If there is one thing that IDP enthusiasts can’t get enough of, it’s mock drafts. The actual NFL Draft usually isn’t even over yet and my Twitter is blowing up asking when we’re going to have a mock and if the offensive players are going to be included. Well, I’m happy to say that the DLF IDP team held not one, but two mock drafts last weekend.

This article will walk you through both six-round drafts, comparing and contrasting them, plus I’ll through in my pair of pennies about what I thought was a good pick (Spoilers: all mine were brilliant), and some that made me raise my eyebrows.

Mock Draft 1, Round 1

So, no surprised among the top three, at least in my mind. In fact the top nine from both drafts are pretty much the same, just in a different order, which isn’t surprising from what I’ve seen and read. The curveball really comes in the second mock at Pick 11 when @DynastyHook broke the seal on linebackers, taking Tremaine Edmunds.

Now, I personally have Roquan Smith as my LB1, but I have no problem at all with taking Edmunds first if he’s your dude. Pick 1.11 is a little early for my IDP drafting tastes, but fellow DLF IDP guru Bee Salamat is a big believer in pulling the trigger early for the players you want, so I’m not going to squawk too loudly.

I was picking out of the ninth spot and took Anthony Miller in both places. Yes, it was a homer pick. No, I don’t care.

I’ll be honest, I thought more IDPs would go in Round 2 and I sure as heck didn’t expect to see that many quarterbacks go, so I learned a little something about value here. The only misstep was probably Bradley Chubb, who is going to be saddled with the LB tag, thus diminishing his IDP value as a pass rusher. This mock was set up as a snake draft, so I had the No. 4 selections here and took wide receivers that I thought had clear Year 1 roles.

Switching back to the No. 9 spot, I took Fred Warner in both mocks. I see him stepping in next to Reuben Foster and playing from Day 1 and if Foster does something else stupid, well that’s even better for Warner. There has been much discussion in the recent days about Equanimeous St. Brown and his ADP, with most folks on Twitter saying he is being over-drafted. I have come around to this line of thinking and personally wouldn’t take St. Brown before the mid-fourth round.

I was surprised to see Derwin James go in this round in both mocks. Normally safeties don’t start coming off the board until the fourth round, which tells me that there is a clear tier break after the first four linebackers and that people think James is special. Keep that in mind during your draft.

This is the round where you begin to gamble and where you can win a league if you get lucky. As you can see, the pass rush specialists start coming off the board with more frequency here, while the offensive players are generally high upside plays but might not have a solidified role early on.

Truth be told, I should have taken Vita Rea in both mocks, instead of snagging Josey Jewell in Mock 1. I was trying to follow my big board rankings, but getting DT1 in the fifth round was probably the better choice.

Jerome Baker went in this round in both mocks and I know that he has his supporters, but barring injury, I don’t know if I see him with a ton of snaps Year 1.

Only one cornerback came off the board in either mock and that was Denzel Ward at the 6.03, which is probably fine to throw that dart, but I would have chosen one of the other corners. Bee Salamat took Micah Kiser and he said Kiser could compete for a spot right away. Tom Kislingbury likes Rasheem Green (no relation) as a late-round flyer.
