Devy Fantasy Football Wrap-Up: Week Six

Bruce Matson

As we get deeper into the season, the more dramatic college football gets. More is on the line and the matchups are starting to get tighter. Alabama almost lost to Texas A&M. There was a BIG12 battle between TCU and Kansas that went to the wire. BYU, Kentucky, and Washington all lost to unranked teams.

You better tell your family “no” to the pumpkin patch next week. We have no time for pumpkin-spiced lattes and hayrides because the matchups are going to be hot in college football for week six. We might look back at week six as the pivotal slate of games that most impacted the college season.

Below is a look at some of the top matchups for next week:

  • Penn State at Michigan
  • Alabama at Tennessee
  • Oklahoma State at TCU
  • NC State at Syracuse
  • Mississippi State at Kentucky
  • USC at Utah

QUARTERBACK

Quinn Ewers, Texas

Ewers had a good performance against Oklahoma, completing 21 of his 31 pass attempts for 289 yards and four touchdowns while throwing one interception. He demonstrated that he’s a natural passer who can thread the needle. It’s good to see him back on the field healthy. Now it’s time to watch him develop and see if he can reach his upside.

CJ Stroud, Ohio State

It was another Saturday with Stroud tossing the rock all over the place. Against Michigan State, he passed for 361 yards and six touchdowns. He had one interception early in the game, but he regained his composure and kept slinging dimes. Ohio State is off next week but will finish the month of October with games against Iowa and Penn State. We are all waiting to see what Stroud does against Michigan to finish the year.

Hendon Hooker, Tennessee

We need to be have serious conversations bout Hooker being a top prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft class. If there’s an underdog or slept-on prospect you want to root for this draft season, it might as well be Hooker. I’ve been writing about him for two years straight in devy recaps and from what I see he’s very efficient. In a conference game against LSU, he passed for 239 yards and two touchdowns. He led Tennessee to a 40-13 victory. Tennessee is currently 5-0 as they get ready to host Alabama next week. With Alabama and Georgia on the schedule, nobody can say Hooker won’t get tested this season.

RUNNING BACK

Israel Abanikanda, Pitt

Abanikanda ties Pitts’s school record with six touchdowns against Virginia Tech on Saturday. He also tallied 320 yards on 36 carries. This was his fourth 100-yard game, and he has 830 and 12 rushing touchdowns on the season. He has four 100-yard games and is averaging 3.13 yards after contact per attempt.

Bijan Robinson, Texas

We are looking at the 1.01 in next year’s rookie drafts. Nobody is going to argue that. Texas’ blowout victory against Oklahoma, Robinson rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns while also catching two balls for 15 yards. Performances like this are more of an expectation than a surprise. Most dynasty and devy gamers are ready to see him play in the NFL.

TreVeyon Henderson, Ohio State

Another devy big dog with a huge performance. Henderson rushed for 118 yards and one touchdown against Michigan State. With Miyan Williams out of the lineup, Henderson got the opportunity to get some extra workload. The former five-star recruit has posted back-to-back 100-yard performances. It’s important to note that he left the game early in the second half after a low tackle that caused him to hobble off the field. Head coach Ryan Day mentioned after the game that Henderson was good to return to action if the team needed him.

Blake Corum, Michigan

Corum is having a great year. This was his third-straight 100-yard game as he reeled off 124 yards and one touchdown against Indiana. He is currently averaging 3.18 yards after contact per attempt with 14 carries going for 15 yards or more. We will get to watch Corum test his rushing abilities against Penn State next week.

Chase Brown, Illinois

Brown has rushed for over 100 yards in each game this season. If it wasn’t for a tough loss against Indiana in week two, Illinois would be undefeated. Brown rushed for over 1,000 yards last season and will easily surpass that mark this year. He will be an interesting late-round prospect come draft season.

Braelon Allen, Wisconsin

Allen who is one of the top running backs in college football churned out another tough performance against Northwestern when he rushed for 135 yards. He is currently averaging 3.56 yards after contact per attempt. Allen is a 238-pound running back who is a hammer once he reaches full speed. He will be one of the top running back prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Jahmyr Gibbs, Alabama

You don’t have to watch Alabama games to know that Gibbs is performing because social media will erupt once Gibbs hits the field. Against Texas A&M he rushed for 154 yards while catching three passes for 13 yards. He has rushed for 360 yards and two touchdowns in his last two games. Gibbs is boosting his stock for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Zach Evans, Ole Miss

Evans has been quiet the last few weeks, but he made his presence felt against Vanderbilt where he carried the ball 11 times for 80 yards and a touchdown. He displayed the size-adjusted speed that gets devy gamers excited. Evans will be a heavily debated prospect this draft season.

Jaylen Jenkins, Washington State

Jenkins is a freshman running back to pay attention to. He broke off his first 100-yard performance against USC Saturday night. Prior to this performance, he only saw 24 carries in five games. It’s always important to keep an ear to the ground whenever a freshman running back starts to show signs of life.

Travis Dye, USC

Dye rushed for 149 yards and one touchdown while also catching three passes for 18 yards against Washington State. He’s an older running back prospect who is turning things around during his final season. Last year, he rushed for 1,271 yards and 16 touchdowns with Oregon.

Zach Charbonnet, UCLA

With four 100-yard performances in five games this season, Charbonnet is quietly adding to his resume. Remember as a true freshman he rushed for 11 touchdowns at Michigan. Now, he’s on pace to finish his collegiate career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons at UCLA. He is looking good, averaging 4.59 yards after contact per attempt.

Branson Robinson, Georgia

https://twitter.com/GABulldogsFB/status/1578884963331584001?s=20&t=VPzTve0KxwgR_HDx4tJxog

Robinson was one of the top high school recruits who blew social media since he already looks like a grown man. It was good to see him get some run in a blowout victory against Auburn where he rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown.

WIDE RECEIVER

Quentin Johnston, TCU

From a production standpoint, it’s been a down year for Johnston. However, against Kansas the game script broke open, allowing him to catch 14 passes for 206 yards and one touchdown. Sometimes you get a fun ride when you let the Ferrari out of the garage. Hopefully, this leads to more productive games from him so we can watch him showcase his skills on Saturdays.

Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State

Ohio State stole the WRU moniker from Clemson. Egbuka is easily one of the best wide receivers in the country. Against Michigan State, he caught five passes for 143 yards and one touchdown. He has been incredible, averaging 4.37 yards per route run and 9.9 yards after the catch per reception this season. Egbuka is very explosive with the ball in his hands which could make him a very valuable asset at the NFL level.

Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State

Harrison stole the show on Saturday. He made multiple highlight reel catches against Michigan State. It was another productive day, catching seven balls for 131 yards and three touchdowns. He’s a big wide receiver who is aggressive at the catch point and is known for being a nuanced route runner.

Evan Stewart, Texas A&M

The former five-star recruit racked up 108 receiving yards against Alabama. He is starting to showcase why he’s considered a top-tier high school prospect. He has caught five passes or more in four out of his five games as he’s trending into being a lucrative devy prospect.

Mario Williams, USC

The sophomore wide receiver consistently makes plays. Against Washington State, he caught four balls for 82 yards and two touchdowns. USC is back and with players like Williams dominating it’s only going to help quarterback Caleb Williams lead USC deep into the playoffs.

TIGHT END

Michael Mayer, Notre Dame

Mayer led Notre Dame in receiving against BYU with 11 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns. With what we’ve seen from him over the years, it’s going to be hard to imagine him not getting drafted in the first round.
