IDP Snap Counts: Week Eight

Tom Kislingbury

Another week is in the books. And no doubt you smashed your opponent in every matchup with your fearsome defense. Didn’t you?

Arizona Cardinals

LB Haason Reddick took a bump this week and played just half the game (36). Joe Walker (40) stepped in and is one to watch should Reddick miss more time.

At free safety we’re back to a shared job. Jalen Thompson (43) was back after barely playing a week ago. Deionte Thompson (33) lost out.

Atlanta Falcons

Just like 2018, the strong safety position is frustrating in Atlanta. This week Ricardo Allen (61) played the spot with Kemal Ishmael seeing just 18 snaps. Damontae Kazee (48) moved to free safety with Blidi Wreh-Wilson (57) and Kendall Sheffield (50) both spending some time in the slot.

There are just too many ways to get this wrong on a weekly basis so avoid it if you can.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens enjoyed a bye week.

Buffalo Bills

LB Matt Milano (73) returned this week to play every snap alongside Tremaine Edmunds (73). Lorenzo Alexander (31) went back to his Sam role.

Carolina Panthers

Star CB Donte Jackson (48) returned after his injury. He managed just two tackles.

OLB Brian Burns played just 22 snaps. Some observers suggested there was something wrong with him. If they’d been reading this column, they’d know he’s been used much less since Bruce Irvin (43) got healthy.

Chicago Bears

The Bears played just 45 defensive snaps this week against the Chargers.

Khalil Mack (43) was joined by Leonard Floyd (42) as a full-time edge player. Floyd has not recorded a sack for over 50 days now.

Cincinnati Bengals

Corner continues to be a mess. William Jackson (59) returned but Darqueze Dennard missed out again.

DE Carlos Dunlap (39) returned after missing two games. Sam Hubbard played 50 snaps and Andrew Brown just 28. Carl Lawson remains out.

The LB situation remains the same. Nick Vigil (62) is a full-time player. Preston Brown (30) plays significantly less. And Germaine Pratt (16) the fewest.

Cleveland Browns

Denzel Ward (68) and Greedy Williams (67) finally returned at corner! It wasn’t nearly enough, though, as the Patriots never looked troubled.

Damarious Randall was out this week leaving Morgan Burnett (69) and Jermaine Whitehead (68) to play safety. Both played deep and in the box in a more fluid split than the Browns have been employing so far this season.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys rested up on their bye week.

Denver Broncos

Alexander Johnson (58) snuck closer to being a full-time LB this week. Todd Davis saw just 52 snaps. Johnson looks the better player. It seems might have the chance to usurp the top role here. Caution has been advised so far in this column, but if he’s still available you should pick him up.

Detroit Lions

Darius Slay missed the game. Rumors abound that he could be traded this week. (Eds. note: He’s staying in Detroit for now.) Mike Ford (45) picked up playing time in his absence.

Lineman Da’Shawn Hand (40) made his first appearance of the season. He played 90% of his snaps at DT.

After last week’s weird LB usage, we saw a slightly more usual split. Jarrad Davis (66) remains the top option. Devon Kennard (64) played on the edge mostly as per usual in his Sam role. Christian Jones (49) and Jahlani Tavai (36) were a bit more versatile.

Quandre Diggs was traded away last week which left a safety opening. Then Tracy Walker (42) hurt himself which opened more space. As a result, Will Harris and Tavon Wilson (both 61) become interesting. Wilson is the natural box safety while the Lions have used Harris fairly deep.

Green Bay Packers

B.J. Goodson played just three snaps this week as he continues his disappointing career. Unfortunately, Oren Burks didn’t even play defense. Instead safeties Adrian Amos (59) and Darnell Savage (59) both spent time in the box with Chandon Sullivan (35) mostly playing deep.

Houston Texans

Newly acquired corner Gareon Conley (55) played on his debut. Lonnie Johnson (33) was the other starter but he was injured in the game (concussion) leaving Keion Crossen (23) and Cornell Armstrong (11) to play more.

J.J. Watt (29) was also hurt and will miss significant time. You can’t replace Watt, but Carlos Watkins (18) and Charles Omenihu (22) both received a boost in playing time.

Indianapolis Colts

Another change at corner. Kenny Moore (71) stepped up with Pierre Desir missing this week.

Jabaal Sheard (55) is well and truly locked in as the starter opposite Justin Houston (50). Ben Banogu (36) did play some and managed a clean-up sack at the end of the game.

LB Anthony Walker (56) has now averaged 45 snaps to the 60 of Darius Leonard (73) since Leonard returned to health.

Safety Malik Hooker (62) played for the first time since week three. George Odum (35), Clayton Geathers (44) and Khari Willis (22) all played too.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Myles Jack (61) was joined by Austin Calitro (50) this week at LB. Calitro clocked up five solos. You may remember him playing ok in Seattle last season.

On the edge Yannick Ngakoue (46), Calais Campbell (51) and Josh Allen (28) recorded five and half sacks between them against the awful Jets. Dawuane Smoot (25) also got to the QB – he was playing because this game was a fairly easy win though.

Sacksonville?

Kansas City Chiefs

Disappointing DE Frank Clark missed this game leaving Emmanuel Ogbah (62), Alex Okafor (35) and Tanoh Kpassagnon (51) to play. Kpassagnon made the biggest impact with two sacks. Maybe he’s finally ready to fulfill some of that potential, although this week represented 40% of his career sacks.

At LB Anthony Hitchens (56) and Damien Wilson (57) were again the starting LBs. Ben Niemann (13) lost snaps but amazingly Reggie Ragland (33) added some playing time.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers played 82 snaps this week – comfortably their highest total of the season.

Melvin Ingram actually played all 82 on his return from injury. Joey Bosa was only given 72 in comparison.

LB remains a mess. Thomas Davis (68) led the way but no one else played 45.

Los Angeles Rams

Jalen Ramsey (83) played every snap for the first time in a Rams uniform.

The team again used predominantly three-safety personnel. Eric Weddle and Taylor Rapp played every snap with Marqui Christian on 62.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins ran more odd fronts against the Steelers than they have been using so far this season. This changed their personnel use a little.

Vince Biegel (65) played as an orthodox OLB which led to more snaps. He’d averaged just 21 snaps a game before this week. He’s been the Dolphins’ best pass rusher (which isn’t saying much).

Charles Harris (26) and Taco Charlton (30) conversely lost playing time. They’d averaged 45 and 47 snaps respectively up until now.

Sam Eguavoen (61) also played more on the edge last night. He’d been losing snaps steadily, but Monday night saw him with a heavy workload.

That means that Jerome Baker (77) and Raekwon McMillan (50) continued to play as more orthodox inside LBs.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings played just 43 defensive snaps. Washington simply could not sustain drives. This game should not be given much credence as an indicator going forwards.

New England Patriots

Safety Patrick Chung (58) returned from injury which meant Duron Harmon (45) dropped down to his normal levels of snaps.

Chase Winovich (18) again got to the QB as did many other Patriots but none of the DEs played more than 25 snaps.

New Orleans Saints

Marcus Davenport was restricted to just 26 snaps in this game (out of 49) which explains his quiet game.

A.J. Klein (39) continues to play limited snaps with Kiko Alonso (20 ) even more limited.

New York Jets

Megabucks LB CJ Mosley missed this game too and will apparently miss most of the rest of the season. He’s been an enormous disappointment to IDP owners, as well as the Jets.

Blake Cashman (74) was partnered by James Burgess (73) this week.

Leonard Williams (46) played his last game as a Jet before being traded away to the Giants in a bizarre trade. Rookie Quinnen Williams (46) will really have to step up now.

CB Trumaine Johnson (13) was limited with Nate Hairston (61) stepping in for him.

New York Giants

On their D-line B.J. Hill (20), Dalvin Tomlinson (31) and Dexter Lawrence (42) continue to take major snaps supported by Olsen Pierre (16). It’ll be interesting to see how this changes with Leonard Williams on board.

Alec Ogletree (65) was the only full-time LB with David Mayo (30) playing under half the snaps.

Oakland Raiders

With Gareon Conley traded away Trayvon Mullen (62) became a starting cornerback.

At DE Maxx Crosby has won himself a job. He played 74 snaps this week. His play has been up and down but there have certainly been some ups.

Philadelphia Eagles

CB Rasul Douglas was limited to just six snaps as Ronald Darby (57) and Sidney Jones (45) returned to health.

Nate Gerry (62) continues to fill in as the top LB with Nigel Bradham missing. Kamu Grugier-Hill (39) remains a part-time player even in dire need.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Steven Nelson (60) was back at CB after Artie Burns filled in for him in the Steelers’ last game. Artie Burns did not play defense this week.

Mark Barron (40) and Vince Williams (34) continue to play part-time roles. Neither are very startable right now with just Devin Bush (60) viable.

Seattle Seahawks

CB Tre Flowers missed the game with Akeem King (68) promoted in his place.

Ziggy Ansah (39) returned after missing a game. Quinton Jefferson missed this one instead. Rasheem Green (42), Branden Jackson (37) and Jadeveon Clowney (62) all had a role.

Safety Marquise Blair (69) continued to play with Bradley McDougald (11) limited again.

San Francisco 49ers

This defense is very settled and effective. After crippling injuries the last two years it’s nice to see the 49ers get some luck there.

Nick Bosa (42) had an epic game from limited snaps with Arik Armstead (38), Dee Ford (21), Ronald Blair (36) and Solomon Thomas (32) all getting action too.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

DE Jason Pierre-Paul made his first appearance of the season. He played 43 snaps opposite Shaq Barrett (38).

Tennessee Titans

CB Adoree’ Jackson missed this game. It was the first game of his career he’s missed. It was weird not to see him being peppered with targets as usual.

LeShaun Sims (68) played instead.

Jayon Brown (80) returned at LB next to Rashaan Evans (69). Wesley Woodyard (11) played a minor role again.

Washington Redskins

LB Jon Bostic (67) remains the best option here. Cole Holcomb (49) and Shaun Dion Hamilton (23) just aren’t playing enough.

Safety Montae Nicholson missed this game entirely leaving Troy Apke to play 72 snaps.

Thanks for reading and good luck next week.
