DLF’s 2018 IDP Predictions: Best Dynasty Sell

Eric Olinger

Every July and August people are looking for sleepers, players on the come up or comeback. They want to know who is going to be the next Alvin Kamara or, on the flip side, who runs the risk of being the next Willie Snead? Whether you’re reading because you’re into dynasty leagues, keeper leagues or just the annual redraft, you’re looking for the value of the hidden gem, the next big thing, and trying to avoid the next big pitfall.

Offensive leagues are infinitely more popular than IDP leagues, I’m not living under a rock, but whether it’s a website, a podcast or a show on SiriusXM, the offensive talents have been discussed over and over to the point every player has been on the breakout and the breakdown lists. You’re here because you like a meatier cut of heavily marbled fantasy beef. You’re here for the 32-ounce tomahawk ribeye with a bone sticking out of it so far it looks like a weapon of war, and you know what? It is.

After having to step away for the off-season, I return for another season of IDP writing for Dynasty League Football and what better way than to reach out to my IDP brethren, from DLF and beyond, and ask them for their picks for the following categories:

IDP Comeback Player of the Year

IDP Sell

IDP Buy

IDP Rookie of the Year

IDP Sleeper of the Year

IDP MVP

Please note I have included the Twitter handles of each person who contributed. If you’re reading this you should be following them. Today’s topic is IDP Sell.

Kevin Byard, S TEN

I’ll go for Kevin Byard. I love him as a player and he’s been effective as an IDP too. But he’s fundamentally a deeper safety and just doesn’t have the box alignment or instincts that perennial top ten IDP safeties do. He’s being valued as a top safety right now. Take that value if you can. – Tom Kislingbury @TomDegenerate

K.J. Wright, LB SEA

He’s a player I feel never gets the respect he deserves, but I’m going to recommend selling him. Wright will be a free agent at the end of the season and the Seahawks are in the middle of a youth movement. Add in the fact they drafted Shaquem Griffin who I believe will excel in this league and Wright is a player I’m willing to sell a year too early opposed to a year too late. – Eric Olinger @OlingerIDP

Earl Thomas, S SEA

He doesn’t want to be there and Seattle doesn’t seem to be interested in what he wants. Word is Thomas really wants to go to Dallas, but I don’t know if there’s a lot of opportunity there for him. If he stays put, how much effort is a player who hates his job and his employer really going to give? I’d think twice before pulling the trigger on Thomas. – Doug Green @BigBoardIDP

Olivier Vernon, LB NYG

Vernon will be making the shift from defensive end to linebacker, limiting his IDP value (league format dependent). He’s still a great pass rusher but will be playing in a new position as the team shifts to a 3-4 defense. – Pete Lawrence @_PeteLaw

Jatavis Brown, ILB LAC

His value has been plummeting since right after his rookie season. Sell him for a ham sandwich if you can. – Andy Miley @AndrewMiley of Dynasty Trade Calculator

Karl Joseph, S OAK

Recent reports out of Oakland are the new coaching staff isn’t as enamored with Joseph as was the previous regime. He’s been playing behind Erik Harris in the preseason. That’s enough for me to cut bait on the third year safety. – Walton Spurlin @WaltonSpurlin of PFF

Landon Collins, S NYG

Safety is the most over drafted and overvalued position in IDP. Collins’ value has been sky high. The Giants have assembled a more consistent defense. That, along with a good balanced offensive attack, points to a decrease in production for Collins. – Bill Latin @BillLatin

Khalil Mack, DE OAK

(Editor’s note: written before Mack’s move to Chicago.)

I always have a hard time picking a sell. So much goes into finding when it’s a good time to sell on a player. I went with Mack simply because he has the defensive end tag now and should have a new contract by the time the season gets going. I don’t need to warn owners that in other schemes he’d be a great outside linebacker and I don’t think their current coaching situation is at all set in stone. Maybe for another year, but after that, who knows? Mack is on the list of best defensive players in the entire league, so striking at times when the iron is hottest is how you get the best value. – Adam Tzikas @Adamtz, aka StickyZ

Sean Lee, WLB DAL

Lee’s name still carries value in fantasy IDP circles. Many experts have him as a top-ten linebacker going into the 2018 season. He surely has plenty in the tank and has the resume to warrant the respect. That said, his durability is becoming a question and there is a youth movement at linebacker in Dallas. He’s primed to be a great sell option for folks willing to take a risk on a 32-year-old linebacker who’s still typically in the tops of linebacker rankings. He’s a good one-to-two-year rental for dynasty teams needing quick help. – Kelly Smelser @PDWonderland

Khalil Mack, DE OAK

(Editor’s note: written before Mack’s move to Chicago.)

This has nothing to do with Mack or his abilities as a football player. He’s a generational talent with the ability to take over a game and single-handedly win weeks for IDP owners. But Mack’s baffling contract kerfuffle (seriously… what in the holy hell are the Raiders doing) reinforces a very real concern with the 27-year-old. There’s been growing talk that the Raiders could trade Mack, and if he’s shipped to a team that runs a 3-4 (like the New York Jets, who have been mentioned as a potential suitor) he’s going to lose positional eligibility as a defensive lineman…again. Getting value for Mack given his present situation is nigh impossible, but if a reasonable offer comes along or he caves and reports to the Raiders for a lame-duck season, you’d be foolish not to strongly consider moving on. I can’t believe I’m saying that – but here we are. – Gary Davenport @IDPSharks of Fantasy Sharks, RotoWorld & Football Diehards
