Dynasty Twitter Observations: Breece Hall Hype, John Metchie’s Return

Michael Moore

We don’t have games yet but we have plenty of other action, and tweets, to comb through when it comes to our dynasty teams. Below are a few of the bigger developments this week.

Hall Pass

Breece Hall dynasty managers have had a roller coaster of emotions during his brief NFL career – from being the top selection in most rookie drafts in 2022 to a middling start to his career to his breakout that saw him total nearly 400 yards in just four games to then tearing his ACL. Heading into this season, the hype was gaining steam again based on those final games before the injury. Yet, as the tweet mentions above, several red flags should make you think twice before valuing Hall as a top-five running back.

Dynasty Impact: Except for Bijan Robinson, no current player has had their value balloon so high based on so little sample size. Yes, Hall played roughly half of this rookie season but didn’t break out until a month into it. He looked like an RB1 but then missed the final 10 games. Yet, his dynasty ranking has only gotten higher.

And while Dalvin Cook may ultimately not sign in New York, the fact that the Jets even brought him in should prove that Hall isn’t ready to be the workhorse, whether it’s for health or other reasons. We currently have Hall as the second-ranked running back. If you’re a current manager and someone wants to pay you the equivalent of what a second-ranked running back would cost for Hall, I’d do it.

Texan Mark

Texans receiver John Metchie already has the inside track on the feel-good story of the 2023 season. Drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Metchie came from the new Wide Receiver University in Alabama, sharing the receiver room over the years with DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Jerry Jeudy, and Jameson Williams. Yet he still turned in a 1,000-yard season and probably would have been drafted higher if not for tearing his ACL before his college career was over.

Of course, then Metchie was diagnosed with Leukemia as well which knocked him out of the 2022 season completely. But he beat it and recovered enough to the point that he appears ready to go. So where does that leave his dynasty value?

Dynasty Impact: At the moment, our DLF rankers have Metchie ranked as the 71st receiver. For context, 2023 rookie receivers such as Cedric Tillman and Jayden Reed are ranked just ahead of him. On the surface, it seems like Metchie is a value. He has more draft capital than either Tillman or Reed and he was selected after the Texans traded up to get him. He now resides on a revamped offense with rookie CJ Stroud under center and very little competition in the receiver room. There are veterans Robert Woods and Nico Collins, neither of which should scare anyone and 2023 third-rounder Tank Dell who, while a Stroud favorite, is very small for a potential target hog. For Metchie, his value has been steady this off-season but will get higher if he starts impressing in the preseason.

If you already are a Metchie manager, he’s a great lottery ticket this season. And if you’re not a current Metchie manager, you might want to be. Using the DLF Trade Finder, deals that involve Metchie are all over the place from being swapped for a future third-round rookie pick to DeAndre Hopkins straight up. It never hurts to ask.

Fried Rice

Another week, another Chiefs receiver is being talked up. It’s to be determined if Kansas City is just bubbling with fantasy potential at the position or if it’s all a by-product of having the greatest quarterback ever but this week’s breakout candidate/beneficiary is 2023 rookie Rashee Rice. The tweet above showed the talent that prompted the Chiefs to not just take Rice 55th overall but trade up to do so. He’s been the only real addition to the receiving corps after JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman left via free agency which means there is real opportunity to see early targets – if he can gain the trust of Mahomes and the coaching staff.

Dynasty Impact: Thanks to four receivers being taken in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Rice’s potential rookie draft landing spots were pushed to the second round. That’s later than last year’s Chiefs rookie receiver, Skyy Moore, who was taken in the latter end of the first round of rookie drafts. Moore didn’t exactly work out as dynasty managers had hoped, totaling just 22 receptions for 250 yards and not scoring his first touchdown until the last game of the 2023 season in the Super Bowl. And while the arrow is pointing up for Moore this year, dynasty managers might still be apprehensive to take another Chiefs receiver that early. So far, Rice is predominantly taken in the early second round of rookie drafts but is lasting, in some, until the third round.

If you have yet to have your rookie draft, it might be worth it to take Rice at the end of the first. He’s joined by several other second-round receivers and it’s hard to see the separation. But instead of waiting and hoping, taking him ensures you have a share of the very explosive Chiefs offense at a relatively low cost, especially if he sees time early. Every rookie draft pick is a dart throw but Rice could be one of the safer ones.
