The DLF Mailbag

Matt Price

Welcome back to the DLF Mailbag! Let’s get to your questions.

1. What are your thoughts on Chris Godwin? What’s his floor/ceiling this year? He’s available in several leagues I’m in and I just have a hard time figuring him out. Thanks!

Mike,

Firstly, Mike my man. You gotta add some teams to your seven-man league! At least get to 10 and preferably to 12. In a seven-team league, I don’t think Godwin is any higher than a WR4 for 2018. Under your settings, a maximum of 21 wide receivers are being started in your league each week. It’s unlikely he will be anything other than a bye week or injury replacement player since he isn’t a top-21 wide receiver. Just in case it was a typo and for the sake of owners in leagues with more common settings, I’ll look at this from the viewpoint of an owner in a 12-team league.

From a dynasty perspective, I currently have Godwin ranked 33rd – second highest among our positional rankers. Godwin showed off his abilities as a rookie in weeks 16 and 17 with three for 98 and seven for 111 with a touchdown to close out the 2017 season. The coaching staff has said he deserves to be a starter and momentum is building for him to not only start in three wide receiver sets but to be playing across from Mike Evans and ahead of DeSean Jackson. If that’s the case, then I think Godwin’s floor is a mid-low fantasy WR3. If catastrophe strikes and Mike Evans is injured, Godwin has a real chance at a WR2 kind of ceiling.

Long term, I do believe Godwin is the answer for the Bucs as the second receiver. DeSean Jackson won’t be there in 2020 and Godwin is a much better player than Adam Humphries. I think you could even argue he is a more complete wide receiver than Mike Evans, whose yards after the catch (YAC) numbers leave much to be desired. Evans had just 132 yards after the catch on 71 receptions in 2017. That’s just 1.86 YAC per reception. To put it another way, Evans was tied with Jordan Matthews for 154th most YAC in the NFL last season and Matthews gained that much on 46 fewer receptions.

The 2019 wide receiver class is stacked and I guess it’s possible the Buccaneers spend an early pick at the position, but with both Evans and Godwin, I don’t think it’s very likely.

2. I currently have Zach Ertz and might be trading for Kyle Rudolph soon. For a third TE who is your top choice in Dynasty 1pt PPR – George Kittle, Trey Burton or Mike Gesicki? Thanks!

Matt,

Another small league! To be perfectly honest, unless your rosters are just gigantic I don’t think you need to carry a third tight end in an eight-team league, especially if your TE1 is Zach Ertz. I will say though that I like Trey Burton better than Kyle Rudolph so if the scenario plays out like you are laying it out, I’d take Burton as my TE2 and Rudolph as my TE3.

Maybe you feel differently though. If that’s the case, Burton is your choice at TE3, followed by Mike Gesicki and George Kittle.

Personally, because of your league settings, I’d just roll with Ertz and the cheapest of the other four options you mentioned. You have a top-four tight end as your starter so use that extra roster spot on a running back or wide receiver. This is a small league that only requires starting one tight end with no bonuses for the position so I wouldn’t use a valuable roster spot on a third one.

That will do it for this week. If you would like your question answered in-depth then shoot a message into the DLF mailbag.
