There is no greater advantage in dynasty leagues than hitting on your late-round rookie picks. Finding difference-makers late on in the draft enables you to add depth to your roster to gain an advantage over your leaguemates, especially when considering the odds of your third or fourth round rookie picks actually hitting.
The headline name for this from the past few years is Puka Nacua of the Los Angeles Rams, drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft and fourth round of your rookie drafts, before turning into a consensus top-five dynasty wide receiver. That level of breakout is almost impossible, but a sign of the upside that can be found if you can hit on your late-round picks.
The 2024 draft class didn’t bring us a Nacua, but there were absolutely some gems from day three that you were delighted with in year one.
Bucky Irving is obviously the biggest name here, finishing as the PPR RB13 with 1,122 yards on the ground, eight rushing touchdowns, and just under 400 receiving yards. His finish to the year was league-winning - from week ten onwards, he finished outside the top ten RBs on the week just three times, and outside the top 20 RBs once.
However, the other names here definitely out-produced their draft cost. Tracy finished at RB26, Guerendo finished strong due to injuries, and Vele finished as a top 40 WR six times across the season.
We’ll take a look at each round of day three of the 2025 draft to find a gem for you to target.
The easy names here are Cam Skattebo and Bhayshul Tuten, who both went in the first three picks of day three, but seeing as they’re going in the early second round of rookie drafts, they hardly fit the “late round lottery tickets” brief.
Instead, we’ll go with Hunter out of Auburn. The Rams traded up for Hunter in the fourth, with Sean McVay and Les Snead saying he was the top offensive player on their board going into day three. Kyren Williams needs an extension and the Rams are still scared of paying running backs after what happened to Todd Gurley. Hunter is a similar profile to both Williams and Blake Corum, but much more explosive. His explosive run rate (per Pro Football Focus) was nearly double that of Williams and Corum. If he can seize control of this backfield (either in 2025 or 2026 once Kyren leaves), he’ll be a huge value in an explosive, high-powered offense.
Hunter is currently the RB19 per DLF’s April rookie ADP, going at the 4.05. With a lot of the running backs slipping into day three, there are a lot of other backs going in the same range, but Hunter has the profile and landing spot to hit.
