Devy Fantasy Football Wrap-Up: September

Bruce Matson

With five weeks of college football in the books, we are seeing some players exceed expectations and climb the rankings in devy. We’ve also seen some players start the season off slower than expected and we are waiting for them to kick it into gear before we start to get worried about their long-term player values.

There are a lot of fun storylines to cover throughout the season as we get to see the top teams in the county get ready for conference play as they battle it out for a spot in the playoffs.

Let’s take a look at some of the top performers from the first few weeks of the season.

QUARTERBACK

Shedeur Sanders, Colorado

Colorado has been the talk of college football and Sanders has been a huge reason why the program has been successful. He started the season with a massive upset victory over TCU where he passed for 510 yards and four touchdowns. He then followed that performance with 393 yards and two touchdowns in a victory against Nebraska. He currently ranks second among all quarterbacks with 1,409 passing yards.

Spencer Rattler, South Carolina

Rattler has been battling all season. The season started with a tough loss against North Carolina and a get-right win against Furman where he tossed for over 300 yards in each game. Then he had a tough matchup against Georgia where he completed 22 of his 42 pass attempts for 256 yards and one touchdown. His draft stock will be predicated on how well he finishes the season. He has plenty of talent and all he needs to do is finish the season strong.

Sam Hartman, Notre Dame

Hartman started the season off strong. He had his first true test of the season last week against Ohio State. In that game, he only passed for 175 yards and one touchdown but he almost led the team to a victory against one of the top defenses in the nation. He currently ranks ninth among quarterbacks with 1,236 passing yards.

Caleb Williams, USC

Every week we wait for Williams’ next highlight play. He is easily one of the best quarterbacks we’ve seen from the college game. So far on the season he has surpassed the 300-yard mark twice and has 15 touchdowns. The Trojans are currently 4-0 and will be on the road to play Colorado this weekend. As we get deeper into conference play we should only see Williams add to his impressive resume.

Drake Maye, North Carolina

After four games in the books, Maye is still on pace to be one of the first players selected in next year’s draft. He has led the team to a 4-0 record with wins over South Carolina, Pitt, Minnesota, and Appalachian State. He has been very effective with a 72.7 completion rate and he currently ranks 16th among quarterbacks with 1,214 passing yards.

JJ McCarthy, Michigan

Although Michigan has not been tested yet, McCarthy has been a breath of fresh air this season, completing 79.8 percent of his pass attempts. His best game of the year came during the season opener against ECU where he completed 26 of his 30 pass attempts for 280 yards and three touchdowns. McCarthy’s stock has been on the rise all season. Let’s see how he plays when he gets tested later in the season.

Drew Allar, Penn State

Allar is the best quarterback we’ve seen from Penn State in quite a long time. He opened the season tossing the rock for 325 yards and three touchdowns against West Virginia. The true test comes later in the year when he will face off against both Ohio State and Michigan. Allar is a quarterback prospect who many devy gamers are monitoring throughout the season. He is dripping with upside. All he has to do from here is develop.

RUNNING BACK

Audric Estime, Notre Dame

Estime been a hammer looking to find a nail all season long. He started the season with 95 rushing yards against Navy then reeled off three straight 100-yard performances against Tennessee State, NC State, and Central Michigan. His power and contact balance have been on display all season as he currently averages 4.63 yards after contact per attempt.

Darius Taylor, Minnesota

The freshman running back has been one of the most productive players in the nation with three straight 100-yard performances to his name. He currently has 532 yards and four touchdowns on the season. In his last game against Northwestern, he rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Considering he was the RB23 in his recruiting class per 247Sports, he has been a major riser in devy.

Blake Corum, Michigan

Corum is quietly posting another good season after rushing for 1,461 yards and 18 touchdowns a year ago. He has 351 rushing yards and eight touchdowns this season. We’re still early in the season, but Corum is just tacking on stats and highlight reel runs to add to his impressive collegiate career. Look for him to be one of the top running backs drafted next year.

Braelon Allen, Wisconsin

Allen is looking to finish a very productive career before he leaves Wisconsin for the NFL Draft. He has two 100-yard games on the season against Buffalo and Purdue. The 245-pound running back is averaging 4.90 yards after contact per attempt. The real test comes later in October when Allen will get the opportunity to run against the Ohio State defense to show what he can do against one of the top defenses in the country.

Will Shipley, Clemson

In an upset defeat to Duke to start the season, Shipley managed to rush for 114 yards while also catching six passes. His next major contest was against Florida State where he rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown. We will get to see Shipley showcase what he can do against Syracuse this weekend as he looks to increase his stock for the NFL Draft next spring.

Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, Penn State

Singleton is considered the RB1 in devy while Allen has been flying under the radar. Both running backs have been sharing the workload as Allen leads the team with 280 rushing yards while Singleton has 203 rushing yards to his name. Devy gamers should expect both of these running backs to produce during their tenures at Penn State.

WIDE RECEIVER

Rome Odunze, Washington

Odunze has quietly posted 100 yards in every game this season. His best performance came against Michigan State where he caught eight balls for 180 yards. Last week against Cal, he caught five passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns. His size-adjusted speed makes him a nightmare after the catch. I look forward to seeing him produce for the rest of the season.

Malik Nabers, LSU

Nabers currently owns a 38.65 percent share of LSU’s passing production. He’s always a big play waiting to happen. Against Mississippi State, he caught 13 balls for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Then he followed that performance with eight catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns last week. Nabers is blowing up and he should finish the year strong.

Luther Burden, Missouri

Burden is putting together a tremendous sophomore season, owning a 44.72 percent market share of Missouri’s passing offense. He has over 100 yards in each of his last three games. In his last performance against Memphis, he caught ten of his 12 targets for 177 yards. Burden will be climbing up the devy ranks this season.

Marvin Harrison Jr, Ohio State

We need to wrap him up in bubble wrap. Harrison had a few close calls this season. Last week against Notre Dame he experienced an ankle injury but he taped it up and continued to play on it. If anything, he is demonstrating that he’s more than willing to play through injuries. As you would expect, Harrison Jr has been a highlight reel machine this season. He already has 17 catches for 336 yards and three touchdowns on the season.

Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State

After delivering his first 1,000-yard season last year, Egbuka looks to improve on those numbers in 2023. He was a featured weapon against Notre Dame last week, catching seven balls for 96 yards. It’s been an off-and-on season as the quarterback play has been volatile. Nonetheless, Egbuka is one of the best wide receivers in the country as he looks to add to his resume before leaving the Buckeyes for the NFL Draft.

Troy Franklin, Oregon

Franklin plans to dominate this season. He has surpassed the 100-yard mark in three of the four games that he played. He owns a 30.85 percent market share of Oregon’s passing offense. He already has five touchdowns on the season. Franklin is on pace to close out the season as one of the most productive wide receivers in the country.

Keon Coleman, Florida State

Coleman has been one of the biggest risers this season. He has been dominant this season making multiple big-time plays. Coleman displays excellent ball skills and he’s very strong at the catchpoint. He started the season with nine catches for 122 yards and three touchdowns against LSU. Since then, has been considered one of the top wide receivers in the country.

TIGHT END

Ja’Tavion Sanders, Texas

Sanders already has two 100-yard performances on the season which is very impressive for a tight end. Against Alabama in week two, he caught five passes for 114 yards. He leads the Longhorns in receiving while owning a 24.19 percent market share of the team’s passing production. Sanders ranks eighth among tight ends with 23 targets.

Brock Bowers, Georgia

Bowers is a generational tight-end prospect who has the receiving production and the size-adjusted speed to make him a top-tier option in rookie drafts next year. He leads the Bulldogs in receiving with 22 catches for 256 yards and two touchdowns. In his last game against UAB, he caught all nine of his targets for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
