do worse if you have a roster spot to burn.

Previous suggestions: Jonnu Smith, Ian Thomas, Will Dissly, Geronimo Allison, Phillip Dorsett, Phillip Lindsay, Brandon Marshall, Austin Carr, Shaun Wilson, Jakeem Grant, Corey Grant, Tyler Boyd, Taywan Taylor, Mark Walton. CJ Beathard, Rhett Ellison, Wendell Smallwood, Jeremy McNichols, Robert Turbin, David Moore, Jamaal Charles, Josh Adams, Niles Paul, Roc Thomas, Chad Kelly, Damion Ratley, Raheem Mostert, Derek Anderson, Kyle Lauletta, Maurice Harris, Trenton Cannon, Rishard Matthews,  Trenton Cannon, Rishard Matthews, Brandon Powell, Logan Thomas, Mo-Alie Cox, Marcell Ateman, Matt LaCosse.
