Dynasty Fantasy Football Trading Post: JJ McCarthy

Rebuilding can be a daunting task. Patience is not a virtue I possess but is one that can be very beneficial to teams looking to punt this year to make that move the next. There are plenty of ways to take advantage of people like me who don’t have the cerebral fortitude to wait – offering to take rookies who we know aren’t going to start immediately, being willing to take injured players off my roster to let them heal on yours, and even being willing to let players mature on your bench who have been getting iffy reports out of training camp so I don’t need to sit and stew every time I see their name on my roster.

Today we will talk about someone who falls into all three of these categories (sort of). This highly drafted rookie was already not going to be starting this season and just tore his meniscus, and while there weren’t negative musings from training camp for him, there were very positive reports about the veteran starter ahead of him. Seeing as how there is only one person who matches these sets of circumstances, clearly we are talking about…

JJ McCarthy, QB MIN

McCarthy currently sits at QB19 and player 50 overall in August DLF superflex ADP. Even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of him as a prospect, it was hard to ignore the draft capital and landing spot for the young pass thrower, especially when coming out of rookie drafts as the QB4. This could be the perfect time to attack the Russes of the world and see if the manager in your league was expecting to start McCarthy at some point this season. Bitterness, disappointment, and impatience are very strong factors in getting a manager to trade a player away.

In the preseason action, we did get to see from the new Vikings quarterback, it looked like he was going to fit in whenever he was given the chance, especially since the Vikings’ pass catchers are a very talented group of players. Let’s take a look at the DLF Trade Finder and Trade Analyzer to see if there is anybody out there like me willing to trade away this soon-to-be starter because like Veruca Salt, “I want it now!!”.

This is the exact kind of move I was talking about and I love this for both sides. A competing team is getting a very solid QB2 in Matthew Stafford and gets the second round rookie pick to make up for the difference in value and to make up for the 15 year age gap between the players. A rebuilding team will get a starting quarterback next season, perfect.

I actually really like the upside of George Pickens. I believe in the talent of the player and even though Wilson and Fields have looked iffy at best in the preseason they are still better than any quarterback Pickens has played with. But I have said in many of these articles that if you can move a depth wide receiver for a starting quarterback you usually should, and this is one of those cases. If I am trading away the potential of a solid quarterback in superflex I want something more solid coming back and if I am trading away a quarterback without getting one back I need that tax put on the wide receiver side as well, and as you can see above, McCarthy is worth more.

Here is a trade for all you other people like me out there. Here is something you should be looking to do with the McCarthy shares you don’t have the patience to hold on to. Using random picks to upgrade McCarthy to not only a starting quarterback, but jumping up to a top 15 dynasty quarterback feels like an easy trade to accept.

The Trade Finder is full of very recent trades where competing and rebuilding teams are making deals to push their rosters in the right direction. Make sure you do your research in your league and see what condition the McCarthy manager’s roster is in. If they look like they were depending on him for points, go and try and scoop him up on a good deal.
