DLF’s Weekly Impact Events

Ryan McDowell

With training camps underway, the NFL news is flowing at a furious pace. It’s nearly impossible to keep up and that’s why we’re here with the latest updates from all dynasty relevant players over the past several days.

Jimmy Graham, TE SEA

The Seattle Seahawks have activated tight end Jimmy Graham, whose 2015 season ended with a nasty patellar tendon injury. Graham’s dynasty stock has plummeted and he barely has any value at this point. With Graham expected to get back on the field soon, he has a chance to reclaim some of that value, though it seems he’ll never get back to his glory days in New Orleans. If he can prove he is healthy, Graham is the favorite to start for Seattle, though he had little fantasy impact even before the injury last season.

Marvin Jones, WR DET

Former Bengals receiver Marvin Jones, now with the Detroit Lions, has been a favorite of many fantasy analysts over the past few months. Now, some Lions beat writers are taking notice and one is already pegging Jones as the Lions top receiver, ahead of Golden Tate. With Matthew Stafford expected to maintain his typically high volume of pass attempts, Jones could be a solid fantasy WR2. He’s still undervalued as the WR42 in our latest dynasty ADP data, easily behind Tate and many others.

Kendall Wright, WR TEN

Titans wideout Kendall Wright is still not practicing as he is dealing with a hamstring issue. The Titans have a deep pass catching group and some younger players are stepping up in Wright’s absence. While he carries some name value after a solid start to his career, Wright has been unimpressive lately and now falls into the roster clogger category.

Ty Montgomery, WR GB

The Green Bay Packers have activated wide receiver Ty Montgomery from the PUP list, making him eligible to practice. Montgomery’s ankle injury was very serious and the surgery it took to repair the injury made the recovery even more challenging. The good news is Montgomery is now back and ready to practice, but the bad news is he will need to overcome both Davante Adams and Jeff Janis to earn significant playing time. Montgomery is barely worthy of a roster spot in deeper dynasty leagues. The Packers also activated tight end Jared Cook from the PUP list and is worth rostering in hopes he can win the starting job in the Packers pass happy offense.

Stevie Johnson, WR SD

We learned several days ago that Chargers veteran wideout Stevie Johnson had suffered a torn meniscus and now the fears that his season would be lost have been confirmed. Johnson had surgery to repair the tear and will miss the entire 2016 season. Johnson was being pegged as a potential late round value, but this news means he is no longer worthy of a roster spot in dynasty formats. Johnson will be 31 entering the 2017 season and may never be fantasy relevant again. The Chargers signed another veteran wide receiver, James Jones, to take his spot.

Josh Doctson, WR WAS

Rookie receiver Josh Doctson continues to miss Redskins training camp as he sits out with a sore Achilles, an issue he has reportedly dealt with since May. Doctson was already projected as the fourth option in the passing game and needs to get on the field soon to have a chance of making an early impact. In recent rookie and startup drafts, Doctson has fallen behind Giants receiver Sterling Shepard.

Breshad Perriman, WR BAL

Although he has yet to practice, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh recently announced that second year receiver Breshad Perriman is expected to be ready to go by week one of the regular season. This is great news for the Ravens, Perriman and dynasty owners. Just a few weeks ago, it appeared that Perriman could be dealing with another lost season. Harbaugh also suggested veteran Steve Smith would be back for the regular season, giving Joe Flacco multiple options in the passing game.

Robert Griffin III, QB CLE

The Cleveland Browns named Robert Griffin III as their starting quarterback for week one. It’s no surprised, although the formal announcement did come rather early in training camp. It was clear Griffin would be the team’s starter from the time they signed the former Redskin and with the Browns pass catchers suddenly looking deep, RG3 could be in store for a bounce back season.

Jordan Matthews, WR PHI

Eagles star receiver Jordan Matthews went down with a knee injury early in training camp and it didn’t look good. Fortunately, the injury was not serious, though it was later diagnosed as a bone bruise, which will cost Matthews much of his pre-season. Matthews should be a full go for the regular season and is considered the favorite to be the Eagles top receiver. After two productive seasons under Chip Kelly, Matthews is actually being undervalued.

Stefon Diggs, WR MIN

You have to be careful what you believe when it comes to training camp reports, but all of the news centered around sophomore wideout Stefon Diggs has been glowing. After a surprising rookie season, Diggs is reportedly showing signs of improvement and is projected to be the team’s leading receiver entering the season. Meanwhile, rookie Laquon Treadwell is off to a slow start, being listed as a backup on the initial depth chart. Both players are attractive candidates to buy in dynasty leagues as the season nears.

Julian Edelman, WR NE

The Patriots activated receiver Julian Edelman off the PUP list late last week and it wasn’t long before he was missing practice again with a flare up of that same foot injury. It appears as if Edelman dodged a bullet and the new issue is not serious, but this is a reminder of how frustrating Edelman can be for fantasy players. As a dynasty asset, he remains undervalued, but some of that is clearly due to his always iffy health status.
