What’s Next for Day Three

Ken Kelly

This year’s NFL Draft has been nothing short of dramatic thus far and while most casual fans may have lost interest as we hit day three, we at DLF are just getting started. The draft’s final day is always full of intrigue and includes lots of hidden gems who could easily become tomorrow’s dynasty darlings. Let’s review the progress we’ve made in each of the skill positions and see who’s left on the board for the draft’s final day.

Quarterbacks
Drafted: Baker Mayfield (Browns), Sam Darnold (Jets), Josh Rosen (Cardinals), Lamar Jackson (Ravens), Josh Allen (Bills), Mason Rudolph (Steelers)

We saw the run on quarterbacks dry up on day two – only one quarterback was taken as we saw the Steelers draft the player they believe may be their signal caller of the future in Mason Rudolph. As we look ahead to day three, there are three quarterbacks who seem to be standing out above the rest and a few teams still looking for quality backups or possible future starters. Teams who stand out as possibilities to draft a quarterback include the Patriots, Dolphins, Bengals, Jaguars, Chargers, Broncos, Redskins, Giants and Saints.

Running Backs
Drafted: Saquon Barkley (Giants), Derrius Guice (Redskins), Ronald Jones (Bucs), Sony Michel (Patriots), Rashaad Penny (Seahawks), Kerryon Johnson (Lions), Nick Chubb (Browns), Royce Freeman (Broncos)

The story of the draft from a dynasty perspective revolves solely around this position. We’ve been looking forward to this year’s running back depth for some time but also accepted the fact many of these players would end up in less than desirable spots. They didn’t. In fact, you can make a pretty easy case that each of the eight running backs taken in the draft’s first three rounds will open the season as their team’s new starter. From a dynasty perspective, that’s simply unheard of. We’ve been running this site for more than a decade and I can tell you this is truly unprecedented and very exciting. There will be great debate on how 2-8 should be ranked but we’ll have much, much more on that in the upcoming days and weeks. In the meantime, there are still some talented running backs on the board and teams like the Colts, Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Ravens, Steelers, Raiders, Eagles, Packers, Panthers and 49ers come to mind as teams who could be in the hunt for ball carriers.

Wide Receivers
Drafted: Calvin Ridley (Falcons), Courtland Sutton (Broncos), DJ Moore (Panthers), DJ Chark (Jaguars), Christian Kirk (Cardinals), Anthony Miller (Bears), James Washington (Steelers), Michael Gallup (Cowboys), Dante Pettis (49ers), Tre’Quan Smith (Saints)

The expected run on receivers happened in the middle of round two and we ended up seeing eight receivers taken in total on the draft’s second day. There are some very intriguing dynasty rookie picks in here, especially with players like Christian Kirk and Michael Gallup landing in great spots. That being said, there are still several good receivers who are surprisingly still on the board for day three. With receivers, it’s nearly impossible to determine which teams could be interested, though the Seahawks, Jets, Bills and Colts are likely to take a hard look at some of the players listed below.

Deon Cain, WR Clemson
Daesean Hamilton, WR Penn State
Equanimeous St. Brown, WR Notre Dame
Keke Coutee, WR Texas Tech
Antonio Callaway, WR Florida
Auden Tate, WR Florida State
J’Mon Moore, WR Missouri
Allen Lazard, WR Iowa State
Deontay Burnett, WR USC

Tight Ends
Drafted: Mike Gesecki (Dolphins), Hayden Hurst (Ravens), Dallas Goedert (Eagles), Mark Andrews (Ravens), Jordan Akins (Texans)

This draft was supposed to be known for running backs and tight ends but dynasty owners have to be a little frustrated about what happened with the tight end position thus far. The Ravens took Hayden Hurst then followed that up with Mark Andrews, hurting both their dynasty values in the process. Meanwhile, Dallas Goedert went to one of the worst destinations basically as a replacement for Trey Burton in Philadelphia. If you were in dire need of help at the tight ends position, only Mike Gesecki really escaped fully unscathed. There aren’t really too many great tight ends left on the board to help, either.  In fact, the only one who really catches my eye is Ian Thomas of Indiana.

We’ll break down the draft’s final day tomorrow night.
