Dynasty Fantasy Football Trading Post: 2025 Rookie 1.01

You have earned the first overall pick in your rookie draft, congratulations! Or I’m sorry!
With the consensus first overall pick of this year’s rookie draft being a running back it makes holding the first pick a little uneasy. If you earned the pick then most likely your team isn’t one player away from competing and usually running back is the last position a rebuilding team would acquire to make that push into competition. Let’s take a look at the DLF Trade Finder and Trade Analyzer and see if we can answer the question of what to do with the 2025 1.01 draft pick.

With the first overall pick being a running back this is a great move for a team that isn’t ready to compete, take your shot at getting the quarterback for the future and get a future first on top. If you are a competing team that happened to fall into the 1.02 then this is also a great move to make that push towards the championship. If you earned the 1.02 this feels a little too risky to think you can turn it around this quickly.

If I were holding the 1.01 and didn’t have a solid quarterback on my roster I would definitely be willing to send that pick for Murray. I agree with the Trade Analyzer that the value is close but I would give the edge to the quarterback. I believe in Kyler Murray so I would be wary to give him up for a single draft pick. Most mock drafts have the Cardinals bringing in pass-catching help which should make Murray’s life a little easier and hopefully create a bounce-back from one of his worst fantasy seasons in the pros.

“Trade back” is one of the more popular mantras in dynasty fantasy football these days. I think this is a pretty good example of what you can expect when trading back from the first overall pick. I wish that the first pick was a little earlier (1.04 or 1.05) but I don’t think I would let that kill the deal if I knew my team was more than one piece away from being a contender.
During a rebuild, the goal is to earn the first overall rookie draft pick but that doesn’t mean you need to actually make the pick in the draft. Sometimes trading it away can be better for your team than using it. I think these are three trades that are good ideas of what to do with the pick if you don’t plan on making it yourself.
