20/20 Interview with Daniel Simpkins

Amy Garcia

This week, DLF IDP contributor and Footballguys analyst, Daniel Simpkins, spent a few minutes with us so you could get to know him a bit more. Enjoy!

Where are you from?

I have lived most of my life in the Middle Tennessee area.

What do you do for your regular job?

I am a mental health therapist by day.

What is the worst job you have ever had?

Working for Walmart. It was my first job. I lasted less than a month.

What is the best job you have ever had?

I really enjoy what I do now!

What do you consider your dream job?

I would love to work in the fantasy industry full-time.

How long have you been in the industry?

Over six years. I started with UTH and am now currently employed by both DLF and Footballguys. I have played fantasy for 27 years.

How did you get your break into fantasy football?

I was willing to cover IDP and Dynasty, which many outlets considered niche or specialty content. Gaining expertise in areas other people are unwilling to deal with set one up pretty well to excel.

What tool do you use the most on DLF?

The trade analyzer.

What tool do you use the most outside of DLF?

Footballguys’ snap counts data comes in handy when looking at IDP playing time per game.

Who was the best sleeper you pegged that broke out?

It’s a tie between George Kittle and Dak Prescott.

Who was your biggest whiff?

This is a tie between Kevin White and Cody Latimer.

What is the worst trade you have made?

Before his breakout happened, but DeAndre Hopkins and a 2nd for the pick that became Corey Davis. Ouch, that hurt to type.

Who is your favorite underfollowed Twitter account?

Probably @UtahEC. Very smart, very informed IDP analyst who I worked with at UTH and now here at DLF. How he doesn’t have more followers is beyond me.

Who is your favorite NFL team?

The Tennessee Titans. Yes, I must enjoy torture.

Who is your favorite college football team?

I used to be a Tennessee Volunteers fan, but since their advertising partnership with Barstool Sports, I have chosen not to cheer for them.

Who was your favorite player growing up?

Zach Thomas. I was a Dolphins fan before the Titans came to town.

Who is your favorite player of all time?

I’m going to interpret this as being open to sports other than football. Pekka Rinne, the Nashville Predators goaltender, is my favorite player of all time. A great goalie, but an even more incredible human being.

What other hobbies or passions do you have outside of fantasy football?

I’m passionate about mental health and helping others become the best versions of themselves.

What are some of your favorite movies?

I have so many… but The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, Man on Fire, 12 Angry Men, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are among my favorites.

Who are some of your favorite bands?

My musical tastes are pretty eclectic. Oceanlab, ATB, Boston, Chicago, Arcade Fire, The National, The Postal Service, The Police, People in Planes, Pentatonix, King’s Singers, Imogen Heap… just to name a few.
