The Dynasty Aftermath: Before the WWE, there was the WWF, Part Two

Ken Kelly

Welcome to DLF’s Dynasty Aftermath. This staple article is our longest running signature piece as we have a little fun after a tough week at the Dynasty League Football office. You’ll find this article will review the week’s happenings in a variety of ways and help set you up for the coming weeks as we spin around the league in the way we know best. Expect it each and every week.

I’ve written this column for over a decade and I always forget how much I truly enjoy it. I love combing through the stats of the week, putting together ridiculous lineups, finding waiver wire gems, picking MVPs/LVPs and discussing things to worry about.

That’s not all.

I also really love sharing little bits of my life with the community of DLF and picking a theme for this column each week. This year, I’m going off the rails a bit. I’m not just exclusively choosing movies or TV shows and sticking with them.  I’m simply picking something relevant, wacky or whatever may come into my mind each given week. My hope is each week will at least be interesting in some way and hopefully make you laugh a few times along the way.

It’s time to get back to our multi-part aftermath theme known as the WWF/WWE.  When I was growing up, I loved to wake up on Saturday mornings and watch WWF wrestling in the form of Wrestling Superstars. I’m going to take one of my favorite WWF matches and draw a lesson about fantasy football from it. If you missed the first installment, just check it out here.

I once heard a story about Andre the Giant. He was the seven footer from Grenoble in the French Alps who went undefeated for more than fifteen years. Apparently a bunch of wrestlers went to a bar one night (sorry to spoil it, but they’re actually all friends) and challenged Andre to a drinking contest. After fifteen beers, Andre was declared the champion and walked back to the hotel.  You may think that isn’t that impressive…however, that was after fifteen pitchers, not glasses.  Yep, Andre downed fifteen pitchers of beer, then walked home and went to bed, completely fine.  Unbelievable.

Andre was an enormous human being and his match at Wrestlemania 3 against Hulk Hogan is still one of the biggest matches in history. The winning streak was over and Hulkamania reigned in front of over 93,000 fans after Hogan bodyslammed the 500 pound Giant.

The lesson from this match is simple – even the mighty end up falling. While it may seem like your team has no hope this season, true dynasty owners know they’re always just one lucky break away. Don’t believe me? Find anyone with Patrick Mahomes on their roster and ask them just how they like that second or third round rookie pick now. No dynasty lasts forever and you have to keep plugging away.

Week Eleven Fantasy MVP

Remember when there were concerns that Tyreek Hill was just a gadget player? Well, those have been squarely suplexed from the top rope and eliminated. Hill was amazing this week with ten catches for 215 yards and two scores against the Rams. Hill has become a truly elite option in dynasty leagues and is carrying some teams on a near weekly basis.

Week Eleven Fantasy LVP

Zach Ertz has posted 16 catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns over the past two weeks. Unfortunately, 14 of those catches, 145 of those yards and both of those scores came last week after Ertz laid an egg with two catches and 15 scoreless yards this week. The entire Eagles team was boatraced this week and the only comfort owners can take is the likelihood this will be his worst game of the year.

Lineup Fun

We’re adding something fun again this week. Our own Ryan McDowell had a great suggestion this year. If you fielded any of the lineups below, let us know and you’ll get a free three months of DLF Premium. We just need the league ID and a screenshot to verify and you’re off an running.  The first three to respond would win!

Gut Checks

I’d be worried if I owned Dalvin Cook. This looks like a lost year.

I’d be worried if I was relying on Kyle Rudolph.

I’d be worried if I owned Ryan Fitzpatrick. The magic looks to be on hold once again.

I’d be worried if I owned Joe Flacco. Lamar Jackson did enough to give the Ravens something to think about.

I’d be worried if I owned Alex Collins. Uhh…

I’d be worried if I was expecting consistency from Dion Lewis or any Tennessee player.

I’d be worried if I owned OJ Howard. Injuries stink.

I’d be worried if I owned Cameron Meredith.

I’d be worried if I was still banking on the breakout from Ricky Seals-Jones.

I’d be worried if I was ignoring the consistency from Philip Rivers.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t at least mildly intrigued by what the Raiders may do with Jalen Richard.

I’d be worried if I was banking on points from Tyrell Williams.

I’d be worried if I was still holding out hope for Laquon Treadwell.

I’d be worried if I was ignoring the production from Josh Adams.

I’d be worried if I didn’t notice what DJ Moore did this week.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t trying to get Derrius Guice on the cheap.

I’d be worried if I was counting on Golden Tate the rest of the season.

Ditto for Demaryius Thomas. Those trades look big on paper but haven’t really worked yet.

Free Agent Find of the Week

Here’s the deal. I feel like this section of the aftermath has become a little redundant. We already post a waiver wire article each week to prep you for your weekly FAAB run or to burn your waiver priority. It’s feeling a little like double dipping since many of the same names could easily mentioned. Instead of doing that in the future, I’m going to add a name or two of players who are likely free agents in your league who you really wouldn’t even need to use your FAAB bid bucks. These are going to be deep dive players here and most are names to simply keep an eye on unless you have an open roster spot or two.

Marcell Ateman, WR OAK

The Raiders are running out of warm bodies at the position and Ateman posted four catches for 50 yards this week. What may be lost in those numbers is the fact he was looking like Derek Carr‘s go-to option down the stretch. Ateman will likely flame out, but he’s worth watching at the very least.

Previous suggestions: Jonnu Smith, Ian Thomas, Will Dissly, Geronimo Allison, Phillip Dorsett, Phillip Lindsay, Brandon Marshall, Austin Carr, Shaun Wilson, Jakeem Grant, Corey Grant, Tyler Boyd, Taywan Taylor, Mark Walton. CJ Beathard, Rhett Ellison, Wendell Smallwood, Jeremy McNichols, Robert Turbin, David Moore, Jamaal Charles, Josh Adams, Niles Paul, Roc Thomas, Chad Kelly, Damion Ratley, Raheem Mostert, Derek Anderson, Kyle Lauletta, Maurice Harris, Trenton Cannon, Rishard Matthews,  Trenton Cannon, Rishard Matthews, Brandon Powell, Logan Thomas, Mo-Alie Cox
