AFC IDP Snap Counts: Week Six

Tom Kislingbury

This week was a bit of a wasteland in many ways for IDP owners. A lot of big names went missing and there were relatively few superstar performances.

But still – in 2020 we win IDP leagues by focus and persistence. So there are bargains to be found…

READ: NFC IDP Snap Counts: Week Six

Baltimore Ravens – 56 snaps

Interior linemen Derek Wolfe and Brandon Williams both missed the game. Justin Ellis (33) and Broderick Washington (20) both returned though so the net effect was minimal.

The secondary has settled down notably. Marlon Humphrey (72) is in the slot, with Marcus Peters (72) and Jimmy Smith (64) mostly playing outside.

LB Patrick Queen (63) played his highest snap count so far – but had a poor fantasy day. This stuff happens all the time. No need to wonder “what’s wrong” with him.

Buffalo Bills – 73 snaps

Star corner Tre’Davious White returned to play all 73 snaps. Cameron Lewis (10) sat in his place.

LB Matt Milano missed his third game of the season, so Tyrel Dodson was set to play. However, Dodson picked up a hamstring injury and was limited to just ten special teams snaps. AJ Klein (64) ended up playing instead and had a good night, which helped precisely nobody.

Cincinnati Bengals – 63 snaps

DE Sam Hubbard missed this game, so Carl Lawson (43) led the team in edge snaps. What was odd was that Carlos Dunlap played just 28 snaps. He really has a diminished role right now. Khalid Kareem (25) was the number three DE with Amani Bledsoe (29) spending some time out there too.

LB is a four-way muddle. Josh Bynes and Germaine Pratt (37) led the way but Logan Wilson (33) and Akeem Davis-Gaither (27) were just behind. None of them should be starting for you.

DT Geno Atkins (19) played under 20 snaps for the second straight week. His IDP time might be over.

Cleveland Browns – 65 snaps

With Karl Joseph and Ronnie Harrison both out, Sheldrick Redwine (64) played safety next to Andrew Sendejo (65).

BJ Goodson (57) is the LB to own – even if he’s not a great starting option.

Olivier Vernon (55) is clearly the best DE option aside from Myles Garrett (50). DT Larry Ogunjobi (55) returned after a week out. Vincent Taylor did not play

Denver Broncos – 57 snaps

The Broncos seem to have a relatively settled defense right now. Malik Reed (49) is playing opposite Bradley Chubb (48) with Anthony Chickillo (13) way back.

DeShawn Williams (36) has replaced Jurrell Casey on the interior.

Alexander Johnson (57) and Josey Jewell (49) have the LB spots sewn up – but Derrek Tuszka (4) has started to see a few snaps.

Houston Texans – 75 snaps

Tyrell Adams (57) stepped in again with Benardrick McKinney out for the season and had a big game. He’s played 124 snaps out of 150 over the past two weeks. You should grab him if possible – although you should also not expect him to be a top 24 LB.

The reason Adams is not playing every snap is that the Texans are experimenting with running just one LB and an extra safety in some packages. Justin Reid and Eric Murray (both 75) are the top safeties – but Michael Thomas (18) is seeing some playing time.

Indianapolis Colts – 73 snaps

The Colts played just 168 defensive snaps in their first three games. In their last three, they’ve played 208 – a significant difference.

LBs Bobby Okereke and Anthony Walker (both 73) remain every-down players with Darius Leonard still out.

DeForest Buckner (58) is fourth among DTs this season in playing time. His motor is elite.

Jacksonville Jaguars – 77 snaps

Star DE Josh Allen missed this game, which just highlighted the mess at the position the Jags are rolling out. Dawuane Smoot (64) and K’Lavon Chaisson (55) led the way in snaps. They created four pressures from a combined 58 pass-rush attempts. Chaisson played LB for a handful of snaps in this game.

New signings Kamalei Correa (33) and Jabaal Sheard (15) both made team debuts. Which shows you how desperate they are.

LB Myles Jack returned but managed just 58 snaps. Quincy Williams (13) made his first appearance of the year. He’s still terrible. Joe Schobert (77) played every snap.

Safety continues to be a mess. Josh Jones (77) played every snap with Jarrod Wilson (51) and Brandon Watson (29) seeing action too. Andrew Wingard is on IR.

Kansas City Chiefs – 53 snaps

LB Willie Gay dropped right back to just two snaps again this week. Sigh.

All three of the Chiefs’ top safeties played every snap: Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill and Daniel Sorensen.

Tanoh Kpassagnon (38) continues to get solid playing time on the edge but do very little with it. He’s been a huge disappointment.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders enjoyed their bye week.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers enjoyed their bye week.

Miami Dolphins – 69 snaps

The Dolphins had it easy strangling the Jets a week after they mugged the 49ers.

Kyle Van Noy missed the game and Andrew van Ginkel (17) picked up a new knock, which means Sam Eguavoen (49) played more than normal. The Dolphins flexible front means that they can adapt well to edge injuries. They simply played more even fronts with Shaq Lawson (43) and Emmanuel Ogbah (53) picking up the snaps.

With Davon Godchaux on IR, rookie Raekwon Davis (26) picked up the slack. He’s likely to play a higher percentage of snaps at nose tackle which frees Christian Wilkins (46) to play a little wider. He had a sack this week and he’ll likely have some more.

New England Patriots – 64 snaps

Ja’Whaun Bentley (61) finally had a big game. It’s great to see and he’s clearly the LB to own in New England, but he’s hard to trust. The Pats scheme and defensive volume are just not conducive to big ID LB scoring.

Similarly, Adrian Phillips (51) at safety. He scored well this week as he did back in week one. But he had three poor games in the middle. He’s a top 48 safety for sure. But not really a good choice for top 24 in any given week.

Edge Chase Winovich (22) struggled to get on the field this week. He’s still a situational pass-rusher at heart.

New York Jets – 56 snaps

The Jets had been averaging 72 snaps per game before this week. The drop in volume was a scoring factor as you’d expect.

Avery Williamson (53) is firmly installed next to Neville Hewitt (56) at LB. This was what we expected to see preseason. It’s just taken a while to get here.

Bless Austin (38) returned at cornerback but he is still sharing a role with Lamar Jackson (18).

Pittsburgh Steelers – 57 snaps

Young LB Devin Bush (27) sadly picked up a nasty injury and will be out for the season. His replacement was Robert Spillane (30) who becomes a hot waiver target this week. Vince Williams (46) just does not have the capability to do what Bush does on the field.

Tennessee Titans – 72 snaps

LB Jayon Brown (69) is struggling this season. He’s played 333 of 342 snaps this season. His time will come.

Vic Beasley played just 11 snaps on the edge. His career as a relevant IDP in non-bestball leagues seems pretty much over. Harold Landry (63) and Jadeveon Clowney (54) are the top dogs.

Interior lineman Jeffery Simmons (56) returned from injury. He managed a sack and seemed back to full health.

Good luck everyone!
