DLF’s 2018 IDP Predictions: Best Dynasty Buy

Eric Olinger

Every July and August people are looking for sleepers, players on the come up or comeback. They want to know who is going to be the next Alvin Kamara or, on the flip side, who runs the risk of being the next Willie Snead? Whether you’re reading because you’re into dynasty leagues, keeper leagues or just the annual redraft, you’re looking for the value of the hidden gem, the next big thing, and trying to avoid the next big pitfall.

Offensive leagues are infinitely more popular than IDP leagues, I’m not living under a rock, but whether it’s a website, a podcast or a show on SiriusXM, the offensive talents have been discussed over and over to the point every player has been on the breakout and the breakdown lists. You’re here because you like a meatier cut of heavily marbled fantasy beef. You’re here for the 32-ounce tomahawk ribeye with a bone sticking out of it so far it looks like a weapon of war, and you know what? It is.

After having to step away for the off-season, I return for another season of IDP writing for Dynasty League Football and what better way than to reach out to my IDP brethren, from DLF and beyond, and ask them for their picks for the following categories:

IDP Comeback Player of the Year

IDP Sell

IDP Buy

IDP Rookie of the Year

IDP Sleeper of the Year

IDP MVP

Please note I have included the Twitter handles of each person who contributed. If you’re reading this you should be following them. Today’s topic is IDP Buy.

Danielle Hunter, DE MIN

The belief persists that Hunter had a bad season last year and if there’s any sniff of a discount then I’ll capitalize in a heartbeat. Hunter had just two pressures fewer than Everson Griffen last season but four fewer sacks. That could easily flip around in 2018. – Tom Kislingbury @TomDegenerate

Robert Quinn, DE MIA

Linebackers are the smoking hot chick at the bar everyone wants in the IDP world but difference-making defensive ends are the super hot soccer moms you really want in order have a good life. Quinn’s IDP stock took a hit when he fought injuries and then moved to outside linebacker in the Rams’ 3-4 defense. Fast forward to this year and he has a return to a 4-3 defense on a new squad in Miami. Quinn is just 28 years old and should easily bounce back to double-digit sacks. I’d definitely get a price check on Quinn. – Eric Olinger @OlingerIDP

Frank Clark, DE SEA

The Seahawks pass rusher will be heavily featured after Michael Bennett was traded to Philadelphia and Cliff Avril was forced to retire. Pro Football Focus graded Clark out as their 21st overall edge defender (out of 124 defenders with a minimum of 200 snaps). Clark is also in the final year of his rookie contract and played with an injured wrist in 2017. – Pete Lawrence @_PeteLaw

Cory Littleton ILB LAR

Go get him, he’s on many waiver wires… still! – Andy Miley @AndrewMiley of Dynasty Trade Calculator

Derwin James, S, LAC

All signs point to the rookie lining up as the starting strong safety for the Chargers when week one kicks off. He is a sound tackler who is above average in coverage and I’ll be buying on James even if they decide to utilize him more at free safety. – Walton Spurling @WaltonSpurlin of PFF

Blake Martinez, ILB GB

Yes, you are a bit late buying. However, many still do not believe. Jake Ryan going down will help Martinez be even more productive this year. He’s not sexy, but super solid. – Bill Latin @BillLatin

Anthony Hitchens, ILB KCC

If Hitchens can stay healthy, he is a lock for an LB1 year. The new Kansas City Chief will be cleaning up after an attacking front and a secondary that lost Marcus Peters. He will also instantly inherit the tackles left after the departure of Derrick Johnson. Reggie Ragland is his only real issue on the linebacking front and whatever Eric Berry has left. Hitchens could still be a smoking value from owners that don’t know what they have. – Adam Tzikas @Adamtz, aka StickyZ

(tie) Roquan Smith, MLB SF / Myles Garrett, DE CLE

There’s a theme here, see? Garrett is coming off a rookie year in which he impressed after returning from injury. The questions surrounding whether he can stay healthy through all 16 games are real. However, if he can find stability, he’s going to be a pass rush IDP monster for years to come. Roquan Smith is jumping into a storied position in Chicago. If he can produce, they’ll lean on him to be their stalwart inside linebacker in perpetuity. – Kelly Smelser @PDWonderland

Rashaan Evans, ILB TEN

It’s been a rough first off-season for Evans. He’s struggled to stay on the practice field in Nashville and as such, he’s presently buried on a Titans depth chart that’s all the muddier now with the acquisition of Kamalei Correa. But buck up, intrepid dynasty dorks – brighter days are coming. Evans’ talent didn’t evaporate when he entered the NFL. Wesley Woodyard isn’t getting any younger. Will Compton couldn’t cover a bed with a sheet. And Jayon Brown has had a habit of getting blown up at the point of attack in the past. It may not be this year, but Evans is going to be a three-down linebacker in Tennessee. Even in deeper IDP dynasties people tend to get impatient – especially if they feel like they’ve been ripped off by a player who hasn’t met expectations. If you can afford to think big-picture with Evans and he falls out of favor with another owner in your league, be ready to pounce. – Gary Davenport @IDPSharks of Fantasy Sharks, RotoWorld, and Football Diehards
