The Dynasty Aftermath: Death of Comic Sans

Ken Kelly

Those of you who have been around these parts for any amount of time likely know of my weekly regular season column called The Dynasty Aftermath. Within that article, I typically talk about crazy lineups, have some fun with numbers, name an MVP or LVP for the week and make some general comments. My favorite section is entitled, “Gut Checks,” where I list the things I’m most worried about. With preseason games underway and the season quickly approaching, I thought it would be fun to check in each week of the preseason and provide some preseason gut checks. One of the things I’m also typically known for is coming up with some kind of whacky or weird theme each week, so let’s continue with week two.

I recently took a job as a High School Marketing and Business Teacher. I had spent nearly 30 years at a financial institution and was ready for a change in my life. I thought bankruptcy sounded like a good time, so off I went. One of the first things I’ve noticed is both awkward and infuriating – the overuse of the Comic Sans Font in the education field.  If that takes you to a place of confusion, let me clarify a few things.

1.) It’s never OK to use that font.
2.) Yes. I said never.
3.) I’m really not wrong. I don’t care what field you’re in.

My hatred for this font is equalled only by a graphic designer I know who once went on vacation, found a fancy restaurant to go to for an anniversary dinner, then REFUSED to enter when he saw the font choice on the door. Yes, that’s a true story.

After multiple presentations, handouts and visuals, I’ve had my fill. However, it got me thinking. What do we as dynasty owners do or use over and over again and fail to change with the times. As I stared through page after page of information in Comic Sans, I realized it – we don’t learn from the past very well.

My advice this week is pretty simple as we approach yet another fantasy season – learn what you’ve done wrong before and fix it. I know I personally tend to overvalue aging wide receivers and I’ve made a point to avoid them in my leagues this season. What will you do this year? Are you too impulsive with trades? Do you get impatient and cut players too soon? Whatever it is, recognize it now before it’s too late and your season does the following:

With that in mind, let’s run down some things I’m concerned about heading into preseason week three.

Week Three Gut Checks

I’d be worried if I had forgotten about Trey Sermon.

I’d be worried if I was ignoring the battle for the Browns RB2. It’s significant.

I’d be worried if I was dismissing Sam Howell.

I’d be worried if I ever thought Comic Sans was OK. Ever.

I’d be worried if I had held on to Corey Davis. Boy, what could have been.

I’d be worried if I had any fringe starting running back with Jonathan Taylor on the market.

I’d be worried if I didn’t have Shi Smith on my deep watch list.

I’d be worried if I thought Tyler Allgeier was worthless. Nope.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t paying attention to Tank Bigsby.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t a little concerned about Dameon Pierce.

I’d be worried if I didn’t have Jaylen Warren if I had Najee Harris.

I’d be worried if I didn’t have Tyson Bagent on my deep radar or watch list.

I’d be worried if I thought I knew what would happen with the Colts should Taylor get moved.

I’d be worried if I invested a ton in Trey Lance.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t excited to see what was next from Rashee Rice.

I’d be worried if I needed something early from Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

I’d be worried if I thought I had the backup Minnesota running back job figured out.

I’d be worried if I thought Jordan Love was going to face plant.

I’d be worried if I had my wagon hitched to Russell Wilson.

I’d be worried if I was ignoring the line Ronnie Bell put up last week.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t watching the Cowboys running back depth chart very closely.

I’d be worried if I didn’t have Jake Bobo on my week three preseason watch list.

I’d be worried if I was still holding on to Bryan Edwards.

I’d be worried if I made it through this and was second guessing on if Comic Sans was ever OK.  It’s not. Have I made myself clear?

See you next week. Can’t wait for the extended editions of these coming soon!
