Bowers hails from California’s Napa wine country. He’s the son of an All-American softball player and an All-Conference football player from Utah State University, where they met. He played football and basketball at Napa High School. As a freshman, he played quarterback and ran the triple option. He moved to tight end and linebacker as a sophomore. He was an All-American his junior season, racking up 1,499 all-purpose yards and setting a school record with 14 touchdown catches. His senior season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was a four-star recruit out of high school and the second-ranked tight end in the class by 247 Sports. Despite that, some schools still recruited him to play linebacker, such as Notre Dame. He received 22 offers from FBS schools, including Michigan, Boston College and LSU. He wanted to play college football in the south, and chose to join Kirby Smart at the University of Georgia.
