Instant Analysis: Vince Young agrees with Eagles
With most free agent signings, the effect is felt around the league and changes dynasty player values from one team to another. Vince Young has decided to sign a one year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, but this signing is all about one person and one person only – Vince himself. Â Let’s take a look in the latest installment of in the “Instant Analysis” series.
Young was drafted by Tennessee in the first round of the 2006 draft after leading the University of Texas to a National Championship victory over USC. Â Ironically enough, his title game foe Reggie Bush found a new home on the same day. During his tenure as a Titan, he racked up 8,098 yards, 42 touchdowns and 42 interceptions. When you add his 1,380 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns along with a 30-17 record as a starter, you get an effective player.
That’s only half the story.
Vince’s tenure as a Titan was an absolute roller coaster. Young proved to be fragile mentally and broke down when the fans starting challenging his effort and stranglehold as the pillar of the franchise just a few short years ago. When faced with this adversity, he disappeared. Literally. We all know what happened next and the speculation that followed.
Young returned to the helm of the Titans last season, but lasted only nine games before calling out his Head Coach Jeff Fisher and walking out on his team following a loss to the Washington Redskins. Â That would prove to be his last mistake in a Tennessee Titans uniform. He was banished from the team and finally released this week.
There were several teams reportedly interested in him, but the Eagles are a nice fit. Miami may have been the best chance he had to become a starter, but spending a year in Philadelphia is probably the best thing for him. Â Miami is rebuilding and Young wouldn’t have much of a chance to win in a division featuring the Patriots and Jets.
Give credit to Andy Reid and the Eagles for talking him into swallowing his pride and accepting a backup position to Michael Vick. While it may be tough to imagine, Young’s value around the league and in dynasty circles will get a boost if he can just make it through the year without being a distraction. Michael Vick is also no sure thing to be healthy all season. If he goes down, Young is more than capable of running an offense as talented as any in the league.
Young should be rostered in deep dynasty leagues as a talented reclamation project who has a chance to re-emerge with a Vick injury or via a new home next season.
You have to give credit to the Eagles. They started the morning with Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb as their quarterbacks. They end the day with Vick, Vince Young, a former Pro Bowl cornerback in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round draft pick.
Not bad.
