2013 Free Agency Blog: Final Update

Ken Kelly

brandon_lloydFree agency is in swing and DLF is ready, as always.

This year, we’ll be covering all the free agency moves as they occur via this blog with our real time (or as close as we can get to it ) analysis of each move and how they impact our world of dynasty leagues. This Premium exclusive blog will be updated constantly as free agency unfolds over the next few days. In addition, we’re also running a special Premium exclusive IDP free agency blog for those of you in IDP leagues.  We’ll cover many of the mainstream offensive players in our free content, but this will be the place for complete free agency rundowns. Remember to read from the bottom as the most recent events will be listed at the top.

Here we go!

March 17,2013

GIANTS SIGN BRANDON MYERS

Former Raiders tight end Brandon Myers has signed on with the Giants, inking a one year deal. Myers had a breakout season last year with the silver and black as he posted 79 catches for 806 yards and four touchdowns. His signing really deflates the hope for Adrien Robinson to emerge this year for the Giants as Myers will undoubtedly be given every opportunity to start. Myers will make for an intriguing TE2 selection in start-up drafts as Eli Manning isn’t afraid to use his tight end in the passing game.

As for the Raiders, their top option at the moment looks like David Ausberry, so they’re likley in the market for a tight end here in the later stages of free agency or through the draft.

PATRIOTS CUT BRANDON LLOYD

Brandon Lloyd becomes the latest veteran free agent bust for the Patriots, though he did fare much better than Chad Ochocinco did. On the season, Lloyd caught 74 passes for 911 yards and four touchdowns – those aren’t awful numbers, but he simply never became the field stretching threat the Pats thought they were getting. New England has now lost Wes Welker and Lloyd this season and will most certainly be in the market for receivers even with the addition of Danny Amendola as indicated by their flirtation with Emmanuel Sanders.

As for Lloyd, he’ll now be looking for his seventh NFL team. Outside of his fantastic 2010 season, he’s been a disappointment in virtually every stop. When you add in his reportedly odd behavioral habits, it’s tough to see a team breaking the bank for him. It’s going to be interesting to see what he gets now that he can’t follow Josh McDaniels around.

VIKINGS FINALLY GET GREG JENNINGS

After nearly two days of courtship, the Vikings finally signed Greg Jennings to a five year, $47 million contract. The move ensures the Vikings have some type of legitimate (sorry Jerome Simpson) receiving threat and someone to take a little pressure off Adrian Peterson. More importantly, it gives Christian Ponder a playmaker he desperately needed after losing Percy Harvin to the Seahawks. Jennings will be a true WR1 in the Minnesota offense, but he’ll surely miss the arm of Aaron Rodgers throwing to him. All in all, it’s a decent move for the 29-year old Jennings. A WR1 in Minnesota should produce what a WR2 could in Green Bay. It would be reasonable to expect somewhere around 80 catches, 1,100 yards and a handful of scores for Jennings.

As for the Packers, this makes the Jermichael Finley situation a little more fun to watch. Will they use some of that money to retain him? You also have to wonder if they’re regretting offering Steven Jackson a little more money to come to Wisconsin. Regardless, this move opens up more opportunities for James Jones, Jordy Nelson, and, of course, Randall Cobb. Jarrett Boykin also become a bigger blip on the dynasty radar. As for Rodgers, he’ll get his numbers one way or another.

EAGLES TRADE FOR ARRELIOUS BENN

It’s really unfortunate to see a promising career get derailed by injuries, but such is the case for Arrelious Benn. Over the span of his career, he’s posted just 862 yards and five touchdowns in 37 career games. Benn will get a chance for fresh start with Chip Kelly, but he’s also buried on the depth chart. It’s hard to look at this move and say it’s positive for Benn, but realistically, the only place his value can go is up at this point.

DOLPHINS CONTINUE FREE AGENCY AGGRESSIVENESS WITH BRANDON GIBSON

Who do the Dolphins think they are? After getting Mike Wallace and Dustin Keller among others, they’ve now signed former Ram Brandon Gibson to a three year deal. The Jets went all in on Gibson and failed to sign him, as he chooses instead to go to Miami where he’ll be the fourth or fifth best receiving option. It really goes to show just how far the Jets have fallen.

The move is a little disappointing for Gibson as he’ll be bound to be lost in the shuffle a bit in Miami. Other places (like New York) would have been better for his value. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens with Davone Bess at this point. All these additions can’t be a good sign for him. Gibson is still on the dynasty radar, but really only as a flyer at this point.

JAGS ADD JUSTIN FORSETT

The Jaguars bolstered their running game by adding Justin Forsett to the mix. The former Seahawk and Texan provides some much needed depth to the Jags backfield and provides some veteran insurance behind the recovering Maurice Jones-Drew.  Forsett has always deserved better from the league as he’s been very productive when called upon. His size is an obvious issue, but he’s a player to keep an eye on in camp, especially if MJD has a setback of any kind.

CHARGERS ADD DANNY WOODHEAD

New England lost another contributor to their offense as Danny Woodhead signed with the Chargers. Woodhead will be used primariy as a third down specialist, but could be used in a variety of ways in the passing game.. He’s a multi-talented player who should provide some much needed creativity to the offense in San Diego. The return of Ronnie Brown dampens much of his value, but San Diego always seems to have a running back situation in flux. The Chargers are certianly preparing to use Ryan Mathews strictly on early downs.

Meanwhile, this is great news for Shane Vereen. The departure of Woodhead should really open up some time for him in the New England offense. Vereen came on strong late last year and is finally in position to take a big leap forward.

DOLPHINS SIGN DUSTIN KELLER

Miami kept their free agent frenzy going by signing Dustin Keller to a one year deal worth $4.25 million. That should bring a quick close to the Michael Egnew experiment or at the very least give him another season to learn the offense. For Keller, it’s a great move. He’s been stuck in dynasty purgatory with the Jets for far too long and should have a decent chance at posting some very solid numbers with Mike Wallace stretching the field.

Keller is stuck in the big tier of secondary tight ends, but he’ll be a candidate to really improve upon his 2012 numbers. As for Ryan Tannehill, he’s suddenly getting all the help he needs to have a huge jump in his Sophomore season.

CARDINALS RELEASE KEVIN KOLB

The Cardinals whiffed badly on Kevin Kolb and have now released the former Eagle, making their trade and subsequent$65 million contract only a bad memory. The signing of Drew Stanton and retention of Brian Hoyer left the Cardinals with the ability to dump Kolb after the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement on a restructured deal.

Kolb badly needed a fresh start and he should land on his feet relatively quickly. It’s hard to see a team giving him a starting job, but he’s been linked to the New York Jets where he would compete with Mark Sanchez and David Garrard in a quarterback derby only those with strong stomachs could endure. Kolb is roster filler at this point and should only be on teams with really deep squads.

PATS SIGN DONALD JONES

Here’s an under the radar signing I’m not excited for.

In his three years in Buffalo, Jones was only able to muster 82 catches for 887 yards and six touchdowns. While the quarterback play wasn’t spectacular, Jones also did little to show he was much more than just another receiver.  With that being said, he’s still only 25 years old and much of his career has been derailed by various injuries. The future of Brandon Lloyd is anything but settled as well. Anyone playing with Tom Brady has value, but he’s not a player I’m exactly targeting at the moment.

JETS SIGN MIKE GOODSON

Now here’s an under the radar signing I am excited for.

Goodson has never really been given much of a chance during his stints with Carolina and Oakland as he’s typically found himself buried on the depth chart. The same won’t be said for the talent deficient Jets. He’ll battle Bilal Powell for a significant role in the Jets offense. For his career, Powell has 160 carries for 722 yards and three touchdowns, good for 4.5 yards per attempt. He’s also a pretty good pass catcher, as he’s posted 59 catches for 524 yards and one more score.

The versatility that Goodson brings to the table could be a big coup for the Jets. It’s possible he just gets buried again at the beginning of the season (especially if the Jets bring in a rookie), but he could be a really good sleeper stash at the moment.

March 14, 2013

PATS SIGN LEON WASHINGTON

If the Seahawks and Patriots meet in the Super Bowl, there’s no way Seattle kicks to him. All kidding aside, Washington has value only in return yardage leagues and minimal value at that.

BUCS ADD KEVIN OGLETREE

Remember him? Yep, it’s that Kevin Ogletree who was suddenly the waiver wire pickup of the century in some people’s eyes last year after his amazing week one. Us, not so much.

Ogletree will compete for the third receiver job behind Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams. He won’t have any value at this point, but his signing may be bad news for former sleeper Arrelious Benn.

FALCONS REPLACE TURNER WITH A WORKHORSE

The Falcons may have just added the last piece of the puzzle to create a truly dynamic and complete offense as they agreed to terms with running back Steven Jackson on a three-year deal worth $12 million. Jackson turned down $7 million this season alone to play for the Rams, but did so in order to join a contending team in hopes of playing in the Super Bowl. He should have at least a puncher’s chance of doing that as he joins a Falcons team that features Roddy White, Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez and Matt Ryan on offense.

For Jackson, this is truly a best case scenario.

A washed up Michael Turner was the RB16 in many leagues last year and had 51 carries in the red zone alone (almost twice as many as Jackson) while averaging a less than stellar 3.6 yards per carry, his career low. Jackson averaged over four yards per carry with a putrid offense line, while posting his eighth straight 1,000 yard season. Jackson is a true three down workhorse and he should have his best season in years, especially in the touchdown department. For contending teams, he’s the perfect player to target right now.

This signing puts a bit of a pin in the balloon of Jacquizz Rodgers. He’ll be more of a change of pace option than a “lightning” complement to Jackson’s thunder. It’s obvious the Falcons don’t feel he can carry much of a load, but they’ll likely find some creative ways to get him involved.

Meanwhile, the Packers are still in the market for a running back.

VIKINGS SIGN MATT CASSEL

The Chiefs released quarterback Matt Cassel and the Vikings were quick to pounce him this afternoon, signing him to a multi-year deal. Cassel was great in 2010, but has regressed to a point where he was simply awful last year when he threw for just 1,796 yards, six touchdowns and 12 interceptions in nine games. Cassel is best served as a backup player and will be just that (at least initially) for the Vikings. He belongs on the waiver wire in dynasty leagues, but is at least ahead of Joe Webb on the depth chart behind Christian Ponder.

March 13, 2013

PATS WORK FAST TO REPLACE WELKER

Just a few hours after losing Wes Welker to their AFC rivals (which reminds me of Deion Sanders going from San Francisco to Dallas in 1995) , the Patriots signed former Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola to a five-year, $31 million contract. The deal includes $10 million in guarantees, so the Pats basically decided the difference between Welker and Amendola wasn’t worth $2 million. The Pats wisely don’t show any allegiance to players and the performance of Amendola and Welker will now be tied together for years to come.

For Amendola, this is a great spot. No, I take that back. This is an ideal spot. If he can stay healthy (he’s only played in 12 games the past two seasons), he could put up some monster PPR numbers in New England. His career high for receptions (85) came back in 2010 and it would be surprising to see him not surpass that next year if he’s used as a full-time slot receiver as Welker was. There are rumblings New England may be bringing back Julian Edelman to rotate with Amendola, but the Pats didn’t shell out $31 million to have Amendola on the sidelines much. Amendola’s health is the biggest question here, not his talent.

One thing is for sure now – we’ll soon find out just how much of a system player Wes Welker really was.

CARDINALS SIGN DREW STANTON

Interesting.

As it stands, Drew Stanton may actually be the best option for the Cardinals at quarterback. He has the arm necessary to run the offense of Bruce Arians and learned the offense under him in Indianapolis last year. It’s possible Arians saw enough of Stanton to have him be the placeholder at quarterback while a draft pick is groomed for a year. Much will play out in the next few months, but Stanton is at least on the radar again. It’s rumored he was promised a shot at the starting job and he actually may be the favorite, as sad as that may seem.

BRONCOS LAND A FREE AGENT PRIZE TWO YEARS STRAIGHT

The Broncos signed Wes Welker to a two-year, $12 million contract today after the Patriots reportedly only offered him $10 million over two years and didn’t want to match his offer from Denver. Welker is a serious upgrade over Brandon Stokley for the Broncos and Peyton Manning has to be salivating at the prospect of having Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker lining up in his three wide receiver sets.

Welker will have a really hard time catching 100 passes, but he should get his fair share of targets in this high octane offense. His days of being one of the top five PPR receivers are likely over, but he’ll be productive nonetheless. In the short term, this could throw some cold water on Decker’s short-term value (I think Thomas gets his targets no matter what), but remember this is the last year of Decker’s deal in Denver and it’s hard to see the Broncos being able to keep all three of those receivers beyond this season – don’t have a knee jerk reaction and sell Decker on the cheap in a dynasty league.

TITANS LAND SHONN GREENE

Tennessee nabbed former Jets starter Shonn Greene to be their backup and short yardage running back today after inking him to a three-year, $10 million contract. The days of Greene being a starter are now officially over as he’ll have virtually no chance to unseat Chris Johnson. Greene will likely be the goal line back and short yardage back for Tennessee and serve as a change of pace for Johnson. This news isn’t great for CJ2K owners as his touchdown total could go down, but don’t go overboard –  a lot of Johnson’s scores come from well beyond the goal line. While Greene will take a few scores away, he’s no real serious threat to Johnson’s overall value.

CARDINALS SIGN RASHARD MENDENHALL

In 2009 and 2010, Rashard Mendenhall rushed for nearly 3,400 yards and 20 touchdowns as the bellcow for the Steelers. Unfortunately for him, a torn ACL derailed his time in Pittsburgh. He appeared in only six games for the Steelers last year, rushing for just 182 yards on 3.6 yards per carry. He was even suspended for a game a week last year after not even showing up for a game the Steelers were slated to play against San Diego.

In Arizona, Mendy gets a new lease on life. He’s on a one year “prove it” deal, but finds himself reunited with his former offensive coordinator in Bruce Arians. The real story here revolves around Ryan Williams and his value as this casts some serious doubt on his short term future. It’s quite possible we now have a serious camp battle to watch between Mendenhall and Williams as Arians has been quoted several times in saying he prefers a true bellcow as opposed to a committee attack at the position.

REGGIE BUSH IS A LION

Other than Mike Wallace to Miami, this was the worst kept secret in all of free agency. What is surprising is the Lions giving Reggie Bush a promise to be their three-down featured back. Bush has resurrected his career since his move from New Orleans and it looks like he’ll be called upon to be the missing piece in a Detriot offense that really needed an explosive player in the backfield ever since they lost Jahvid Best to head injuries.

For Bush, this is really the best case scenario for him. While he’s always going to be an injury risk, he should have a chance to put up some very impressive numbers, especially in PPR leagues. With defenses keying on Calvin Johnson, Bush should be relied upon in the screen and intermediate passing game. If he can run up the middle like he has the past couple of seasons, he could have a really solid season in Detriot and match or exceed the numbers he put up as a Dolphin the past couple of seasons.

This signing is obvious bad news for Mikel Leshoure and his owners. If Bush is truly given featured back duties, Leshoure’s value has just gone in the tank. Leshoure was solid last year with 798 yards and nine touchdowns, but lacked the dynamic ability and explosiveness to truly bring the Lions offense to the next level. Joique Bell is really going to see his role slashed as well and that’s disappointing for his dynasty owners.

If you believe Bush will get hurt or fail in this endeavor, now could be the time to get Leshoure on the cheap from a frustrated owner. If you own Leshoure, you likely just need to hold tight and hope for the best down the road since his trade value just hit an all-time low.

CHIEFS SIGN DONNIE AVERY

Donnie Avery was our Colts sleeper last year and he fared pretty well with 60 receptions for 781 yards and three touchdowns as the starter alongside Reggie Wayne. This signing clears the way for TY Hilton to take over as a starter for the Colts and certainly improves his value as he’ll grow even more as a primary weapon for Andrew Luck.

As for Avery, it’s unclear right now how he’ll fit in with the Chiefs. If Kansas City retains all their receivers, they suddenly have a bit of a logjam at the position, but there’s still much in the air on that front. Some media outlets belive Jonathan Baldwin may be on the block, but that seems to be more dot connecting or guessing than anything else. Time will tell on that front.

BEARS RELEASE KELLEN DAVIS

Chicago has done the expected and released Kellen Davis. After signing Martellus Bennett, there really was no need to keep Davis around. He was a total bust last year and the Bears hope Bennett can fulfill the promise of being a secondary option to Brandon Marshall. Davis will likely get another job out there, but his value is in the tank after being a popular sleeper last year.

RAIDERS RELEASE DARRIUS HEYWARD-BEY

The Raiders have let go of Darrius Heyward-Bey after four underwhelming seasons in the silver and black. His cap number proved to be too problematic for the Raiders to swallow now that they’re actually being run like a professional football team. His departure opens up more opportunities for Denarius Moore and Rod Streater to develop – this also could be the break Juron Criner needed to carve out a role. Don’t forget about Jacoby Ford, who is coming back from a lisfranc injury as well.

EAGLES SNAG JAMES CASEY FROM THE TEXANS

The Eagles have signed “joker” tight end James Casey away from the Houston Texans. Casey had a pretty solid season last year with 34 catches for 330 yards and three touchdowns. Casey is intriguing as he should be used as a full-time tight end in Philadelphia. Chip Kelly nows how to be creative and he could really like what he says from Casey since he’s a natural pass catcher. I don’t believe Casey is in line for a huge bump statistically just yet, but he’s a player to monitor through camp nonetheless.

March 12, 2013

RAMS SIGN JARED COOK

The Rams made a big free agent splash by signing Jared Cook to a five-year contract today. There’s no doubting Cook’s athleticism and the Rams will finally give him a chance to consistently showcase his talent. Sam Bradford may not be an elite quarterback, but he’s more accurate than Jake Locker and Cook adds a new dimension to the offense. The signing may take the Rams out of the Danny Amendola sweepstakes, but that remains to be seen.

Cook remains a TE2, but he does offer some pretty serious upside. With the group of second tier tight ends so large, he’s one to target on potential alone – he’ll be given every opportunity to be successful in St. Louis.

CHASE DANIEL SIGNS WITH THE CHIEFS

This signing flew under the radar on a variety of media outlets, but not with us. Chase Daniel could quite possibly be viewed as the heir apparent to Alex Smith for the Chiefs. They gave him $9 million over three years and that seems to be more than just clipboard holding money. Smith has had a tendency to be up and down, though Daniel poses no threat to his starting job any time soon. Pay close attention to how Daniel plays in the preseason as he could be a deep roster stash for owners with some patience.

DELANIE WALKER LANDS WITH THE TITANS

Now this is interesting. Walker is a great blocker and all around player, but the Titans already have young Taylor Thompson waiting in the wings as well. At first blush, Thompson looks to be the primary pass catching option with Walker being a swiss army knife of sorts. Both players belong on deep dynasty rosters and the preseason should go a long way in seeing just how each of these players will be used. This signing also ensured the departure of Jared Cook.

BILLS RELEASE RYAN FITZPATRICK

Well, it didn’t take long for Fitzpatrick to be released after word surfaced the brass of Buffalo viewed him as a second string player. The Bills desire to upgrade the quarterback position is the worst kept secret since the secret was invented. They’ll be scouring the wire and looking to the draft in an attempt to upgrade the position. As for Fitzpatrick, it’s unlikely he lands a starting job anywhere, though he could be an immediate upgrade for a desperate team like Arizona.

CHIEFS SIGN ANTHONY FASANO

Fasano has been average his entire career, but surprisingly received $4.5 million in signing bonus money from the Chiefs today. He’ll likely slide in right behind Tony Moeaki, but could have some short-term value should Moeaki go down (that’s not exactly impossible).

BEARS SIGN MARTELLUS BENNETT

The Giants lost a key player today and it wasn’t Victor Cruz as tight end Martellus Bennett became the first “official signing” of the day, as he inked a deal with the Bears. His deal throws the last bit of cold water on the value of Kellen Davis in Chicago as he’ll likely be moving on. Bennett had a breakout season last year with 55 catches, 626 yards and five touchdowns after finally getting out from behind the shadow of Jason Witten in Dallas.

Chicago isn’t the best place for Bennett, but he should be able to post some fairly solid numbers and could potentially take some coverage away from Brandon Marshall.

As for the Giants, this could be an opportunity for young Adrien Robinson to step up into a big role. If the Giants fail to address the position via free agency or the draft, Robinson makes for a solid sleeper in dynasty leagues.

SEATTLE RELEASES LEON WASHINGTON

Regardless of where he ends up, Leon Washington won’t have any value outside of return yardage leagues, and limited value even in those. The true ramification here is in regards to Percy Harvin, as this move seems to indicate Harvin will indeed be used on kick returns.  In a related story, Harvin signed his contract extension today with Seattle and will be under the team’s control during the prime of his career.

HOLMES RESTRUCTURES HIS DEAL

Santonio Holmes reached an agreement with the Jets today to restructure his deal. Holmes is coming off another lost season in New York and has a long way to go in order to reach status worthy of a WR2 again. With the Jets quarterback situation, there’s no guarantee he’ll be able to that even if he can get healthy.

TEXANS RELEASE KEVIN WALTER

Kevin Walter hasn’t had any dynasty value in quite some time as his production has been spotty at best during his time in Houston. The real news here is the move could open up serious playing time for Keshawn Martin and/or last year’s preseason darling, Lestar Jean. The Texans are now a team to watch over the coming days and weeks.

VIKINGS RE-SIGN JEROME SIMPSON

A day after trading Percy Harvin to the Seahawks, the Vikings scrambled and re-signed Jerome Simpson. Most were shocked by the signing as Simpson was a major bust after signing with Minnesota last year. For the season, Simpson caught just 26 passes for 274 yards. If this is the free agency ace in the hole for the Vikings and their wide receiver corps, you can bet Minnesota will be looking for a receiver with one of their two first round draft picks.

DOLPHINS LAND BIG FISH

Mike Wallace did the expected today and signed a five-year deal with the Dolphins worth $65 million including $30M guaranteed.  This is unquestionably the biggest move in free agency for Dolphins since they traded for Brandon Marshall and signed Karlos Dansby three years ago.

Over his four year career in Pittsburgh, the elite speedster posted 235 catches for 4,042 yards and 32 touchdowns, averaging 17.2 yards per catch. Wallace brings the deep threat and legitimate receiving weapon Ryan Tannehill has desperately needed and should fit in well with Davone Bess and Brian Hartline, who have much different skill sets.

Wallace remains best served as a WR2 with upside since he’s bound to be somewhat inconsistent, but his numbers shouldn’t suffer too much since he’ll be a focal point of the offense. Tannehill should now have every opportunity to be successful, especially if Lamar Miller pans out.

As for the Steelers, this paves the way for Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders to have even more targets down the road. It’s going to be interesting to see if Pittsburgh adds to the receiving corps in the next few days or through the draft.

TONY GONZALEZ COMING BACK

While not official quite yet, the tea leaves have spoken and it looks like Tony Gonzalez is coming back for one more season with Atlanta. In the end, the quest for a Super Bowl ring while playing for a true contender has proven to be too much for Gonzalez to pass up. At this point, it’s safe to expect Gonzalez signing a relatively cap friendly deal that doesn’t impede the Falcons pursuit of other free agents like Steven Jackson.

For dynasty owners who held on to him (or those who own Matt Ryan), this is obviously great news. Gonzalez was a beast last year and while his numbers will surely take a bit of a dip this year, he still provides TE1 value each and every week. If you’re a contender, you just ride it out and hope for the best. If you’re not, it looks like you have one more window that’s opened up for you to deal him and get some value before he retires for good at the end of the 2013 season.

PRIOR TO FREE AGENCY BEGINNING

March 11, 2013

JETS SIGN DAVID GARRARD

The Jets signed free agent quarterback David Garrard to a deal today. This is certainly not the big splash Jets fans were hoping for, but Garrard will at least provide some legitimate competition for Mark Sanchez this Summer. Garrard is a bit underrated and has been fairly effective when called upon, but he also comes with injury concerns. For his career, Garrard has thrown for just North of 16,000 yards with 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions, all with the Jaguars.

Remember, Garrard was slated to be the starting quarterback in Miami last year until a knee injury ultimately derailed his chance. While he’s nowhere near dynamic, he looks like an upgrade to on paper. This move just makes the writing on the wall a little more clear – the leash on Sanchez is very short.

Unfortunately, the Jets have become a dynasty wasteland and it’s going to take years to dig out of this mess.
