NFC IDP Snap Counts: Week Six

Tom Kislingbury

This week was a bit of a wasteland in many ways for IDP owners. A lot of big names went missing and there were relatively few superstar performances.

But still – in 2020 we win IDP leagues by focus and persistence. So there are bargains to be found…

READ: AFC IDP Snap Counts: Week Six

Arizona Cardinals – 89 snaps

The Cards played more than 20 snaps more in this game than they had so far in 2020 which explains the sudden surge in IDP scoring.

On the edge, Haason Reddick (54) is currently their best player – which is weird. Devon Kennard (61) is the other main name, although they’re still running a lot of interior linemen over the tackle. A whopping six different interior players played 30 or more snaps this week.

Rookie LB Isaiah Simmons hit multiple tackles for the first time since week one. He still played just 21 snaps, so his breakout is not close. Jordan Hicks (86) and De’Vondre Campbell (72) both had fine days.

Atlanta Falcons – 56 snaps

With Dan Quinn gone, the Falcons did not change much under Raheem Morris, unsurprisingly.

Deion Jones (54) and Foye Oluokun (56) are both good starting linebackers. They had fine days even on a low-snap week.

DE Allen Bailey (29) managed a sack, but you don’t want to be starting any Falcons DE if you can help it – maybe Dante Fowler (45).

Carolina Panthers – 66 snaps

Safety Juston Burris (43) suffered an injury and was carted off. Hopefully, he won’t miss time. In his absence, corners Corn Elder (28) and Troy Pride (27) played more. Starting corner Donte Jackson (33) appeared to get hurt too.

Edge Brian Burns (57) had a high-snap game. He’s playing more than expected. If he could return more sacks from his decent pressure numbers, he’d be a good IDP starter.

With DT Kawann Short out for the season (he’s droppable), Zach Kerr (38) ramped up his playing time.

Chicago Bears – 68 snaps

LB Danny Trevathan (58) remains a limited-snap player. But he’s still 31st in LB snaps so feel free to start him. The fact his partner Roquan Smith (68) is third in LB snaps shows us what Trevathan could be doing.

On the edge James Vaughters (33) again out-snapped Robert Quinn (30). Quinn is basically a specialist pass rusher at this point. That’s all he does. Vaughters is better against the run and more well-rounded so their playing time will vary with game-script.

Dallas Cowboys – 62 snaps

The headline here was LB Leighton Vander Esch returning to the team after four games out. He managed 32 snaps. Expect more next week. Fellow LB Joe Thomas (22) obviously saw his playing time curtailed. It was fun while it lasted.

DT Trysten Hill missed this game which led to Justin Hamilton (19) coming in.

Detroit Lions – 64 snaps

Jamie Collins (59) remains the only Lions LB to start with confidence. Jahlani Tavai (24) has fallen out of favor, Reggie Ragland (37) is an inefficient pass rusher/run-stuffer. Jarrad Davis (11) has also fallen out of favor.

On the edge, Trey Flowers (46) is still a good player but a tough IDP to start. Rookie Julian Okwara (5) continues to get very limited action.

Green Bay Packers – 65 snaps

The Packers are dead last in pressure in the 2020 NFL. Last.

Edge Preston Smith (43) has managed just seven pressures (with one sack). After five games in 2019, he was on 24. Za’Darius Smith (49) has 13 so far (he’s converted five into sacks). At the same stage of last year he was on 30.

Krys Barnes (57) is manning the sole LB spot with Christian Kirksey out injured. He’s a fine option and will be as long as he keeps the job.

Los Angeles Rams – 73 snaps

The Rams are fascinating. They’re a very good pass-rushing team – but that basically comes solely from Aaron Donald (63) while Leonard Floyd (68) is enormously and characteristically ineffective on the edge.

Justin Hollins (35) was the second edge rusher this week ahead of Samson Ebukam (21), Terrell Lewis and Jachai Polite (both 9).

Donald managed three pressures – none of the edge rushers managed a single one.

Minnesota Vikings – 80 snaps

A handful of Vikings defenders racked up high tackle numbers because of the high snap count.

Eric Kendricks and Eric Wilson (both 80) continue to both be excellent LB options. Todd Davis played 30 snaps to round out the unit. Remember Mike Zimmer is leading the league in three-LB snaps this season.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints enjoyed their bye week.

New York Giants – 73 snaps

This Giants defense is weird. They are down to bare bones on the edge. Kyler Fackrell played all 73 snaps which was expected. But fellow “starter” Markus Golden saw just 24 snaps. There did not appear to be an injury.

The Giants leaned heavily on a lopsided front with Leonard Williams (61) playing outside the tackle than he has recently.

Blake Martinez (67) played as much as we expect at LB, but Tae Crowder (62) played almost all the game next to him. He was terrible in real-life terms but had a big IDP day which will get people excited. He’s worth a gamble if you have roster space but do not drop any good asset for him.

David Mayo (11) made his season debut behind them.

Defensive back Darnay Holmes (3) was hurt early which meant Logan Ryan (73) moved into the slot. His position the last couple of seasons. Predictably he played poorly there.

Philadelphia Eagles – 57 snaps

The Eagles played the Ravens which led to some schematic changes.

They’ve played a lot of single-LB this season but against a run-heavy offense Nate Gerry (68) was joined by Alex Singleton (65) for most of the game. Shaun Bradley (32) and Davion Taylor (11) also played more than they have. These were Taylor’s first defensive snaps.

On top of this, safety Will Parks (39) made his debut for the team too.

All of this was achieved by limiting cornerback snaps. Darius Slay (73) played the whole game with Nickell Robey-Coleman (62) playing outside across from him. Cre’Von LeBlanc (23) was the third corner with Jalen Mills (62) moving back to safety.

It’s confusing writing about this – no wonder the Ravens seemed so out of sorts.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks enjoyed their bye week.

San Francisco 49ers – 60 snaps

The 49ers were desperate for some injury luck – and they got it. Emmanuel Moseley (60) returned after injury. Brian Allen did not see the field after his disaster a week ago. Jason Verrett (60) and Jamar Taylor (45) rounded out the unit.

LB Kwon Alexander missed this game, so Dre Greenlaw (60) stepped up to play next to Fred Warner (60).

Safety Jaquiski Tartt (32) appeared to take a knock which meant Marcell Harris (28) came in to play for him.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 63 snaps

The most consistent defense in the league suffered a blow with DT Vita Vea out for the season. In his absence, Rakeem Nunez-Roches (36) played extra snaps and Jeremiah Ledbetter (24) made his first appearance this season. He’s a nose tackle and should not be on your radar.

Cornerback Jamel Dean (45) is a stud and should be a full-time player.

Washington Football Team – 48 snaps

It’s been a tough 2020 for Washington, but Montez Sweat (38) and Chase Young (44) are going to be fixtures on this team for the next few years. They’ve racked up 32 pressures between them so far in just 250 pass-rush snaps. Ryan Kerrigan (8) is already an afterthought.

LB Cole Holcomb (31) lit up the stat sheet this week but played behind Jon Bostic (48). Kevin Pierre-Louis (34) remains an LB who is almost good enough to start as your LB4 – but not quite. Thomas Davis did not play this week. Starting any of them apart from Bostic is a poor decision right now.

Troy Apke missed the game at safety which meant DeShazor Everett (46) played next to Landon Collins (48). Given the conservative Giants offense, Kamren Curl played just two snaps.

Thanks for reading and good luck with waivers.
