Four Tight Ends to Buy, Sell, or Hold in Dynasty Leagues

Welcome to the ‘Buy, Sell, or Hold’ series where each week I’ll be focusing on one position to analyze four players and what we should be doing with them. This week we’re back to tight ends focusing on four players outside of the elite group.
Evan Engram, TE JAC – Buy
In his second year with the Jaguars, 2023 was another successful year for Engram. He ended the season leading all tight ends in targets and catches while finishing as the TE4 with 13.5 PPR PPG. For much of his career, Engram was seen as a disappointment, never living up to the hopes and dreams many had after having one of the best rookie tight end seasons ever. Since joining the Jaguars, however, Engram has continued to produce. For 2024 the Jaguars offense is currently set to look very similar to how it did last year with the only real change being Calvin Ridley switching out for Gabe Davis.
The Move – Engram has been one of the few reliable tight ends over the last two years and nothing should change. The Jaguars made a clear downgrade going from Calvin Ridley to Gabe Davis and that’s great for Engram. Davis doesn’t earn targets at the same level as Ridley and Engram is one of the few tight ends who will actually earn more opportunities as the players around him get worse. Tier down from Travis Kelce, George Kittle, or David Njoku to Engram while getting an additional player or a draft pick added on.
Jake Ferguson, TE DAL – Sell
Ferguson had a breakout year in 2023, his second season in the league. He finished as the TE10 with 10.4 PPR PPG while being second on the Cowboys in targets and seventh among all tight ends in the NFL. A fourth-round NFL Draft pick in 2022, he wasn’t seen as a particularly exciting prospect entering the NFL but he’s impressed so far basically picking up where Dalton Schultz before him left off. The question for Ferguson at this point is whether he is truly a player who deserves the opportunities he earned in 2023 or is he a product of the Cowboys offense and a lack of exciting weapons after CeeDee Lamb?
The Move – Ferguson is a quality tight end but he’s not a difference-maker. It’s very important to remember that while he earned the seventh most targets among tight ends, he did it in an offense where no one else was able to stand out as a pass catcher after Lamb and Ferguson. Ferguson himself wasn’t that impressive on an individual level finishing 15th in yards per route run and 13th in yards per team pass attempt. I want to use Ferguson to tier up to a difference-making tight end and see how much it takes to get up to the likes of Dalton Kincaid, Mark Andrews, and TJ Hockenson.
Dallas Goedert, TE PHI – League Dependent
Goedert has been Mr Reliable at tight end, averaging between 9.6 and 11.8 PPR PPG over the last five years, having 9.7 in 2023. Additionally, he has been top 12 in target share among tight ends every year over the same period of time. The problem for Goedert is that while he’s been reliable, he’s rarely reached the ceiling we hoped he could, finishing in the top five at the position just once. Playing with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, it’s hard to see how he could. Heading into the 2024 season when Goedert will turn 30, the question remains about what kind of projectable ceiling he truly has.
The Move – Goedert is a bit of a divisive player evidenced by being the TE13 in the Dynasty League Football March Startup ADP while sitting as the TE9 in the DLF Rankings. I find myself closer to the startup ADP and would just hold at that price. But, if I’m able to sell Goedert at TE9 prices I’m definitely interested. Being able to trade Goedert for Evan Engram with a plus or adding on to Goedert to get to a top tight end are winning moves.
Pat Freiermuth, TE PIT – Buy
2023 was quite a disappointing season for Freiermuth. He dealt with injuries causing him to miss five games, had to try and overcome Matt Canada’s offense, and had just 6.4 PPR PPG, good enough for TE28 on the year. Through his first two years in the NFL Freiermuth was an exciting player with lots of potential while having finishes of TE16 as a rookie and TE11 in his sophomore season after entering the league as a well-thought-of prospect. With a new offensive coordinator and quarterback, can Freiermuth regain his previous standing in 2024?
The Move – I believe much more in Pat Freiermuth’s first two seasons than his third one. I understand it’s hard to get excited for Russell Wilson at quarterback and Arthur Smith as new offensive coordinator but I believe in Freiermuth’s talent. With his current depressed price, TE16 in the Dynasty League Football Rankings and TE17 in the Dynasty League Football March Startup ADP, I want to bet on that talent. Tier down from Jake Ferguson to Freiermuth with a plus or work cross-positionally by trading Quentin Johnson or Zamir White for him.
With the NFL Draft coming soon and rookie drafts to closely follow, it’s a great time to find potential trades as everyone looks to position themselves. Happy trading!
