Five in Five: Week Three Dynasty Storylines

Ken Kelly

Over the years, we’ve done several different weekly preview articles and love to give new things a try. This is the time of year when it’s nearly information overload with every nook and cranny of the internet flooded with all kinds of fantasy football opinions and advice. Instead of following the herd and doing the same thing you’re used to, we’re going a little off the wall this year with our “Five in Five.” This is a weekly written preview of the five biggest storylines of the week encompassed in a five-section theme and in the way I love to do it – weird. It will also be a bit of a preview for my weekly Dynasty Aftermath – the longest running dynasty series in the business as we hit year #17 in 2023 as we bring you five possible storylines we could see on Monday Morning.

Elementary, My Dear Watson?

The Deshaun Watson era in Cleveland has simply not gone to plan. Through his first eight games with the Browns, Watson has now thrown for just under 1,500 yards, with just nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. The sample size is still pretty small but the Browns gave up a lot to get him, then gave him enough guaranteed money to ensure he could buy a small country if he so chooses. Is Watson simply an elementary-level quarterback now? Where has the dominant player we saw in Houston gone? With Nick Chubb out for the season, it’s go-time for Watson and he needs to be better in a hurry or this marriage with the Browns could go down as the biggest disaster in the history of football contracts. The Browns play Tennessee at him in a game that looks pretty significant already. Any dynasty owner with Watson as their QB1 is starting to sweat. Will that change this week?

Mad Dog Mattison

The Vikings have gotten off to a terrible start and Alexander Mattison has sadly been a big part of that. With just 62 yards on 19 carries and six total catches through two games, he’s been one of the biggest busts in dynasty leagues this year as the replacement for Dalvin Cook. With Minnesota taking a shot on Cam Akers, the writing could be on the wall for Mattison. A game against the Chargers is on tap and it looks like Minnesota will hold Akers out this week. A dominant performance from Mattison could hold Akers off for the moment but if the Vikings continue to go as pass heavy as they have thus far, this is going to be a serious dynasty mess.

Mac and Jeez

The Patriots are looking really ordinary and Mac Jones is on notice. The Jets are on the schedule this week and they obviously have a formidable defense. However, if New England drops to 0-3, is Jones going to start feeling some heat? Dynasty managers in Superflex leagues are likely already thinking ahead to the possibility of adding Bailey Zappe and Jones needs to be better quickly. Jones has been very average throughout his three seasons and patience is likely starting to get pretty thin here.

Tank you very Much

The Texans re-shaped their offense this off-season and have now possibly found a pretty dynamic duo in the form of Nico Collins and Tank Dell. After seven catches on ten targets last week, Dell is climbing up the rookie rankings quickly. Can he keep this momentum going and establish himself as a bona fide weapon in dynasty leagues? With Puka Nacua already looking like the steal of the century, could Dell be the second late round receiver to emerge in dynasty leagues and give teams a serious (and unexpected) boost? This week is big as Houston takes on Jacksonville.

Who’s the Moss?

When Jonathan Taylor on IR with a strained contract, the Colts were expected to turn to some kind of running back committee while they explore trade opportunities. While that worked the first week, Zack Moss returned last week and immediately (and surprisingly) took over the unquestioned bell cow of the offense last week. After 22 touches and playing nearly 100% of the snaps last week, dynasty managers are eagerly anticipating what he may have in store for us today. If the Colts do indeed move Taylor (or if he chooses to sit), Moss could be a huge factor in dynasty leagues this year and possibly moving forward. Was last week a flash in the pan or is he the real deal with the Colts for at least the next couple of weeks?
