Dynasty Fantasy Football Trading Post: Marquise Brown

Russ Fisher

Shiny new toys come in all shapes and sizes. In dynasty, most of those come in the form of rookies. Some of our shiny new toys aren’t very new and sometimes not very shiny. But when a player changes teams, it’s like slapping on a new coat of paint and cleaning out the inside of your 2016 Subaru Legacy (hey, it feels new enough to me!)

This year’s free agency did not disappoint us when it came to movement. Many fantasy-relevant players found new homes and in that, found renewed dynasty value.

When a wide receiver changes teams, the first thing you think about is who will be throwing him the ball now. When you think of all the quarterbacks you want to be throwing the ball to your fantasy wide receivers, one of the first names that most likely comes to mind is Patrick Mahomes. That is exactly who will now be throwing the ball to our subject…

Marquise Brown, WR KC

Even though it feels like Brown has been in the league for 15 years (it has only been five), he is still only 26 years old. Even with our increasingly ageist views, that is still not quite “old”. Taken in the first round of the NFL Draft and in the second round in most of your superflex rookie drafts, ‘Hollywood’ has settled into a career as a fantasy WR2 with the talent and upside to have some nice spike weeks. Brown also has a way of ending up with some nice quarterbacks, starting his career with Lamar Jackson, moving to Kyler Murray, and now joining Patrick Mahomes.

The question I am excited to answer by looking through the DLF Trade Finder is whether Hollywood’s value has increased enough where it makes sense to trade him away or if he still seems cheap enough that getting him on your roster is the right move. Let’s look.

According to the analyzer, Brown is worth approximately the 2.03 in a one-quarterback league. That definitely feels too low. In a one-quarterback rookie draft, the top tier of players is about four deep (Marvin Harrison Jr, Malik Nabers, Rome Odunze, and Brock Bowers). Then we need to decide how many players you would slot in after that before you would prefer the value of Brown. Off the top of my head, I cannot come up with six other names I would put on that list so I would take the known quantity and add the vet to my roster in this deal.

With every day that passes and more trades are completed, I believe that Brown’s value in the analyzer will increase. Even with that in mind, I don’t think it reaches the level of Cooper Kupp’s value. I know Kupp didn’t have a great season last year but it is hard to believe that even if Brown were to outscore him, it would be by the amount of having to add to the Kupp side of the trade.

I know a second-round pick two years out doesn’t really hold that much weight in a trade but when you are trading same-position players at this level of value, that pick still makes it easier for me to make the decision of rolling with the even older guy (Kupp, just in case you weren’t sure).

12 team, superflex, PPR, TE premium, start 10.

I can see either side on this one. Jake Ferguson is coming off of a relative breakout year, and with this being a league where tight ends get an extra half-point per reception, that makes him a solid trade chip and a nice piece to have on a growing roster.

If you don’t believe that Ferguson will live up to his production last year or if he happens to be the third tight end on your roster, I can easily see the upside of moving him for Brown. Both of these players can bring production and value upside to your rosters. Unlike the last trade, the 3.03 doesn’t really weigh enough to make me sway to either side of this trade.

A rise in a player’s dynasty value is always a good thing. It is the next move you make with that information that is what matters. Does it make sense to go and grab some shares or to shed some and profit off that increase? The answer to that is always very roster and league-specific so keep your eyes on DLF and use the player news, Trade Finder, and Trade Analyzer to your advantage.
