AFC IDP Snap Counts: Week Three

Wow. Week three is already in the books.

It is a great week to trade away the deadwood and bring in players your league-mates haven’t cottoned on to yet.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens played 75 tough snaps as they got mauled by the Chiefs.

Marcus Peters (75) and Marlon Humphrey (74) remain every-down corners with Jimmy Smith (66) playing his biggest game of the season. Anthony Averett (28) seems like a dime corner for now.

Matt Judon (56) is playing way more than any other edge player on the team.

At LB, LJ Fort (43) played nearly as much as Patrick Queen (47) did. This team really does not feel the need to have an orthodox LB on the field at all times – let alone two of them.

Buffalo Bills

Star LBs Tremaine Edmunds (68) and Matt Milano (69) both returned this week. Tyrel Dodson did not play a snap on defense. I hope he enjoyed his one week of relevance.

Rookie DE AJ Epenesa recorded his first sack. He played just 24 snaps though. He has 41 for the season which is less than Jerry Hughes (43) played in week three alone.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals played 91 snaps in their tie with the Eagles. So, the numbers are a bit inflated.

Carlos Dunlap (75) led the way for edge players. Sam Hubbard (69) and Carl Lawson (47) followed. 47 snaps is a good number for an edge player but Lawson still only played about 50%. He’s tough to rely on.

None of the LBs are good starts. Josh Bynes (66) is the top dog with Germaine Pratt (52) second in line. But Logan Wilson (29) and Akeem Davis-Gaither (25) have their own packages. It’s an ugly situation.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns played over 90 snaps last week against the Bengals – but just 65 this week. So, they may have seemed disappointing.

LB Mack Wilson returned from injury to six snaps. He has his supporters, but they will likely discover he’s just not that good. BJ Goodson (60) continues to lead the way in snaps with Sione Takitaki playing a bit-part and Malcolm Smith (26) getting in the way. Avoid this situation.

At safety Ronnie Harrison (7) was again a minor inconvenience. He was interesting as a Jaguar but totally droppable now.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos were clearly unimpressed by Jeremiah Attaochu (26) and Malik Reed (29) in the first two games. New signing Anthony Chickillo (33) came in and played more than them both immediately.

With Dre’Mont Jones out on the interior line, DeShawn Williams (27) and McTelvin Agim (9) both played. But the star is really Shelby Harris. He’s become a really good player.

Houston Texans

The Texans played 80 snaps this week against the Steelers and still very few players came out of it with credit.

JJ Watt was obviously one of them and he played a huge 72 snaps. Whitney Mercilus was way behind on 59.

Safety is clearly a concern with Earl Thomas almost (but not quite) signing this week. Eric Murray (73) should absolutely feel under threat. And Justin Reid (80) is not safe either.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have played just 168 snaps in three games. This is a good defense – but they’ve not been stretched yet.

Star LB Darius Leonard (57) had a good game, but his volume has hindered him so far. 37 other LBs have played more than he has through three weeks.

At safety Justin Blackmon (41) received the biggest share of Malik Hooker’s playing time – but Tavon Wilson (23) also got a chunk of them. Neither are hot targets.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Edge is a major problem for this team. Josh Allen (45) leads the group and had a fine game – but the rest of the options are not very good. One of Cassius Marsh (38), Adam Gotsis (34), K’Lavon Chaisson (24) and Dawuane Smoot (13) needs to step up.

At safety, Josh Jones (61) is the top IDP name but Andrew Wingard (32) and Brandon Watson (30) shared the other job.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs only had to play 56 snaps of defense against the Ravens, down from 83 the previous week.

Chris Jones (39) did his damage on limited snaps at DT – as did Frank Clark (45) on the edge. Tanoh Kpassagnon (46) is playing a lot but he’s been ineffective so far, to the point that they even gave Taco Charlton (14) playing time. And he’s horrible.

At LB the Chiefs have no interest in giving anyone a full-time job. Anthony Hitchens (36), Damien Wilson (36) and Ben Niemann (24) are all playing and will have big plays and weeks – but none are reliable.

Las Vegas Raiders

DE Maxx Crosby (42) was a caricature of himself on Sunday. He was fairly poor and only delivered two pressures – but both resulted in sacks. This is exactly who he is. If you can get a top dollar for him, he’s a consideration to sell.

Similarly, safety Johnathan Abram (60) is scoring well and playing most snaps – but still in a two-deep scheme. He’s a perfectly acceptable IDP safety. But he’s not a stand-out star at the position. And you can probably find someone who values him as one.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers played just 51 snaps this week – down from 76 a week ago. Losing a third of snaps is a big blow to most IDPs.

DE Melvin Ingram missed the game so Uchenna Nwosu stepped up to play 47 snaps. He’s been excellent the last two straight games without recording a sack. A definite waiver wire target.

Gus Bradley shocked us by using the same LBs two weeks straight. Kenneth Murray (45) seems all but guaranteed his snaps with Kyzir White (50) holding the other job. Denzel Perryman (18) was the third man.

Miami Dolphins

Star corner Byron Jones missed this game. He and Xavien Howard (66) have now been on the field together for precisely 25 snaps in three weeks.

Jerome Baker (59) remains the sole every-down LB. Kamu Grugier-Hill (20) had a good week on limited snaps but he’s not a realistic starting option right now.

New England Patriots

Through three weeks the Patriots have yet to play a single snap in base secondary (two corners and two safeties). This is a unique defense.

They did alter it this week against the run-heavy defense. Deatrich Wise (39) played more at DE at the expense of John Simon (37) and Chase Winovich (32) who are more specialist pass rushers.

New York Jets

Oh, dear. There’s just not much to be excited by here.

On the defensive line, Quinnen Williams (33) leads the way but he could not replicate his week two explosion.

The edge is just a mess. Eight different players saw playing time – but none played more than Jordan Jenkins’ 35 snaps.

LB this week was Neville Hewitt (60) and Avery Williamson (57). Alec Ogletree and Harvey Langi have evaporated into dust.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers played just 47 snaps this week – not enough to get much going. Although given how good a pass-rushing unit, they are they still amassed six sacks.

There were no big changes to individual playing time, however. Keep starting every Steeler who gets the chance to blitz.

Tennessee Titans

Safety Amani Hooker (14) had a big play – but he’s not seeing startable volume at the moment.

Edge Vic Beasley (166) made his team debut, but he is a distant third man to Harold Landry (61) and Jadeveon Clowney (55). Beasley is barely rosterable in any IDP format.
