DraftKings Bargains: Week Five

Bruce Matson

The five-dollar bargain bin at Walmart is where you can find some forgotten treasures like Talladega Nights, Good Fellas and even Rudy. It’s a great feeling when you scrape through the bottom of the bin and you actually find a watchable movie. That same feeling resonates through my body while I comb through the salaries on DraftKings. It’s a windfall of emotion that paralyzes me while I try and find players at a reduced cost that will greatly impact my lineup.

If you diligently look through the salaries, you too can find a few forgotten classics at the bottom of the five-dollar bin. Luckily, I’m here to assist you with insight on some of the cheap plays on DraftKings this week so you don’t have to rummage through multiple copies of Air Bud Six Lost in Space to find your contrarian player for your GPP lineup.

QUARTERBACK

Blake Bortles, QB JAX ($5,500)

Bortles is set for a prime matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. I know the Jaguars have one of the best defenses in the NFL, but the Chiefs have one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Leonard Fournette exited week four’s game against the New York Jets and the odds of him suiting up and playing this week are slim to none. Therefore, the Jaguars’ offense will need to rely on Bortles’ arm if they want to keep up with Kansas City’s high-powered offensive attack.

He’s a cheap acquisition at $5,500 and his cheap price tag will allow you to pay up at other positions. By being able to spend more on other players, you will be able to maximize the rest of your lineup. He still has a lot of potential even though he’s one of the lower-priced quarterbacks on DraftKings. This week’s matchup against the Chiefs will help boost his fantasy production.

I’m not going to lie, I couldn’t wait to lookup up the line for this game. The contrasting styles between these two teams are very interesting. We have the Jaguars stellar defense versus Patrick Mahomes and the Funky Bunch. Vegas also didn’t disappoint, setting the over/under for this game at 49 points and they have the Chiefs favored by three. All that means to me is that I’m going to be firing up Bortles in a lot of lineups this week.

Other options: Patrick Mahomes $6,200, Joe Flacco $5,400, Derek Carr $5,200

RUNNING BACK

Aaron Jones, RB GB ($4,300)

Jones led the team in rushing last week, toting 11 carries for 65 yards and one touchdown. It appears that he will be the team’s lead back and his workload should increase going forward. He will be playing against a Detroit Lions defense that allowed 183 yards on the ground last week to the Dallas Cowboys. The second-year running back should be able to exploit a Detroit defense that has been struggling against the run.

He’s a very explosive runner who can make defenses pay if he can continuously get through the hole and find the second level of the defense. I wouldn’t be surprised if next week is his coming out party and he runs all over the Lions’ defense. This is a great matchup for the Packers’ offense in general which should help boost Jones’ overall fantasy potential.

Bovada has the over/under set at 50.5 points and they also have the Packers favorited by 1.5 points. Vegas has this game as a high-scoring affair which indicates to us that Green Bay should be in scoring position multiple times in this game. With that said, the game script should benefit Jones and should help fuel his fantasy production.

Other options: Tevin Coleman $6,400, Austin Ekeler $4,200, Nick Chubb $3,800

WIDE RECEIVER

Amari Cooper, WR OAK ($5,500)

No matter what you think about Cooper as a dynasty asset, he can still put up WR1 fantasy points any given week. He will be playing against the Los Angeles Chargers this week and this game should be a high-scoring affair. In his last six appearances against the Chargers, Cooper has produced three WR1 games. He has the potential to blow up the box score again against a very explosive Chargers team.

Cooper isn’t one of the most reliable wide receivers in fantasy, but his price tag for this week will help boost your overall lineup. He has the potential to provide WR1 production while alleviating room in your bankroll to overspend at other positions. This adds value to his stock on DraftKings.

Vegas has the over/under for this game at 54.0 points and the Los Angeles Chargers are favored to win by six. The Raiders are expected to be trailing during most of this game which means they will need to throw the football in order for them to keep up with the Chargers’ high-powered offense. The flow of the game should be in Cooper’s favor and he should see an increase of targets as the game goes on.

Other options: Sterling Shepard $5,600, John Brown $5,600, Marvin Jones $4,700

TIGHT END

Jimmy Graham, TE GB ($4,700)

The salaries on DraftKings aren’t very encouraging for the tight end position this week. Therefore, I advise that you spend a few extra dollars on some of the top tight ends. I really like Jimmy Graham this week due to his price and match up against the Detroit Lions. He should receive a fair amount of targets since the Packers will need to throw the ball to keep up with the Lions’ high-flying offense. This could be the highest scoring game of the week and Graham is one the team’s main target hogs, making him a good addition to your DraftKings lineup.

You can certainly go cheaper at tight end this week, but Graham’s salary is fairly cheap, and the risk associated with him is limited. The odds of him not delivering is fairly low and he as much upside as any of the other top tight ends. There’s a chance that he could blow up and elevate the chances of you winning big money this week.

As I previously stated, the over/under for the Packers-Lions game is set at 50.5 points and the line is fairly close with Green Bay favored by 1.5 points. Historically, Vegas isn’t far off when it comes to their implied point totals. We should be expecting both teams to be lighting up the scoreboard in this game which will create an ample opportunity for Graham to transform into a fantasy juggernaut this week.

Other options: Austin Seferian-Jenkins $2,900, Ricky Seals-Jones $2,900, Dallas Goedert $2,700
