Dynasty Fantasy Football Trading Post: Christian McCaffrey

If you have followed this series over the past few years, you would know that I am a firm believer in not trading for running backs during the off-season when points aren’t being scored. The position is quite volatile with both NFL roster management and injuries that it usually makes sense to wait until you need their points to add them to your roster. As with every rule, there are exceptions and this player is one of the exceptions for two reasons. First of all they are coming off an injury-riddled season, and second, because if healthy they have the ability to break fantasy football scoring. Today we are going to be looking through the DLF Trade Finder and Trade Analyzer for trades involving…
Christian McCaffrey, RB SF
A lot of us are still freshly burned from drafting McCaffrey nice and early for the 2024 season only to be left holding the bag due to a plethora of injuries, only playing in four games. What keeps me optimistic about the stud running back is that straight back from his first injury, he came back and averaged over 16 touches per game. When McCaffrey is on the field, he is the guy. The upside that he possesses makes it worth acquiring him whenever you can for your competing teams. Now let’s go look at some trades.
12 team superflex PPR start 10.
A backup to a workhorse, a twice-torn ACL, and a pretty good RB2 is an easy price to pay for someone who has the ability to be the running back one overall in scoring. The age difference between the main players in this trade isn’t even a very large gap. Even for someone as risk averse as I can be, this feels like an easy trade for the stud RB.

I understand the feeling that you should be getting rid of old running backs in the off-season, especially if you happen to decide to rebuild. But as I have said in many of these articles, you shouldn’t trade for picks just for the sake of trading for picks. The value needs to be there. I don’t believe the value is here and neither does the Analyzer. This is a time patience might be a virtue, wait until you are closer to the start of the season and people will remember just how many points McCaffrey can score.
12 team 1 QB PPR start 9.
This is an example of a time you shouldn’t trade for a player just because someone says to trade for them. I am all for acquiring Christian McCaffrey on all of my competing teams, but the price needs to be there. I already wrote an article about how much I still believe in Marvin Harrison Jr and it appears the Analyzer still believes in him over the stud running back. In the off-season, dynasty value is the most important aspect to your roster, and this is giving up far too much value.
Zigging while everyone else is zagging, or any version of that cliche, is a great way to get ahead of the rest of your league. While I am usually against acquiring running backs, no less a 28-year-old running back, in March I think going after Christian McCaffrey now before we see workout videos and before we see articles about how he will be ready for the start of the season is the smart move.
