With the end of each year comes an opportunity to look back and see what went right, what went wrong, and what was just truly unexpected. Much like Spotify Wrapped, I will look back on 2022 to see what transpired and which devy assets had their managers singing along to their favorite tunes.
The Pac-12 was so close to breaking through to the playoff in 2022. USC was in with a win in the Pac-12 Championship Game, yet it was Utah who once again took it to the Trojans to beat them for the second time this year and ruin the league’s bid for the final four. Between the Utes, Trojans, Ducks, and a seemingly resurgent Bruins, this could theoretically be a league on the rise, though optimism is of course dimmed by the looming departure of USC and UCLA. Still, there is plenty of talent here on what many refer to as the best coast.
Once Lincoln Riley left Oklahoma, the buzz started to swirl indicating Williams would follow him out. While it was not a slam dunk Williams would be a Trojan, it was the best fit the entire time and his presence allowed USC to emerge from the doldrums to become a true national power again. He was fantastic at every turn, ultimately earning a trip to New York and hoisting the Heisman Trophy.
Williams is a unique blend of arm talent, mobility, and ability to make plays out of structure. After a strong debut in Norman, he took his game to the next level in Los Angeles. He is a college football star and the heavy favorite to go first overall in 2024.
