Devy Stock Market

Nathan Powell

The fantasy football stock market is constantly fluctuating and it is always important for us to know which players have a price that has in both redraft and dynasty, but I will be focusing on college players for devy dynasty leagues and how their week-to-week performances are affecting their price in those leagues.

Bowden Continues To Bring It – Lynn Bowden, QB Kentucky

I have considered putting Bowden on this list a few times this season, but he never felt worth it as most of the time when you have a wide receiver playing quarterback and putting up big rushing numbers, that’s usually just an example of a good college player, but not a legitimate NFL prospect. However, Bowden may be the exception to that archetype with how well he has played this season.

Bowden took over the starting quarterback job for Kentucky on October 12th. He has gone over 98 rushing yards in each of his seven games, averaging 162 rushing yards per game, capped off by a 284-yard rushing performance last week against Louisville. Bowden is not an NFL passer, with only 62 attempts in those seven games with an AY/A of 4.5. However, he could find himself in a similar role to Randall Cobb or Julian Edelman.

Bowden’s stock as a prospect is not going to get much higher than it is right now, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see him leave for the NFL, and if he does, he could be a high pick in rookie drafts in devy leagues.

Going for Gray – Eric Gray, RB Tennessee

Eric Gray was a relative unknown in college football prior to last week. He was a four-star prospect via Rivals, but had only gotten more than ten carries once this before his breakout performance against Vanderbilt. With 207 rushing yards coming into the game, Gray surpassed his season total in one game with 246, averaging 9.8 yards per carry on the game with three trips to the end zone.

This breakout performance will put Gray on the devy map, but a big performance in Tennessee’s bowl game could turn him from one-game wonder who you invest a late pick in, to one of my favorite devy picks from his draft class.

Small School Shopping – Jalen Tolbert, WR South Alabama

If you plan on shopping the small school market this devy off-season, Jalen Tolbert has shown this season why he should be among your considerations. The 6’3” wide receiver has quietly been a great deep threat with 24 yards per catch or higher in four of his last seven games.Tolbert is averaging 19.3 yards per catch on the season and had his best game of the season last week against Arkansas State with five catches for 144 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.

He is likely only a consideration in the deepest of devy leagues, but he has the size and big-play ability to be worth a late-round pick in devy leagues.

Patterson is Pumped – Jaret Patterson, RB Buffalo

We continue to stay out of the power five with one of the most impressive players in college football in recent weeks. Jaret Patterson has five straight weeks of 141 rushing yards or more, averaging 188 rushing yards per game over that span. Last week, he ran for 298 rushing yards and six touchdowns against Bowling Green with 11.5 yards per carry.

Patterson has 2,604 rushing yards with 31 rushing touchdowns in his first two collegiate seasons. He doesn’t even need the tag of “if you’re looking for a non-power five player” – he should be a devy consideration in all leagues this off-season.

Players to watch in the Conference Championship games

Pac-12 Championship: Utah vs Oregon – Justin Herbert, QB Oregon

Many have questioned Herbert’s ability to play against greater opponents, particularly after 6.5 yards per attempt against his best opponent of the season in the opener against Auburn. Herbert has followed that up with an excellent senior season with 9.3 AY/A for the season, but Utah will be a good test against the “Herbert doesn’t play well against good competition” narrative.

Big 10 Championship: Ohio State vs Wisconsin – Quintez Cephus, WR Wisconsin

Looking outside the box of the Wisconsin running backs and the Ohio State well… everything, Quintez Cephus is an interesting player to watch in this game. Cephus is coming off his second 100-yard performance of the season, and he has eclipsed 20 yards per catch in each of those games.

Big 12 Championship: Baylor vs Oklahoma – Charleston Rambo, WR Oklahoma

In 2018, with Marquise Brown in his final season, we saw the imminent breakout of CeeDee Lamb coming, which has happened and then some in 2019. Early in the season, we thought we were seeing more of the same with Charleston Rambo having 100 or more receiving yards in three of the first four games this season. However, Rambo hasn’t had more than 73 receiving yards since September. For Rambo to be a legitimate devy consideration this off-season, we need to see more of what we saw at the beginning of the season during the postseason.

SEC Championship: Georgia vs LSU – Dominic Blaylock, WR Georgia

The LSU wide receivers and Georgia running backs have been two of the best groups in college football this season, so many devy players will be focused on them, but for me, Dominic Blaylock is a player to watch. Georgia’s two leading receivers may miss the game with suspension and injury, which puts the four-star freshman in a position where he could be relied on in this game. Blaylock leads the wide receiver group in yards per catch with 17.6 yards per catch and is second on the team with five receiving touchdowns.

ACC Championship: Clemson vs Virginia – Justyn Ross, WR Clemson

Justyn Ross has had a disappointing sophomore season, not matching his freshman production with his yards per game dropping 12 yards to 59 and his yards per catch dropping 8.8 yards to 12.5. Ross will need a big postseason in order to regain the value that he has lost this season.
