Josh McDaniels landed his third, well officially second, head coaching gig when he was named the 22nd head coach in Raiders franchise history on January 31st, 2022. McDaniels was 11-17 (.393 winning percentage) with the Denver Broncos in 2009 and 2010 before ultimately being fired after just 12 games into his second campaign in the Mile High City.
The long-time New England Patriots offensive coordinator did accept the job as the head coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 before doing a 180° turn and returning to Foxborough. McDaniels has had the good fortune to learn from two of the best coaches in football history. His career started as a senior graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Michigan State University and then he joined Bill Belichick in New England in 2001 as a personnel assistant.
We will be asking the question yet again whether it is the coach or the player, as almost all of the success the veteran coach has seen has come with Tom Brady as his quarterback. For Raiders fans, let’s hope the third time truly is a charm for McDaniels as a headman.
Is the quarterback of the future on the roster in Vegas? Derek Carr is a free agent in 2023 and will be 32 years old when his contract expires. Marcus Mariota, a capable backup who could potentially start on some teams, is a free agent this season. Time will tell if the newest leader of the storied organization will stay put with what he has or try to convince the front office to make a big swing at the position.
