Dynasty Injury Report: Week Nine

Kyle Trimble

Reaching the halfway point of the NFL season, we are finding out who the contenders and pretenders are. Fantasy-wise, several players have shot out of a cannon and have taken the fantasy season by storm while normally dependable players never really seemed to get their act together. Add in the injuries and this makes for an ever-exciting fantasy football season.

My name is Kyle Trimble, I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy, the other half of the injury analyst team here at Dynasty League Football. We are here each and every week to break down the latest injuries and provide perspective on how to navigate the pitfalls that are injuries.

The weekly injury roundup will be posted on Wednesdays to discuss injuries that just occurred. I would also encourage you to tune in to the DLF YouTube channel (make sure to subscribe!) to tune in to helpful content throughout the week.

Let’s start with injury updates as we enter week ten of the season.

Daniel Jones, QB NYG

Injury: Right ACL tear

Return to Play: 2024

Jones suffered a right ACL tear on a scramble in the pocket early in the second quarter on Sunday. This injury comes on the heels of his neck injury that cost him three games prior. Jones will undergo surgery to reconstruct the ACL and look to return in 2024. The Giants have been a mess all year with injuries and now are relying on rookie Tommy Devito and journeyman Matt Barkley after Tyrod Taylor was placed on IR. Grab anyone you can off the waiver wire, Devito and Barkley are too risky.

Dallas Goedert, TE PHI

Injury: Right forearm fracture

Return to Play: Week 16-18

Goedert suffered a right forearm fracture when he was tackled out of bounds, landing with his full body weight on the arm. He underwent an MRI to assess the full extent of the damage and will likely be placed on injured reserve. It’s reasonable to expect that he will return in six to eight weeks, just in time for the playoffs. Teammate Jack Stoll should see an increase in targets especially with Grant Calcaterra out, but look elsewhere for more tight end production.

Cam Akers, RB MIN

Injury: Left Achilles tear

Return to Play: 2024

Akers tore his left Achilles in Sunday’s contest, just after tearing his right Achilles two years ago. This ends Akers’ season and severely affects his career prospects moving forward. He is scheduled to be a restricted free agent after the season but may be damaged goods at this point. Looking at replacements, Alexander Mattison is likely taken in your league which leaves Ty Chandler or Kene Nwangwu as last-minute options.

KJ Osborn, WR MIN

Injury: Concussion

Return to Play: Week 10-11

Osborn required the assistance of the cart to get to the locker room after a vicious hit in the second quarter Sunday. He was eventually ruled out with a concussion along with teammate Jaren Hall earlier that day. Osborn enters the concussion protocol and must be cleared by an independent neurologist before he can return to play. There is a small chance that he return in week ten, but more likely week 11. Brandon Powell may be worth a flier especially with an increase in targets.

Ja’Marr Chase, WR CIN

Injury: Back

Return to Play: Week 10

Chase fell hard to the turf several times in the week nine win over the Bills on Sunday, requiring treatment during the game and later deemed day-to-day on Monday. He is hoping to get healthy enough to play Sunday but stated that he was pretty sore moving around. While he may be feeling the effects of the injury in week ten, under no circumstances should Chase be benched in your league.

Jaylen Waddle, WR MIA

Injury: Left knee

Return to Play: Week 11

Waddle suffered a left knee injury on the second play of the game against the Kansas City Chiefs playing in Germany. He was initially questionable to return, he ultimately did though only securing three receptions for 42 yards. By video, the injury does not look like much and may just require maintenance. The Dolphins have a well-timed bye week and this should allow Waddle to get fully right, especially after working through oblique and back injuries earlier this year.

Treylon Burks, WR TEN

Injury: Concussion

Return to Play: Week 10

Burks briefly lost consciousness after a brutal hit in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He required the assistance of a cart to get off the field but was walking around an hour later in the locker room. He will still have to pass through the concussion protocol and with a few extra days due to the mini-bye, he has a legitimate shot to play Sunday. Should Burks not clear, check out Nick Westbrook-Ikhine as a last-minute option for a boom or bust potential.

Christian Watson, WR GB

Injury: Back, chest

Return to Play: Week 10

Watson underwent a concussion check on Sunday but was found to not have sustained one, a bullet dodged as he works through back and chest injuries. Head coach Matt LaFleur is optimistic in stating there aren’t any long-term concerns with his injuries. Watson’s status should be one to monitor this week but should be able to play come Sunday.
